Lafayette/Lehigh games at PPL Center

I wonder if there have been any talks to move occasional Lafayette/Lehigh men's basketball games to the PPL Center in Allentown.  I don't think this would (or should) be an every year thing, but it's something that might be pretty cool when both teams are good/projected to be good and there are no schedule conflicts.  Maybe such a game could be made part of a basketball doubleheader, perhaps with a Lafayette/Lehigh women's basketball game, a Moravian/Muhlenberg basketball game, a Lehigh Valley high school basketball game (probably featuring Allen, Dieruff, or Central Catholic), or something similar.

I realize most Lafayette/Lehigh basketball games don't sell out as is (at least at the larger Stabler Arena), but in the right context, I think the idea has merit.  I can't help but remember that 2004 Lafayette/Lehigh regular season game at Stabler that drew 5,206 (essentially a sellout and I'm pretty sure the all-time record for attendance at a Lehigh basketball game), probably had 1500-2000 Lafayette fans in attendance by my estimate, and had by far the best atmosphere of any basketball game I've attended at Lafayette or Lehigh (though Lafayette/Lehigh 2000 Patriot League Tournament semifinal at Kirby and the 2010 Patriot League Championship Game at Stabler were good atmosphere-wise too).

Thoughts?

Think you lose too many of the local Easton crowd for a game in Allentown.  Don't really see anything particularly special in it for LC.

Maybe I'm biased because I'm from the Lehigh Valley but not specifically from Easton, but I think of Lafayette as a Lehigh Valley school rather than an Easton school.  Many people throughout the Lehigh Valley pay attention to Lafayette sports, not just people in Easton, Phillipsburg, Wilson, Palmer Township, and the like.  The trip between Easton and Allentown isn't too hard, especially on a weekend.  (I envision any Lafayette/Lehigh basketball games that would be played at the PPL Center would be played on a weekend.)

If any Lafayette/Lehigh games were moved to the PPL Center, objectively-speaking I think a Lehigh home game should be moved first because 1) Lehigh is located closer to Allentown (even if Stabler Arena is larger than Kirby Sports Center, especially post-Kirby renovations) and 2) in football Lafayette doesn't appear to be getting a home game for L-L 151 despite the fact they gave up L-L 150 as a home game to move it to Yankee Stadium.

Paying attention does not equal going.....

Yes, we got horse-traded out of a home game on #150 - this would not make up for it, no way, no how.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER. Drexel is playing 3 games there this year. They play Pen State in one of those. $138 for sideline seating, play $10+ for parking. Go enjoy yourself.

I never said that moving a Lehigh home basketball game against Lafayette to the PPL Center would "make up" for L-L 151 not being a Lafayette home football game (I agree, it wouldn't); I said having Lehigh be the first school to move a home basketball game in the rivalry to the PPL Center would be more fair.

From what I've seen and heard, Drexel is only playing one game at the PPL Center in 2014-2015, and their game against Penn State on 12/20 is technically a Penn State home game.  I also don't think tickets have gone on sale yet for that game.  (They have gone on sale for a 76ers/Orlando pre-season game, and IMO the prices for that game are too high.  The on-court, front row seating for that game is $118, though all non-floor seats are less than $50.)

I do know that when I attended my near-annual Lehigh & Lafayette football doubleheader as part of a family visit back in late September, there was table set up at Goodman Stadium for information about Lehigh basketball.  I was at that table for no more than 1-2 minutes, but at least 2-3 people asked about tickets to the 11/14 Lehigh/Villanova game at the PPL Center while I was there.  (That game is technically a Villanova home game, and Lehigh's direct ticket allotment will be limited.  Tickets haven't gone on sale for that game yet either.)

Yes, only one game for Drexel in PPL, and Penn State is the "home" team.  I'm sure most sideline tickets will be far less than $100.

I find it curious that LU would agree to play at the place that is competing and stealing events from their airplane hangar.

Interesting point.  I don't live anywhere near the Valley, but I assume the PPL Center is getting all of the concerts and other events that used to go to Stabler.
Kpard

Correct. Just waiting to see how many HS graduations defect to PPL.
Kpard

Now that I think about it, perhaps all the LU athletic teams would rather play their games somewhere other than the hangar!  Rolling Eyes  Wink  Twisted Evil  Laughing

Well, they're stuck with Stabler but they just broke ground for a new baseball field with a turf infield. They are also construting a new softball complex across the street from Stabler.
Bogus Megapardus

I see no benefit to holding our L-L BBall home game at the new PPL facility.  If Lehigh wants to hold their BBall home game against us there, that's entirely up to them.
pardball80

Lehigh has an attendance and atmosphere problem along with the 13 mile walk to get into Stapler. We have a parking problem, not an attendance problem.
bethlehempard

The new center is an excellent facility.
I don't think Stabler draws many concerts and that may be related to the Sands in Bethlehem. I suspect the State Theatre is suffering based on their recent lineups.
Stabler has parking and access going for it. It's a much better place for graduations.
High school graduations are boring anyway and a lot of locals prefer to avoid downtown Allentown.
Kpard

And more importantly...... It's' probably cheaper.

What better place for a boring event than the Stabler Mausoleum.

The parking issue seems to be a universal issue. I don't understand... there is plenty of parking.  It's not next to the arena or stadium, but it's only an issue one day every two years, and if you are a regular, you know how to handle it.

I'd rather park on the Hill than in a garage or lot in Atown... the Hill is just nicer.
CHIP72

Maybe it's because I haven't (yet) been to a Lafayette/Lehigh football game at Fisher, but whenever I do go to a Lafayette football or basketball game on College Hill, I never have any problems.  I just park a few blocks away from Kirby & Fisher on one of the streets (McCartney or a street that allows me to turn onto McCartney) and then leave (and prior to the game, arrive) the back way back out to US 22 west via Lafayette Street.
bethlehempard

Basketball season-ticket offers aren't out yet. It's getting a little late.
Kpard

Sure they are. Check the. Website. Got mine on Monday.
Grandpa Tom

Very Happy Thanks for the ticket information.   Have not been able to get by to watch any practice, does anyone have any insight how we look?  GO PARDS!!!
