Marquette to begin play in Big East Lax

Marquette will start men's and women's competition in the Big East beginning in 2013.

"Both Marquette lacrosse teams will be fully funded with the maximum number of scholarships, and coaches, allowed by the NCAA. The average roster size for a Division I women's lacrosse team is 25.5 student-athletes compared to 44.8 individuals on the men's side, according to the latest NCAA Sports Sponsorship and Participation Rates Report."

Marquette's Strategic Study for starting full scholarship lacrosse is worth a read:

"Lacrosse is relatively easy for fans to learn and understand; put the ball in the net to score."

Ummm . . . I suppose you could say that about basketball as well.  Lacrosse actually is a very intricate, complex game - but once you learn it, it's great fun to play and watch.  The trouble is, it just doesn't translate well to television/video.  Fans in the stands tend to focus more on where the ball isn't while the cameras focus on where the ball is.

I think the sport i great but at times I can not stand to watch it on TV.  All you hear is (I think) one of the coaches screaming at the top of his lungs.  I'm not sure exactly who it is that is yelling, but it is so annoying.

What you're probably hearing is the goalie during attack calling out the sets and the ball location.  The defenders and defending midfielders typically have their backs to the play and cannot see who has the ball and where it is on the field in relation to the goal.  You'll hear the goalie yell out things like:

"Ball Side Right, Top Right, X"  (or Top Left, Top Middle, Side Left, Pipe Left, Pipe Right, Bottom Left, Bottom Right.) - This tells defenders where the ball is on the field.  "X" means the area behind the goal; most offensive plays originate at "X."

"Cutter" - Offensive player is cutting to the net looking for a pass.

"Ball down" - Any time the ball is on the ground. (Everyone usually shouts this at once)

"Slide" - Bring an extra man to the person with the ball.

"Clear" - The goalie has the ball, so break out and look for a pass.

"Mark up" or "Number up" - Find the player you are guarding.

"Check" - Check sticks because there is a dangerous pass coming.

Here's a good lexicon of lacrosse terminology - it's a different language:
