Navy

7-4 Lafayette
28 degrees and windy
Maybe 150 people here?
9-5 end of 3.
9-8. 7:43 left.
pardfan

Just started watching with 13:30 left and a 9-5 lead.  This is torture.  It is now 9-8 with about 5 minutes left.
bethlehempard

9-8. 2:53 left.
30 second holding on Navy.
2:25 left.
Injury can't see who. Lafayette.
Navy in possession time out with 1:41 left. No. 6
pardfan

McAvoy going down  What were the chances?
bethlehempard

He was able to walk off.
One minute left.
39 seconds penalty on Navy

9-8 WIN.

I see so few anymore.
pardfan

Santa Claus....Easter Bunny....Lafayette 9  Navy 8
Bogus Megapardus

They nearly blew a 4 goal lead in the 4th. Now go beat Lehigh.

Case study in holding on for dear life in the 13:30 I saw. But A WIN IS A WIN!
The Maroon

Superb win! While some pretentious blowhards will find a way to make it a negative...
Forget it.  Great win!

What's with the "pretentious blowhard" stuff?  Nobody is saying or will say anything of the sort.  Why start something?

After Lafayette scored to make it 8-4, Navy needed about eight seconds to make it 8-5. As this game is a mystery to me but fun to watch, even in the cold, I assume that isn't unusual.
There were some glum Navy fans. They didn't see this coming.
The fencing tournament filled Kirby. That is really hard to figure out. Lacrosse I might grasp a little of some day. Fencing, no.
As for the injury, I think he was pushed from behind but I didn't see anything out of hand. Without the benefit of replay.
The last lax win I saw was over the Crusaders a couple years ago.
Today was fun. Cold but fun.
Again, wouldn't it be more fun to have teams that win roughly half the time and coaches who were, over time, held accountable?
That's not a negative comment. Just a hint of a dream of respectability. Of being "competitive in the Patriot League."
Go Pards!

I'm fairly certain the "pretentious blowhard" comment was directed at me.

I thoroughly enjoyed this win - a few heart stopping moments at the end.  But a win over Navy in Lax is to be savored.  Big time congrats to the players and coaches.    I really like it when we beat the service academies although I have never been to Annapolis.  West Point, well that is another story.

Glad to have you back, Bogie!  Very Happy

Suspect I'm another "blow hard" in your mind - which is fine.  Great win.  Did not watch so have only the stats to rely on and that's not really insightful.  Anyone see what the underlying difference was?

"Pretentious blowhard."
I think I've earned the title. Give credit where it's due.

I'm having a Kirk Douglas moment: "I am Spartacus" "No, I am." "NO I AM!"
I wish the young Jean Simmons were here too.

My untutored perspective was, Lafayette's offense controlled the game for long stretches of the third. Then the defense clamped down very late.

The underlying difference, IMHO - Gaining possession even when we lost the FO and then maintaining that possession for longer than usual; outstanding play of goalie Anastos in critical spots; Navy's less-than-stellar ball handing in critical spots; Pards stout man-down defense (and Navy's failure to convert on EMO); exceptional games for Eric Joseph and Scott McEvoy; Erik Cannon's tenacity (he's still the best all-around player on the team); Pards had comparatively few penalties (which Navy could not convert); turnover ratio was not out of sync (the only really harmful turnovers happened very late in the game).

Also leading a game wire to wire over a program that won the National Championship in the not-too-distant past might prove helpful to this team's confidence and morale.

Will the real Pretentious Blowhard please stand up? Maybe we should do a poll . . . Rolling Eyes

Do you mean played for the National Championship?  Navy has never won the tournament.

Without looking it up, I would have guessed that Navy's most recent trip to the championship game was more recent than 2004 . . . which still counts as the not-too-distant past in my book.
WVPard

Great win.  Big one up next.

Not interested in name calling and I won't do it again. It isn't in the spirit of this forum and none of you guys have stooped to it - so in one sense I apologize.

I just thought the tone would be of universal elation surrounding this game.

This program - for all practical purposes - is fighting the battle that Fran did a decade ago. There are scholarships - but not nearly enough of them - and the teams we play are almost all fully-funded...The analogies or comparisons to the women's program fall flat when you realize they have 3.5 times as many scholarships out there. THAT is the difference - not creative coaching or magic "can do" attitude...

To pull out a W against Navy in this environment - it may be Lafayette's biggest win an ANY sport this year.
