That's what we're talkin' about! Pards bounce back from a tough loss in the series opener to sweep yesterday and a huge come from behind win today featuring 6 ribbies for Pisarri and some nice relief work from a couple frosh.
After all the mouthiness from the Brown dugout Friday, this had to be very satifsfying payback for our kids. Congratulations!

Well, when you get to the 4th game of the series and the 4th pitcher, you usually get a high scoring game. It certainly sarted out that way as LU torched Hanna and Verdon for 5 runs in the first. It looked like LUs starter Angelo didn't have much but he was so erratic we had trouble hitting him. He left in the 6th with a 6-2 lead. Meanwhile, Dickson came in for us and pitched 4 good innings giving up only 1 run. We picked up 3 runs in the 6th off Kent to close it to 6-5. LU got a 2 run shot off Rems to up the lead to 8-5. He was replaced by the sidearming FR Snell, who appears to be the new closer. We got one more off Kent in the 8th and LU brought in Longernecker who gave up the 3 run shot over the rightfield fence to Pisarri. Snell shut em down 1-2-3 in the 9th.
I think HC and BU split today which means LC and BU are both 7-5. Army and navy were both 5-5 starting the day so one of them could also possibly be tied for first at 7-5. Or, they could both be 6-6. Anyway, we are home this weekend for four with HC and next weekend home for four with Army. We control our own destiny. If we win all eight the worst that can happen is we tie for first with Navy.

Andy, you on the clock or are you going to Highland Falls this weekend? I'm running a tournament over the weekend but if the weather is decent, I may try to sneak away or the first game on Saturday.

Since my thread about the disappointing athletic year, softball and baseball have saved the day with their play in the postseason; the girls having won their way in and the guys backing in. As we saw at Kamine, Army is very strong. We need tight defense--cant give them anything--and the relievers have to be effective in these long games.
Another thing, X, in Panto's interview of Luick, his returning next year isnt broached, lending credence to the grad school rumor. I sure would enjoy another year of watching him.

Pards strand too many runners and drop first game 6-2. Zach pitched very well only giving up four hits through 6, but two hit batsmen preceeded a home run down the line. He left trailing 4-2 in the 7th. Must win game coming up.

Looks like Coach Kinney is bringing in a strong freshman class. Eleven recruits. Adresses our primary needs: pitching, pitching, pitching. Pretty decent stats on the mound from Casey (23-7 for his career), Gussaroff (8-1 senior season), and Massa (8-0 this season). Nice to see a 6'3" Infielder in Kelleher. Anxious to see Ruck who was drafted by the Padres.
Coach Ks done a good job of building a solid, competitive program in a pretty good baseball league. Army is there every year, Navy and BU usually decent, HC and LU have been up and down.

Good looking class! You pretty well covered it , X, picking up on the same points in the release as I did.
Young's SO numbers could indicate a future closer for us where we've been hurting.
Luick returning would be a huge shot in the arm, but I'm not optimistic. Any word?
One stark contrast between Army's excellent program under Satolano and our fine program under Kinney is the number of pitcher/position players they bring in. Both of their jumbo sized kids were dual players, right? As was their closer of a couple seasons ago, Dinga. Navy has a few, too. Cant think of any in recent past for us. Is that as a result of coaching philosophy/preference or just that the academies can attract better players nationally? In any event, Coach K is doing a great job with what I'd have to guess is little aid $ to offer.

I was told by someone who was at the graduation ceremony that Luick graduated with his class. That would make him ineligible to play for us but he has one year remaining if he goes to grad school.
Without doubt the best fielding 1B we ever had and a solid line-drive hitter.
Off the top of my head, I can't remember us having a pitcher who also was used at another position. But then again, I can't remember where my car keys are.

2 position players not to common on our level, I think. LU had a pretty good relief pitcher a couple of yrs ago,also a PH and played some outfield.
also I recall a SS who was an occasional RP.

Army baseball:
Army carries 5 players on their roster as both pitcher and position players. Among them:
#1 starter (in terms of wins with 8, second in innings pitched with 84.2) Koenigsfeld also hit .342 with 184 ABs.
#2 reliever McKague (23 appearances, 21.2 IP) was also their second best hitter with a .389 avg with 203 ABs.
All-American DH, Henshaw, also recorded 20.2 IP as reliever and spot starter.
Even All-American and leading hitter on the team, Moore, got a chance on the mound with 4 appearances.
Of course, their center fielder/closer, Milan Dinga, had graduated.
This is pretty unique to Army within the PL. I'd have to take a look at Navy whose P/OF Williams and closer/IF Melton come to mind. No Lafayette pitcher had even one official AB.

Based on your research Andy, I'd have to say they are just getting better players than we are. We all know that it takes a special kind of person to make the commitment to attend the Point. There coaching staff is good at finding those kids.

The best multiple-position player in PL history is likely Bucknell's Jason Buursma '08. Buursma made All-PL in different years as a 1B, DH, OF, and as a RP (twice) and was the PL POY as a senior. Also was tournament MVP in 2008 as he led BU to series wins over Army and Navy - earning either a win or a save in four consecutive one-run road wins where he pitched 11 scoreless innings and finished all four games. Also started all of the tourney games at OF or DH as the Bison clean-up hitter.
Buursma is the all-time PL leader in ERA (2.13) and #3 in saves, and also led the league in wins and ERA as a senior - the only year he was a full-time starter. On the PL hitting lists, he is #4 all-time in HR's and #2 in HR's for a season. Also is high on the all-time slugging pct list.
Buursma currently is pitching fairly well for Palm Beach - the Cardinals' High A team in the Florida State league - having earned a June promotion from their regular A team.
