Option for Saturday's GameHey Leopard fans,
My name is Ryan Holt and I'm the student radio play-by-play man for Holy Cross' student radio station as well as the All-Access feed for Saturday's game.
Just wanted to forewarn everyone here that through no fault of our own, there have been problems with the CBS College Sports picking up the feed which leads to delayed starts and sometimes frozen video.
Hopefully, this won't be the case on Saturday and the video will work perfect. However, if it doesn't and you're looking for an option to listen to the game, I'm just leaving our link. Although we certainly have an HC slant (as well as Boston accents) we have been commended for our professionalism and dedication to calling good games.
Good luck to your guys Saturday.

I'm begging for it to happen. I've been on a downer ever since my team did not bother to show up for THE Game # 144. KenZ would be like a highlight film with end to end bloopers. A chuckle or two would be a welcome tonic, given the current state of Lafayette athletics.

KenZ is a Bucknell Buffalo loyalist with a warped sense of humor. bison137, a fellow Buffalo, is a s _ _ t stirrer of some prominence who loves to drop the KenZ bomb every now and again for effect.

That's only because you haven't yet been exposed to his dark side. He can be ugly and, as noted above, he hangs with a bad crowd.

I wrote it on the HC forum but i was very disappointed with the way Brown conducted himself today. He took a few cheap shots and complained every play.
Other than that, I thought it was a well played game. Your guy Willen is very good and will be a force in the future.
Good luck to you guys the rest of the way.

Thanks, HCHolty10. Perhaps it's time for us to look to our future and give some of our other guys a chance.

I'm not ready to give up on Andrew yet. No doubt about it, he has struggled the last few games. And, he certainly doesn't have the talent surrounding him that he had last year. The guy's a winner and I'm sure his stroke will return. I think he's now pressing which only makes things worse. I didn't see todays game so I can't say what set him off but I have noticed that teams have been trying to manhandling him (Robert Morris, Penn State, MSM).

I'm sure the MO is now to get in his grill which will throw him off his game. (he got called for a double foul with a HC kid) He's been a marked man all year. All the more reason for others to step up. We're averaging in the 60's and we are always one of the top scoring teams in the league.

fran stood in front of the bench after the altercation and continuously said to the official "you let this happen. he gets fouled all game and you let it go. you let this happen, you let this happen." I think Andrew is frustrated and gets a very bad rap.
i'm fully aware of the understood bias of every audio or video broadcast (see john leone for the LC telecasts). However after the way the HC commentators made personal comments about Bilal, i watched Saturday's game on mute. "professionalism and dedication" need to be improved.

1. What comments specifically?
2. Are you talking about the Holy Cross student announcers or the station that carries the Holy Cross game in the Worcester area (Bob Fouracre etc)?
3. I thought Brown got very frustrated during the game and lost control at times.

He's talking about the All-Access broadcast and thus myself. Comments about Bilal? Who is Bilal and what comments were made?
Sure, we were on Brown a little because he complained every time to the officials. You have to remember we are on the radio first, video second so we tend to over-emphasize certain things to kind of bring the game to life.
Do I think we are bias? Sure. Do I think we are "un-professional" in the "derogatory" sense of the word? No.
We have tremendous respect for Brown and his game but, to be quite honest with you, when you visibly PUSH two players after the whistle (Pat Doherty and VanderBaan) we are going to be a little turned off by you.
Could you please provide comments about which you are a little turned off by? I mean to be honest with you, we appreciate the feedback but, again after hearing the All-Access broadcasts both from professional people and student broadcasts, we are probably the least biased and most balanced broadcast. Then again, even if we were clearly on the HC side, it shouldn't take away from the actual broadcast. I get excited when any player dunks or hits a three.

Although the post was not very clear, I assumed Bilal was Bilal Abdullah and thus was directed at some perceived slight from a broadcast from last year. What the issue was I have no idea - that's why I asked my questions?

OK, Well the comments made last year, whatever they were, were made by two commentators who are no longer at Holy Cross. I'd like to know what they were anyways but, Rob and Steve were very good on last year's games as well.

The Holy Cross gameThe problems with the announcers were from last year. The league office received multiple complaints about the Holy Cross all access broadcasters last year (not Bob Fouracre). So, while you may have thought the announcers were doing a professional job, the people and fans at other schools and eventually the league office took umbrage with their broadcasts.
Everyone understands that there is a natural bias when doing games, but some of the instances crossed the line. One example was of the announcers making fun of the appearance of a player -- Bilal Abdullah -- because he played without a dental bridge during games. Professional announcers of any age don't do that. There were many complaints as the games are part of the Patriot League package and people have certain expectations from the league in terms of quality.
As for Saturday's game, Brown was clutched and grabbed the entire game. The officials didn't call handchecking which is great for Holy Cross because it is a physical team. Lafayette runs a finesse motion offense and relies on perimeter scoring which is hard to do when a defender is grabbing at your best player the entire game. If I were him, I would have been throwing elbows too. It's Division I basketball and guys are going to push each other.
While I don't think the officiating was purposefully slanted to one side, it was still bad as evidenced by the play when the Holy Cross defender knocked Brown out of bounds in front of the Lafayette bench. No foul was called and Holy Cross was awarded the possession. The missed call on a play that was the utter definition of goaltending was further proof that the three guys doing the game either shouldn't be working together or shouldn't be Division I officials at all.

Well whatever comments that were made were in the past. However, we have only been commended by our school and actually Patriot League officials (including the Commish) for doing a great job. This was during the Patriot League soccer finals last year at Holy Cross. Holy Cross and American I believe are the only broadcasts on All-Access in which students are used and not to sound egotistical, you can tell the American guys are students.
We apologize if you feel some comment was made inappropriately and I will personally go back in the archives and see if I can find the game and moment.

OK, so I have the game up and running from a year ago.. I'll just post any "suspect" instances. I honestly was not calling the game so I do not remember any comments.
1) At 20-17 Lafayette, Abdullah picks Tim Clifford and Clifford leaves with a bloody eye which required stitches. There was nothing bad said other than "Abdullah picked Clifford and caught him up high."
2) 25-19 Lafayette, OUR commentators remark how awful a free throw Keister (Holy Cross) just put up.
3) 29-25 Lafayette, Abdullah falls down after an offensive rebound and the commentators remarked how he flailed. After the rebound you can audibly hear Abdullah scream "(Insert F) UCK" to which the crowd Booed.
OK, I just watched the first half from about 18 minutes onward and I didn't hear anything other than both teams were getting on the officials. I don't have time to watch the second half right now unfortunately. If you remember where it was, let me know.

Can you do the Steelers vs. Cowboys Super bowl game from 1977?

Just curious what the comment could have been, that's all. Personally and from the views of others, we are on par with what is out there. From listening to other student broadcasts we are typically much much better and in some cases are on par with the professionals. I was just curious as to what the comment was. One of those in question now works at ESPN and I do hockey play-by-play professionally some weekends for a Division 1 school (not Holy Cross) but, as I said, we're not perfect and we appreciate feedback. I would just like to know from a Lafayette perspective what was offensive.

Enough of this. Let's agree to disagree - or some such. So, Holy Cross broadcasters don't always see the opposing players as the best, brightest and most sportsmanlike. I'm sure that opposing fans, listening to Laubach and Leone, would conclude that "they love us; they revere us" Ain't gonna happen. They're all homers - and you act surprised.
A real nice gesture by Mr. HCholty10 has been turned into a pile of dog poop. Why? To what purpose? Shape up, Pards.

This one is painful.
Most visiting teams dislike the home team's broadcast mainly becasue they tend to be biased and not say the most flattering things abou thte opposing teams. It happens everywhere. I know that our own John Leone and Gary laubach have also been criticized for their broadcast. Knowing both of them very well, I found it laughable but it's not up to me to decide if what they say is inappropriate or not.
I refuse to watch a TV69 broadcast game of the Lafayette-Lehigh telecast (or any Lehigh game) with the sound on. I find their broadcaster unprofessional. Heck in the 2007 game, they kept referring to our QB as Joe Curley. i would think you would make a point to know the name of the opposing team's starting QB.
My point is it happens everywhere across the country. There are complaints; some documented, some not documented. Get over it and let's move on.
another point is there has always been bad blood between HC and Lafayette on the basketball court. These games are always physical as are most league games. Andrew Brown had better get used to it because he has 13 more league games and he can expect the same treatment. Some nights the refs may call it, some nights they may not. Fran's job is to work the referee's, Brown's job is to keep working on the court. I'm sure this is not the first time he's been grabbed and bumped. I'm sure outside shooters from each team in the league have been bumped and grabbed excessively in games. If it is excessive, i'm sure a complaint can be filed through the league office and they can use videos of the game as proof. The league office can address it with the referees.

Couldn't agree more with Carney. We all have our homers but they're our homers. Let's not pretend or be shocked it is otherwise. If I have to hear one more time from L and L how superior our patriot league student athletes are to other league's student athlete's I'm going to throw up. ( haven't seen any Rhodes Scholars lately)
When I watch a game all I'm interested in is how much we are able to win our game by and if we lose how we can get better. At that moment that's all I care about. I don't care if 1/2 the team has term papers or just did an all nighter.
As for our friends from HC I wouldn't take any of this all that seriously.
