In my house we cheer for four things: Lafayette, the Washington Redskins, Tiger Woods and, in everything else, the underdog. Because the Lafayette women's team has been an underdog for the past decade they've become almost an obsession of mine. I've always liked women's basketball---dunks don't excite me (seriously, who isn't bored at a slam dunk competition?)--good passing, spacing and defense make a good women's team.
And tonight the Leopards drew a pretty nice crowd for themselves. It looked like quite a few fans made the trip from Maryland to cheer on "The Mount" but still there was some good student support and a few guys who REALLY seeme to like VVDV (they were great, I hope they come back).
I want a .500 season for this team. I don't want it as much as Tammy wants it, or the players want it but I've suffered through a LOT of ugly basketball and I think it's time we start putting out a decent product.
And it starts with winning at home. We did a good job of it last season especially in league games, but tonight we blew a VERY winnable game in the Kirby Sports Center.
If Tammy leaves any legacy at all it will be that her players enthusiasm never wanes and they give it all every darn game. For most of her career that hasn't been nearly enough as she just hasn't had the talent to get much in the way of wins...But don't look now---but she actually has a pretty nice team.
But they didn't win tonight. I think The Mount will do better than the 8th place they are expected to be in the NEC, but this is one of those games that WE had the better team and THEY won the game in OUR gym.
It almost seemed like Tammy and the Mount St. Mary's coach had a tacit agreement to keep the game short as neither team seemed remotely interested in taking it down low and drawing fouls. The first half was over in about 24 minutes real time. There were 4 free-throws the entire half. The second half saw a little more traffic in the paint--but not enough for this Leopard.
Purr I thought could've had a field day in this game and was only in 9 minutes. I honestly couldn't figure that out. We were shooting horribly and none of their post players had very good feet. I think we missed on not getting her more involved.
My favorite player the last couple of seasons has been Emily Garner. She has the mid-range jumper SOO missing from todays skill-set and she knows how to get to the basket. I really hope she's well enough to play soon.
Lakeisha Wright has "presence." She does things that nobody else on the team can do and she's only a freshman. She has all the tools to be special. She didn't score much tonight but she had 5 boards, led the team in assists with 6 and had two incredible blocks. She handles as well as our guards and bangs as well as our forwards. She doesn't look at all like a freshman--I said it yesterday and I'll say it again today---she might turn out to be the best player we've had in 2 decades.
OVerall though, this was a game where we were definitely the better team but we decided to make it a jump-shot competition (which we lost badly--shooting a dismal 33% from the field) rather than a basketball game.
There's a lot to like about this team---particularly with the young talent---let's hope we can turn it into wins.

more bad news
Purr only played 9 minutes because of her knee injury. It looks as if it may be worse than first thought. I am hearing that she will have the Knee scoped and will miss 3 to 4 weeks. We are going to need our other big kids to step up. Get well soon #33

Thanks for the info. With her playing hurt and Garner out we really struggled making things happen down low last night.
We are definiitely going to see need some quality time out of Niquette, Smith and Virgin. Virgin looks to have the most...how you say..."upside" of the bunch.
And I hope it goes without saying (although my sorry a$$ didn't say it the first time around but we have this editing feature!) that Purr is able to get well soon.
