MEN'S LACROSSE DEFEATS NAVY, 15-8

Rappolt Friday @ 7:00 PM.  A Pard win against the perennial National title-contending Mids could send shock waves through the lacrosse world.

The Lafayette message board on laxpower is quite active and it shows a general recognition from the NCAA lacrosse community in general how little support is given to Lafayette lacrosse.  Navy wanted to broadcast tomorrow's game, for example.  But Lafayette does not have a lacrosse field.  Its team plays on a hard astroturf surface designed for field hockey, and there is no electricity or other facility for broadcast.  This is unusual for a top 20 Division I team, it seems.

It is true it is an Astro-Turf field designed for FH, it is not true that there can not be a televised game.  There have been two televised field hockey  games one was 4 years ago against Penn and the other was ag Lehigh on the same day the field was dedicated in 2001 I believe. Gary Laubach and John Leone did the play by play for RCN.

What is there is not adequate for Gametracker or for WNAV, according to those who tried to set up a broadcast of Friday's game.  Perhaps they are misinformed.

Game tracker and a Net feed require a  connection to the internet which there is none  there. I am not sure if there is one at all at Metzger. I would think that would be easy to fix since I presume there is telephone service there and a wireless connection is not all that expensive. I have one at home.

When I was in school I remember the Lax team playing on the Soccer field.  Perhaps the mushy ground this time of year is simply inadequate to play on until April?

Lacrosse is tough on grass, especially the way it is played these days.  The area around the net can get torn to shreds.  Soccer is now a scholarship sport at Lafayette as well, and it looks like the soccer pitch has been specially re-sodded for soccer play only.  There's no way it could be used for lacrosse right now, as much as I'd like to see it.  Plus, the kids have been practicing on the astro-tundra.

It's either Rappolt or Fisher.

NB - as much as they're complaining about costs and cutting recruiting, Harvard just built a bubble so the laxers can practice indoors.

This is HUGE.  These guys played in the National Championship Game a couple of years ago.

I am amazed.

This has been a bizzare year with a bball team that was picked to be last going to championship and this improbable group of hard nosed lacrosse player now beating Navy. This cheered up my Friday.

I want Lehigh, at Fisher Field.  I want 1,000 fans.  I want blood, complete domination and total humiliation.  I want a shutout.

Thank you for listening.

Just to put into perspective how far this team has come, the seven-goal loss last night was the largest margin of defeat for Navy ever, in a Patriot League contest, regular season or tournament.  The Pards' 15 goals marked the most goals scored against Navy ever, by a Patriot League foe.

Bucknell is next (after spring break) and they are really good - not just this year but historically.  Our guys must be on an amazing high right now heading off to family or warm spots after the biggest lax win in memory.  The Bison will be a tough, tough game.  Then Drexel after that.  But we seem to have one of those teams that is just that - a team, that plays with a sixth sense about where each of the other guys is going to be and how they're going to react at any given moment.

Is this a coinsidence or what, considering our Pres. comes from perennial power JH?

Might we ever see Hopkins on the regular season schedule?  That would be great.  I'm sure the issue has come up before, but Hopkins would never schedule Lafayette because its RPI would sink just for scheduling us - just like when we pummeled Wagner this year but sank in the rankings merely for having played them, regardless of the outcome.

Now, with the New Era of Lafayette Lacrosse, we could see Loyola, Georgetown or even Virginia on the schedule, though I doubt any of those elite powers would consider play at Metzgar under any circumstances - Loyola just opened a $62 million lacrosse-only facility that seats 6000+ and it sells out.

Don't know if this is a 'new era' of lacrosse at Lafayette... we still have many hurdles to overcome, as noted by that article.  If we can sustain winning for a few years, we might very well gain respectability.

Fisher Stadium could be our 'lacrosse facility.'  If we have a successful program, it would easily attract the lacrosse mad families from Morris County, Bergen, and central NJ.  What is the closest school with a respectable program?  Rutgers? Blah... Hofstra? Stony Brook?  Long Island... too far.  Princeton? Yes, but Lafayette is a bit easier to get to from northern NJ.

If we rehab Kirby ever, we could demolish the Maroon Club strength center and turn it into a 'mobile varsity house' for which ever team will be playing at Fisher.

This was great!  I was expecting a Lafayette-Columbia hurricane game crowd but there was a lot of fans in the stands.  What immeadiately struck me was how much bigger Navy was... and we just have great ball movement and unselfish play.  A few guys could have taken shots but they waited for the right time hit an open guy or an attacker streaking to the net.
