Lafayette Maroon

I was checking out the online store the other day, and noticed that we still can't seem to get a standard color Maroon in place.  Much of the gear is more crimson or cardinal than anything, and some is that darker purplish maroon.  It is really all over the place.  I was under the impression that we standardized the colors a few years back when the logo was revamped, but is seems we often stray.

I understand some schools have a different color for the academic and athletic side of the house ,but it seems that our athletic teams also use different shades or maroon/red.  Penn State recently revamped their academic logo, and it is a lighter shade of blue than the navy their sports team use.  Apparently the lighter blue is the official school color, but Paterno changed the football jerseys to Navy years ago, and the rest of the athletic department eventually followed.

Is that what we have at Lafayette?  Have the sports teams officially adopted a shade of red/maroon that is different than the color of the academic logo?  Don't yell at me, this is just an observation and not a complaint.  Maybe I am just color blind and everything I wrote above is complete nonsense.

It sounds like a marketing scheme. If you have a maroon shirt and you see one that's more red or black they hope you buy one of the new colors. Afterall, you already have a maroon one.  Money matters!

Here's the "official" visual identity manual for the college:

For the athletic brand, the "maroon" color is PMS (Pantone Matching System) 202.  The RGB/CMYK/HTML colors are slightly different depending on whether you're using coated or uncoated paper.

PMS is supposed to be the industry standard.  Regrettably, apparel manufacturers don't always use dyes that hold the color properly and a lot depends on the nature of the fabric being dyed.  It's just as bad (or worse) with printing because inks can be so variable.

But yes, there is an "official" Lafayette maroon - PMS 202 - and this is it:

So to use a football analogy - it's not the scheme, it's the execution. Cool

When I do "amateur" graphics on this board, I cheat - I start with "pure red" and I simply drop the HSV "value" component by 50%.  It takes two seconds.  That gives a nice approximation that's easy to remember and to work with.  My unofficial "maroon" looks like this:

DISCLAIMER: I know nothing whatsoever about printing, inks, dyes, color chemistry, digital graphic rendering or fabrics.  I'm just an idiot with a Pardee Hall education who likes to play with stuff on his laptop.  Nor do I know anyone connected with Lafayette marketing or communications.  This is just my take on it.

Also - an older edition of the color and logo standards for athletics (2009) is here:

http://communications.lafayette.e...e-Athletics-Identity-LRG-2010.pdf

That edition had an official Lafayette "gold" color for athletics, defined as PMS 873:

The gold color pretty much seems to have been replaced by the hated "None More Black" (with apologies to Nigel Tufnel of course):

That hat has a lot of wins.
