Men's Soccer - scholarship recruiting class

Congratulations to Dennis and his staff on their first scholarship recruiting class - seven athletes, 2 forwards, 3 midfielders, a defender and a goalkeeper.

no need

The other sports are all marginal. The Patriot League is basically Division III quality in quite a few sports and yes when baseball or some other team breaks through it is nice but really why put many resources into anything besides football and M and W basketball.

My eyes are popping out of my head as I read about BJ Glenn. We could have a front line of Hawkins, Price and Glenn---Dennis ought to be drooling. Oaks Field at Bourger Stadium is going to be an exciting venue next year.

Here's a picture of our start recruit:

What a class! I'd seen an article describing Kustas as maybe the best player in NJ and was then bummed out when I read the following in the Inquirer:

Stephen Macurdy, Rancocas Valley, senior, midfielder: He was the South Jersey Soccer Coaches' Association midfielder of the year. Macurdy overcame a hamstring injury that nagged him through the season to score eight goals (20 in his career) and rattle opposing defenses. He will continue at Lafayette.

Andreas Kustas, Rancocas Valley, senior, back: Superior at throw-ins that found their way into the net, Kustas was a skilled ballhandler who could turn the sweeper position into a point of attack. A first-team all-Group 4 choice for the third consecutive year, he will play for Lehigh.///////

Glad he's with us!

The following article has Macurdy and Kustas ranked #11 and #12 in their RVHS class of 571. Scholarships in action, congrats to Coach Bohn and staff:

jerkwater: I have to disagree with your assessment of the other sports. patriot League men's lacrosse is one of the toughest in the country. Navy, Army, Bucknell, i feel bad for Terry. At least now he has the scholarships to combat these teams.

Men's soccer is no cake walk either. I think Lehigh finished in the top 20 last year. American made it to then national round of 16 in field hockey.

There are some good quality sports. None get the attention of basketball and football and that is a shame.

Baseball in the northeast is a tough sell. If I was any good at baseball coming out of high school and not drafted, I would head south. The coldest temps you'll play in is 50 degrees. Metzgar fields in March and April is not fun.

Not if you're realistic about your ML chances and you're serious about your academics. There is so much baseball talent out there. Heck, we've got players LEAVING Florida to join us. This Fla product Ezekiel will be a blast to watch at the plate this year. As I've posted before, growing up in NJ during the sixties and playing baseball, Lafayette was well known to me as a "good baseball school." Norm Gigon had real good teams in the 70s. Coach Kinney has us back on the map. Excellent team this year with a favorable home schedule.

Question on the men's soccer scholarships, please. When the announcement was made last spring that LC would offer scholarships in the four sports--wasn't it for a total of eight scholarships in both FH and M soccer? I assumed two per year. Am I wrong, do the coaches have flexibility in awarding them?
Lafalum

Actually in field hockey and soccer you can award partial scholarships so Dennis and Ann can add the merit aid to need based and make 8 scholarships into the 12 or 13 that is allowed under NCAA rules.
IN basketball and football they only have "counters" which means all or none. 12 scholarships to 12 people.

Thoughts on next year's team and '07 recruits from College Soccer News:

Absolutely right. The PL is one of the nation's top lacrosse leagues. Navy made it into the top 5 this year, Bucknell edged into the top ten earlier this year, Army has been top 10 in recent years, and Colgate was top 17 or so at the end of the year.

As you point out, men's soccer is fairly strong, especially considering that many PL schools have limited or no scholarships. Bucknell beat George Mason in the first round of the NCAA's this year, and Lehigh not only got an at-large bid but won their first round game.

In women's soccer, Navy was ranked in the top 20 during the year.

As for other sports, some are not strong relative to the big conferences. However all are FAR better than D3. For a comparable league, look at the MAAC. The PL is better in virtually every sport.

The Truth may well have info that I don't, but as far as has been publicly announced, LC does not grant scholarships in M or W lacrosse.

The power of scholarships is demonstrated in the quality of Colgate's recent top recruits and their win over Syracuse.

Bucknell does a great job pretty much across the board in men's sports. Looking at the expense numbers--BU and LC are pretty much identical in total athletically related aid and close in total expenses for FB and BB combined (although with a much different distribution). There's a significant difference (about 700k), however, in M's expenses other than FB and BB, which I guess indicates emphasis--ie salaries, enhanced travel budgets (as seen in the greater operating expenses), etc. With the smaller pie to divvy up, presumably LC has to pick and choose which sports to emphasize. (M soccer for instance with scholartships, field improvements and with the effort ($$) put forth to retain Coach Bohn). Some have suggested increasing cash flow through a higher enrollment would help. Something the admin seems reluctant to do.
