Pepper PrizeThree athletes were nominated for the Pepper prize. Some of the others listed their athletic experience as attending "Latin Dance Class".
There was a day (long long ago) when you had to be an athlete to be considered. I just thought it was remarkable what is considered to be the Lafayette ideal!!
I wasn't all that impressed to be honest with you. Many really had no outside interests.

It seems that whomever does the voting doesnt read the criteria. I havent paid attention to the last few winners but when I was in school they always selected an academic type who never left the library. Did Brad Mauer win the Pepper Prize, someone like him would be the perfect canidate for the award. Great Student, great athlete, campus leader, and overall good person--guess that wasnt in the criteria

Brad Mauer did not win although he was nominated. As I understand it the Dean of the college's office does the nomination, and there is a vote. Faculty count 4 votes, seniors count 4 votes, juniors 3, sophs 2 and frosh 1.
Brad was the perfect candidate and should have won in my opinion. Then again I don't think Latin Dance is an athletic activity and according to the Dean and the public affairs office it is!!! I'll see if I can get those final four tickets for the national champioships....do we give scholarships??? Then again they only listed Latin Dance CLASS not actually doing it. Maybe next year someone will get credit for GOING to a fencing match, attending a golf practice or watching cheerleading practice. Sigh............

The Pepper Prize has become a glorified most popular contest. Very few surprises who is going to win. The reason you don't see many athletes is all sports have become year round. So the student-athletes don't have time to be involved in more then one or two extra curricular activity outside of their sport and major.

OK...There's a Pepper prize speech on Youtube. I hope that prospective students aren't watching it (I'm sure they've never heard of youtube!)
I've never understood the "Lafayette Ideal" concept and I don't think anyone else does so they vote for students who are different. (Watch the youtube speech...) The star quarterback or the beautiful sorority girl would never have a chance--no matter how qualified they were. that would be soooooooo "high school." One year I remember not a single whithe guy was nominated. It's obviously not a racist thing at a school with the demographics Lafayette has...but for some reason when it comes to choosing the "ideal" Lafayette student, they don't want somebody who is like most Lafayette students.
Volunteer work is huge. So is being an International student. If you happen to be an international student that does volunteer work....You can start counting your $100!
Yes...the prize is $100...At least that's what it was when I was in school. It's a good thing I was an academic misfit because if I won that baby I would've spent my speech bitching about the prize only be $100.
"What the hell am I supposed to do with $100?" I would say. "Do you know how much time $100 buys me at Lafayette? Not even half a day! Most of you spent more than $100 in gas driving to watch this God-forsaken ceremony...."

Actually it's 2 grand and you get your name on a plaque in Farinon. Being an international student is huge. Volunteering multiple times is added clout. No student government, no significant athleticsm, starting a club like the students against trash talkingt is big. Time in the library a must, rumour has it the librarian gets a vetol If recent awardees ever retun to campus or give money their award is forfeit.
What it does point out is what our faculty would like the student body to look like.

If you are in the ISA you are nearly gaurenteed to win. Why? They are one of the largest clubs on campus and likely turn out everyone in the club to vote, and they can do that becuase it is tight-knit. I think hardly anyone votes in this thing, much like student government, so I am not surprised a big voting bloc can make a winner. The past several PP winners were international or were in ISA. Take 2006 for instance. I was very disappointed that year because I had a class with the girl (bush foriegn policy no less) and she never spoke once aside from attendance! Is that a Lafayette ideal? Last year was an isa member, 06, 05 was the president of isa, 04 was not isa, 03 isa, 02 isa. Seriously here... Where is the diversity we so desperately want?
I am not sure who will win this year since there are two isa members on the ballot, one being the president. If thr isa members split the vote then someone else may win.
But, I think they should just get rid of the thing.
To an earlier question, a teacher/faculty member/student can nominate someone for the prize. The nominees are sent forms and fill out their activities and statement. It is sent to the dean, who selects the final 8 in a committee. Then the vote.
