PL Championship vs. American AT KIRBY!

Let's get it on!  These guys beat us at the buzzer in Kirby and it wasn't close in DC... should be a great game!

Too bad they shrunk the capacity of Kirby by 900 seats!
Pard4Life

Tickets are on sale NOW FYI... go to the online ticket site... grabbed mine... there are still seats available but I wouldn't wait until tomorrow.

Don't be scared by the virtual waiting room screen
Bogus Megapardus

Awesome.

I just got my tix after holding for a bit in the "virtual waiting room."  Section 13 Row K.  Should be just fine.  I wouldn't wait too long, folks.

Got my season tickets plus 1. Ditto on not waiting.

YES!  ROCK THE BUILDING!

I read the instructions after I purchased... but I am in a section with American seats... note*  the entire section that is 'reserved' for American is not blocked off.. so don't hesitate to buy there... my guess is that American will give some of their seats back to Lafayette.

It will be curious to see how many fans American brings... there were about 30-40 at Colgate.  You can't beat Kirby for the playoffs.. though the *new* arena has not exactly used for this type of game before.
Pard4Life

SELL OUT!!

Tried logging in to check... no virtual wait screen.. but there were no open sections on the seating chart..

GO PARDS!   Very Happy

I was at dinner Friday night with two American U. alums.  Both were vaguely aware that American U. had a basketball team of some sort, but neither knew what conference they played in or that AU was participating in the Patriot League tournament final four.  Neither had ever heard of Colgate, Bucknell or Lafayette.  (In contrast, just ask a Richmond, W&M, Delaware or Villanova fan if he's aware of these schools.  You'll get a much different answer.)

It appears that AU is trying to organize a fan bus for Wednesday night, but given the overall awareness of their students/alums I wouldn't be concerned.  I'm sure most of AU's allotment will be returned.
adcs2

Good luck with a student bus as they are on break.

One more go behind the mic for Jim Finnen, I assume?

What better way to go out than this?! 150 in Yankee Stadium, PL title game in Kirby! (Just keep him away from the lacrosse games and he goes out on top)

So great for the seniors and Jim... Gary and Leone were giving everyone the swan song on Thursday... not so fast my friend!

Now win the game!

Doubt that anything or anyone could keep Finnen away from this one.  I sure hope he hasn't already made plans for Florida.  He and the Mrs. will just have to cancel.

Pards just won't let you retire, huh, Jim?

From the Lafayette Tickets home page, as of 11:55 PM Sunday:

"Lafayette's allotment of tickets for the Patriot League Championship has SOLD OUT.

If you are a 2014-15 basketball season ticket holder, your seats are still on hold. Contact the ticket office ASAP at 610-330-5471."

Bogus Megapardus

FYI -
"For the men’s championship game, the visiting school is permitted to purchase between 500 and the number representing 33 percent of arena capacity [maximum] from the host school to sell . . . It is the responsibility of the host school to provide these tickets to the visiting school as soon as possible. If tickets are sent overnight, they should be received by 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 10, 2015. All unsold tickets must be returned to the host school at least 24 hours prior to game time or the institution will pay host the value of the tickets that were not returned."
http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schoo...nt/2015PLMBKBtournamentManual.pdf

If I'm reading this correctly, AU gets up to 1/3 of the seats at Kirby but if they don't sell them by 1:00 PM Tuesday, we get them back and they'll be available on-line or at the door.

AU's championship game allotment: "Sections 1, 2 (some), 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19."

Bogus Megapardus

Also FYI - If you try to sneak around by getting tix straight from AU, you're met with this somewhat inconvenient obstacle:
"Ticket availability and seating location will be determined by [your] giving level to the Eagles Club . . . you can contact (202) 885-3104 to give your support."

Not that it means anything unless/until our boys beat American, but Joe Lunardi has the Leopards playing a 16/16 first round (play-in?) game against North Florida.  The winner would face UVa.

UVa ... didn't we beat them in a big game once upon a time?

ESPN bracket prediction has Lafayette playing North Florida in a PIG, with the winner facing Virginia in Charlotte.  The "West" 1, 16, 8, and 9 bracket is in Pittsburgh, and that would be a great landing spot for us as fans could get to the game.

This will be our 4th championship game in 6 years, and Fran's 7th in 20 years. Not too shabby.  Fran's overall record may not look overly impressive, but making it to the conference championship game 35% of the time is very solid.

Also there are 5 'original" D-I schools which have never made the NCAA tournament.  They are Northwestern, William & Mary, St Francis (NY), Army and The Citadel.  William & Mary and St. Francis will be playing in their respective conference championship games so 2 of 5 can break through this year! St. Francis will be playing Robert Morris in the NEC championship.

I still feel like we would deserve a 15 seed if we were to make it, but I guess I'd need to see the field

A team that went 9-9 in the PL probably isn't getting a 15 seed.
Pard4Life

I'd be shocked if American filled up more than two sections. They make the title game more often than not, so traveling to a road site might not be a priority of the fan base. It's not Baltimore or Annapolis.

Given the PL first round history re Lehigh and Bucknell, we could sneak a 15 seed with an impressive win at Kirby
Grandpa Tom

Very Happy   Play in or 15 seed, let's not get ahead of ourselves.  AU is a really good team and probably the hardest team in the League for us to guard.  I was visiting with someone after the Army game about the tournament matchups  and we both agreed we would prefer to not have to face AU.   Well, here we are.  Not to throw cold water on our excitement but we have a very difficult game to play.  LC is going to have to figure out how to defend American's cuts, back doors, and post ups better than we did in both reg. season games or it will be another trip to the title game with nothing to show for it.   Now with that said, we are on a roll and  I am getting the feeling we are a team of destiny.  Just think of all the things that had to fall in place for us to be where we are, so maybe this time we will be cutting the nets down.  GO PARDS!!!!
Pard4Life

Watching Pee Wee beat a backcourt press is enough to give anyone nightmares.  If we can run the floor we will be fine.

Never confident against American.  They seem to have our number.

That said, a look at the bracketology guys gives us

NBC Sports = Play-in vs. St. Francis (NY) for a #16 vs. UVA

CBS SPORTS = Same as NBC Sports

Joe Lunardi (already mentioned) = Play-in vs. North FL for a # 16 vs. UVA

College Sports Madness = #15 vs. Kansas

Team Rankings = #14 with no opponent mentioned
Pard4Life

No Jim Mower to bail us out vs AU.

So far we've beaten teams that historically are troublesome.  Let's keep it rolling!  If I had to name three teams I wouldn't want to face in the PL tourney, any year, it'd be these three... we've beaten two so far!

American should have had a rough year, with almost all of their seniors graduating, but apparently not...

Keys to this game? Unlike football.. no waiting a week!
jonnymo

Can't wait for this game. The resurgence of Bryce Scott has been huge. I don't think the usual substitutions will be as prevalent in this one foul trouble notwithstanding.
Lafalum

AU can move the ball up and down the court. We can not turn the ball over and getting offensive rebounds would be a great plus. I am looking forward to Wed. and a great crowd.
Kpard

FOH is certainly familiar with Coach Carril's offense all the way back to his asst days at Penn. Hopefully he can get us to defend it well! We are definitely playing our best ball right now and Lindner has come of age.
Hope these seniors go out with a bang!
It gonna be a good one.
Beat AU!

A decent article by Tom Housenick in today's Mourning Crawl:

http://www.mcall.com/sports/colle...-column-0310-20150309-column.html

I was not aware that the Pards have only 9 total turnovers in the two postseason games and that Ptasinski shot over 70% in those games.

Joey seemed more active in past two games vs. prior few.  More cuts to the basket, looking to go backdoor, driving when presented the chance.  Not sure if that's just my perception, but when he's (and Bryce) more aggressive to that way it sure opens up the outside game and takes some of that responsibility off Nick.   And, logically, we end up with more FT attempts.   Presumably AU sees that too, so curious to see who plays the better game of personnel and game plan chess on Wednesday.

Been a long time since we have been in this position - hope to see them play like Ehlers, Whitfield, Bieg, and Stefan did last time we had this opportunity.  Suspect you'll see some of them in stands.

Too slow on the ticket buy option - will be yelling at the TV from home.

Driving past the defender who is hell bent on stopping the 3 has opened up those layouts for Scott and Ptasinski. Loosens things up for getting looks at the 3 then.

They used to call Ehlers "the assassin". Lately I have noticed that Lindner has the same kind of look. I'm sure Ted Cole will be there!

It used to crack me up (in a good way, mind you) how often he would wind up on the floor.

Has any season ticket holder received a confirming email re their purchase for this game?  I requested e-print tickets.  No email, credit card not charged, no reflection of the purchase on my online ticket account. Wondering if I should be worried. Folks are swamped in the ticket office, not answering phone. Thanks for any help on this, guys.

Yes, thanks, I went through the ordering process with the secretary, giving her all the info that is already in my account. She seemed rushed.  Still no indication of my purchase. Called on Mon morning, she called back and took my order yesterday afternoon.

American U.'s window to "use or lose" their allotment should be expired by now (assuming I'm reading the rules properly).  I hope it's not a day-of-the-game rush for Pard fans to scoop up what's left of them.

I can see Lehigh dragging their feet on returning unsold tickets for a game at Kirby . . . but American?  Why would they?

EDIT - On second thought I suppose there wouldn't be any unsold seats if it were Lehigh, would there?   Laughing

Awh come on we played them last year and we can schedule them whenever we want... we want Duke!

I have a feeling we will get Nova if we win tmrw.  ESPN has us vs Manhattan but Bobby Mo won tonight.

Move it to Fisher Field!  Football in a baseball stadium.  Basketball in a football stadium... why not?

I'm thinking white oxford button-down shirt, maroon bow-tie and my floppy white paddy cap, with a maroon scarf.  Befitting for a gentleman of my years?

The First Lady is gonna want some ear plugs, I think.  She's a trouper for agreeing to come along for this one.
Steve

American will be a challenging team for us to defend well.  On the perimeter, Schoof, Reed, Gardner and Jones all are threats from 3-point range, and can cut well to the basket.  In the Princeton offense, good 3-point shooters who can move well enough to score on backdoor cuts are particularly difficult to defend, because if you play them tight on the perimeter to stop the 3-point shot, they can beat you on backdoor cuts.  Vasic is quite small for a "center," but he is quick and effective on backdoor cuts, and thus could be difficult for Trist to defend.  It might be a good strategy to have Trist sag off of Vasic on the perimeter and take the chance on him beating us with outside shots.  If Trist tries to stay with Vasic on the perimeter, it will be hard to stop Vasic from getting past him on back cuts, as he was able to do against Colgate and several other recent opponents.  Also, it will be very important for Trist to stay out of foul trouble, which is another reason why we probably don't want him to chase too much on the perimeter.

It will be interesting to see if we play any 2-3 zone against American.  That would take away the backdoor cuts.  However, it could create some other potential problems -- Gardner penetrating into the gaps of the zone, AU's outside shooters finding space against the zone to shoot 3-pointers, and the potential to give up outside rebounds.

On the other hand, our offense poses some challenges to AU's defense.  Trist will have a big size advantage against Vasic or Jones.  If we can get the ball to Dan in good position in the low post, it should be difficult for American to stop him.  If AU collapses against Trist in the 2-3 zone when the ball goes inside, our other 4 starters are capable 3-point shooters who are big threats if left open.  (It helps that Scott has regained his shooting touch over the latter part of the season, and Ptasinski in the past 2 games.)  Also, Lindner has established himself as a significantly better 3-point shooting threat than he was in the 2 games against AU this season.  Hopefully, Hinrichs will bounce back from an off shooting game against Bucknell.  As some have noted, Joey did a very good job driving and cutting to the hoop against Bucknell, and Bryce always has had the ability to score on drives, although against a 2-3 zone, driving to the basket may be less of a factor.

What I really like is how well we have passed the ball in the two playoff games.  Continuing to pass that well tomorrow, while avoiding turnovers, will be especially important in enabling us to find good looks against AU's 2-3 matchup zone.

I'd certainly prefer that we had won one of the 2 regular season games against the Eagles, although I take some comfort from the fact that we had a fairly solid win against them in the game at Kirby late last year.  American goes almost all the way with their starting 5, with Brennan following the pattern of his college coaches Carril and Carmody.  Fran has tightened up our rotation considerably in the playoffs, although Rufer, Boykins and Hoffman should get a chance to contribute off the bench.  (I don't think Musters would fare well trying to play man-to-man D against AU's offense.)  I do respect American's experience as defending champs, and it looks like they may be peaking again at tournament time.  It looks like we're peaking right now as well, so it should be an exciting game.  Hopefully, tomorrow night will be "Leopard Time."
Lafalum

Just consolidating your thoughts, Dan can't get into foul trouble!! Maybe we can get Vlasic in trouble!!
Bogus Megapardus

Great post by Steve.  I worry if we try a 2-3 zone if Trist gets in foul trouble.  Klinewski is OK on man but I'm not sure he has the feel for O'Hanlon's zone quite yet.

I'm not so concerned with Hinrichs offensively - Bucknell focused on him so Linder and Joey took up the slack with both scoring inside.  A Hobson's choice there.

From cbssports.com --

Patriot League Championship: American at Lafayette (-3.5); 7:30 ET, CBSSN: But first, there's the small matter of the Patriot final, which features the No. 6 seed American take on the No. 4 seed Lafayette. The winner of this will become the lowest-seeeded team in league history to win the title and earn a Tournament bid. Here's how unlikely it is that these two teams would be here: in the first 24 years of the Patriot League, only twice had there been a semifinal upset. This game will be in Lafayette's home gym, giving them a pretty distinct advantage. Should be a fun one, regardless.
