Union's Levi Giese was named as the John Q. Hammons Holiday Hoopla Basketball Tournament's Most Valuable Player, and Giese helped cement the award thanks to a play on Saturday night that helped the Union boys win the tournament's title game.
With Fort Smith (Ark.) Southside piecing together a ferocious comeback, Giese had a dunk and made the following free throw to give momentum back to Union (4-0) and help the Redskins earn a 47-38 win over Southside on Saturday night at Union High School.
"We needed a score right then and Levi came through with a big play," said Union head coach Rudy Garcia of Giese, who had 14 points. "That was a big basket and gave us back the momentum."
Southside (7-2), down by 17 in the first half, had pulled within 40-34 with 3:22 left in the game. Giese, however, converted the traditional three-point play as part of a five-point Union spurt that pushed the Redskin lead back to double digits.

Thanks for the update LCLF, but why weren't you at tonight's game? We could have used you and Geise.
It was an encouraging loss, if there is such a thing. Robert Morris is better than everyone we've played except Temple, Colorado and Hartford. They are very athletic and very physical and experienced, all but one of those playing were juniors and seniors.
We got off to a shaky start as RM controlled the inside. AB was the only guy scoring and at one time it was RM 12, AB 10. We were down by 10 at the half. I think Andrew had 21.
The second half was probably the best half we played all season. The team really competed and matched RMs intensity, and was outscored by 37-34. Brown finished with 30. Another nice game by Kari, 12 pts, 4 assist. Good to have Gruner back - 11 points. Willen continuing to look better with each game - 6 rbds and 9 points, I think all in the paint.
As I posted in the recruiting thread, I think Giese is going to give us that athletic presence inside that we don't have.
One of the more bizarre plays I've seen in awhile, RM's coach Mike Rice was hit by a Lafayette pass while partially on the court. (I mean this guy is worse than Bill Gibbons, he complained on every call)). The ball went out of bounds and was awarded to RM after a long conference. Rice called the official over and admitted it hit him. After another conference RM was still awarded the ball. I don't understand how the officials could penalize us by awarding the ball to RM. Anyone know the rule?
Finally, things must really be getting tight. In an effort to reduce expenses, President Weiss' kids are now maning the mops under the baskets.

A strange play to be sure. I have no idea what the rule is, but, I was disappointed that Fran wasn't playing defense in the first half for us as well!

if rice was on the court he should have been assessed a technical foul. the relevant violation refers to preventing continuous play, of which a coach is obviously guilty if he gets hit with the basketball while on the court.
the violation (10.6.2.h):
Quote:
Delaying the game by preventing the ball from being promptly made live or by preventing continuous play, such as bench personnel entering the playing court before player activity has been terminated. In such a case, when the delay does not interfere with play, it shall be ignored.

I quizzed a HS official on this and he said a technical should have been assessed for being out of the coaches box. I don't know if he was completely on the court, but, he at least had one foot and his arm in play. IMO the 3 zebras at this game were all poor. Usually one or two of them have to carry the others but these guys were a joke. If this is the way that play is going and how they are or not going to call games, the players are going to have to start wearing padding and helmets. I realize it's not HS ball anymore, but, as physical as it was in the first half in particular, I thought punches would eventually be thrown.

the ncaa point of emphasis guidelines on the coaches box instruct officials to give coaches a warning before issuing a technical foul for a violation, so its not quite that easy.

It would seem to me that a warning would be appropiate if a coach was on the court yelling at officials. But in this case, the coach actually interfered with play causing a change of possession that benefited his team. Rice yelled to O Hanlon that he had touched the ball. Then after the first conference which resulted in awarding possession to RM, Rice called an official over and told him that he had touched the ball. There was another conference and RM was still given possession. There was no warning given.
RMs play was physical but I didn't think rough or dirty. Actually, I though it did our guys, especially the younger guys without much experience, some good. I think they learned that you have to match the other teams intensity and desire to win. I'm hoping we get a few inside guys that can play like that and control the game.
