LC-LU sports "Rivalry"--Seriously?

Out of the 20 sports we share with Lehigh, we are competitive in only 6. Any other teams that play Lehigh have absolutely no chance of victory.  None.  They're just exhibitions.  Things have never been worse.  While it's on your watch, Bruce, the Lafayette model is to blame.  We want to stay small and win. (And let's not forget a coach (or two or three) past his/her prime.)  Ain't happenin'.

Baseball, Golf, Men's and Women's Soccer--because it's a low scoring game, Field Hockey, and Women's Lacrosse

Used to be competitive against Lehigh in Men's Tennis but that program has also gone in the tank.

Sad.

my understanding is the Walter Oeschle wanted to give money for a tennis center, the school wanted something else but he died and the school was left without his gift at all.

That is disappointing. There is no reason Lafayette should not be competitive at men's tennis. Lehigh's tennis center puts them well above us.

Therein lies the problem, how can a small Liberal Arts college compete financially with the bigger schools in the PL?

Major sport dollars are comparable, especially football and basketball money. Our minor sports are perhaps underfunded, I'll grant that but pointing to money is a crutch. How can that be used to explain losses to schools with real money issues? Money can only be used as a limited rationale to describe the pitiful records of ALL of our teams. Lack of a winning culture, lack of incentives, lack of responsibility, and lack of management. They're more significant reasons.

No - I think it's money...

We don't have a single men's cross country runner who could make Lehigh's TEAM. We have maybe two women's swimmers who could. The "exhibition" analogy is accurate - they are wasting gas to drive to Easton to "compete."

You can't convince me that we're being so thoroughly dominated because our training falls short. We aren't getting any kids they want. And I'm willing to bet that MONEY is an issue.

I don't expect anyone to get up in arms over our inability to even make Lehigh sweat in a cross country meet - but the results are mindnumbingly bad.

The men's XC team can only get better from where it was last season. Let's hope the new distance coach can recruit some quality freshmen to add to the squad.

Here are some fully funded "minor" sports
field hockey ( four losing seasons, made playoffs two of those years)
women's lacrosse ( losing seasons, made playoffs once in the last four years)
Men's soccer (same)
women's basketball ( I'll call it minor because of the lack of crowds)
Women's soccer-getting better but still losing

All have scholarships, paid coaches ( but may be underpaid), FH had a paid trip to Spain two years ago. In several cases much of the operating funding comes from donations ( much like football).

Let's also hope that 4 of the men's cross country runners don't drop out during the season, like last year.
