PRESEASON 2015 - Preview, Summer Camp

It's time... preseason is upon us!  The first game is one month away.

Tough OCC games vs. W&M, Delaware, Princeton, Wagner, and Harvard.

Bucknell is a rising force.  Fordham looks reloaded.

We have a solid secondary, but questions remain at OL.  Can they finally get it done early and often?

Edit:  that's supposed to be 3-8!  3rd-10... we see that a lot around here  Laughing

I had the 8th in mind as well, but kids just arriving today.
Bogus Megapardus

If we win one we shouldn't (Princeton) and lose one we shouldn't (Bucknell or Colgate) I'll go with 6-5 this season.

The five losses:

W&M
Delaware
Fordham
Harvard
Bucknell/Colgate

The six wins:

Princeton
Wagner
Georgetown
Holy Cross
Bucknell/Colgate
Lehigh
BillS

I was going to predict 10-1 but I'll go with 11-0 maybe I'm being overly optimistic  Laughing

P4L, no reaction to LU receiving 8 votes in FCS coaches poll?  Must have seen something in the Bronx.  Smile

What he said.

Yes, P4L, even with a predicted win over the New Jersey Tabbies.  And Wagner will not be a walk over.

Best possible is 8-3.  Worst nightmare is 3-8.

Delaware will be very young, and will have a new QB. They didn't get any new transfer help at QB. They've started a transfer QB for the past 13 seasons.
Bogus Megapardus

I stand corrected in my above post.  Massey has the Filthy Fountain of Football Failure ranked higher than Penn as well.

But no matter . . . they won't beat Penn.  Not a chance.  Only we can beat Penn.
bethlehempard

Hens fans are generally miserable right now, questioning the wisdom of the transfer strategy, of their place in the hierarchy and just about everything.

According to Massey, our greatest chance of winning is vs. Princeton. That's either a very bad sign....or maybe a very good sign. (Obviously it's one or the other!)

Franks Tanks

Somewhere between 4-7 and 6-5.

The D will be very solid, but I fear the offense (especially the line) will continue to struggle.  We've had 5 years of average to below average line play.  Kids have come and gone, some started for 3 or 4 years and improved a great deal and made all league teams, but the line as a whole was still average.

If Drew Reed can revert back to his 2013 form and play nearly perfect games we will be better than 6-5, but we can't count on that.

This is not the UD team we faced in the playoffs, not by a long shot.  That team wouldn't have lost to Sacred Heart.  Leopards can win this one!

Forgot about Lonardo's knee. Some day a team rule - no pickup bball games...

Difficult to compare QBs who worked with different O-Lines.  Last year Bart Starr might have looked average behind our OL.  Rob was a great competitor (Colgate) who could get into that short drop rhythm.  Would love to see Drew perform to his level this year.

Frank's comments re the frosh OL is the stuff that only Paul gives us.

Pards' last win over Delaware was in 1960; the series has 25 total games.  Can you imagine the hand wringing in Newark were we to win this one?  It isn't going to happen IMO, but it's a fascinating thought.

The Pards last played Delaware in a regular season game in 1972, a 27-0 loss in Newark.  The last time the Hens visited Easton was in 1971, a 49-0 shellacking.  In a minor footnote to this series, in the 1963 61-0 blowout in Easton, Veep Joe Biden was a backup Delaware junior linebacker and played in the game.

Nova played Lehigh and Fordham relatively recently.  A bit surprised as this game popped up sort of out of nowhere however.  Perhaps we are replacing Penn on Nova's schedule?
Pard4Life

Good point Tanks, that would be the weekend those two would play.
carney2

Penn's OOC games this year are @ Lehigh, @ 'nova, and Fordham.  I'd love to know what happened to us.  A series with something like 90 games in the bank doesn't just disappear.  Somebody got pi$$ed off.
carney2

Not much buzz this year.  In fact, the lowest that I remember for some time.  Low expectations, or too much beach time? Or, just tired of all the freakin' losing?
carney2

The Frankosaurus has consulted the College’s Department of Mystic Studies, a minor in the Department of Gender Bender and Left Handed Studies, and was given the following chances of winning this season’s games:

William & Mary – 25%.  Higher if Mary gets playing time.
@ Delaware – 30+%
Princeton - 70%.  The gods are distracted by the Greek mess.
@ Wagner – 45%.  Not one to be taken for granted.
Fordham – 40%  Not the Rams of 2013.
@ Georgetown - 70%  But not a gimme.
Harvard – 40%  Need to show up for a change.
@ Holy Cross - 60%  Is Pujals the new (unbeatable) Dominic Randolph for the Pards?
Bucknell – 50%
Colgate – 60%
@ Lehigh – 70% if Shafnisky starts for the Squawks; less if Coen has switched QBs.

I'm very optimistic about this season! We return the best defensive team with the most experience in a long time. Offensively we return 2 outstanding Quaterbacks, young talented running backs and wide receivers and potentially the most athletic offensive line we've ever had, add to that very talented freshman skill players. I see no reason why there shouldn't be optimism about this upcoming season!!! GoPards!!!
Andy

Under a brutal sun, the kids put out a good effort this morning. Spirits were high, particularly on the defensive side. Smalley and Phil P were on the sidelines in shorts, didn't appear to be anything serious. Labudev DNP either. Come to think of it, I didn't see #85 either.  One of our first commitments last year, Fragapane, looks to have been moved from DE to DT.  Cepeda moving around fine and hopefully will take a redshirt for last season.   Sparks is at DE.
DB Clay Rush caught my eye.

Fly was correct, Raysor is participating. Still, I feel for Stan, Staudle and Grieser both DNP leaving fr at both guards.

QBs moving well. DR threw an INT but also threw a beautiful TD pass to Rocco who made a sweet grab up high. Crawford looks like he's ready for a big year. The 3 frosh WR all impress. Granjean caught everything thrown his way, Joey runs a nice route and is really quick and CJ made several grabs, one behind him on his hip.  I dont remember seeing Mrazek.  Gralish and the new guy both put kickoffs to the corner, inside the 5.
Bogus Megapardus

FYI - Joey Chenoweth was listed at 5'9"/159 lbs. in his Hudl/Nike profiles.  The Lafayette roster now lists him at 5"11"/180 lbs.  That's a pretty substantial difference.

C.J. Amill went from 175 lbs. to 180 lbs. but shrank an inch, from 5'10" to 5'9".  Hmmm . . .

From Hudl to the Lafayette roster, Chris Granjean remained 5'8" and put on a modest seven pounds, from 168 lbs. to 175 lbs.
Bogus Megapardus

Thanks for the update and info, Andy.  I caught just a glimpse of Clay Rush in coverage in the clip from the first day of freshman practice on GoLeopards.com.  He's got really good technique and he's athletic.  Rush was a WR in high school who played both ways.  Coach Link might be hard pressed not to give him some minutes at some point this season.

Good to hear that there's an actual competition at K.  Lord knows we need it.

Also Andy, who occupied the other Guard spot this morning (if you know)?  Zataveski the Younger?

Couple of laughs this morning from Bogie.

AGS had a recent thread:

Re: How Does Your School View Your Fan Forum/Web Site

None of our guys answered but I would think "As a constant source of irritation" about right.  We know some past administrators hated what they couldn't control.  Judging by those on campus who now shun me, we know they pay attention,  I'm bunched in with the negative nellies.  Hey, that's fine.  Of course the AD has taken a beating, mainly from an insider who seems to have left the board.
NE Leopard

Appears that all of the freshman lineman (Grieser, Kern and Zataveski) are making good strides even though there is much to learn with Stan's blocking schemes. On the skills side so far Chenoweth, Amill and Rush may see some quality playing time.
Andy

Info, fly and NE, is appreciated.

I guess Coach Fein's comment the other day " we know you can run fast, now you have to run routes" was directed at all 3.  With 17 and maybe even 2 (not sure) out yesterday, the young guys were running from wideout, not just slot.

DiPietro and Wadsworth show good athleticism at TE.  Wads had a few drops early last year. Was catching the ball yesterday. Maybe just a confidence thing.
flyfisher

After learning more about budgets, resources and the priorities and goals of the College I think I understand more than I did initially.  Best to enjoy the ride and leave the people with authority to fight for what they believe is important. It's all part of a master plan. I think I understand how The College wants to be positioned. How it is achieved is up to others. Personally I can see a way that LC achieves greatness again on the fields. It's a great place. Enjoy the ride.

I felt pretty good about the latest recruiting class all along. The coaches recruited speed at RB and Wideout/slot. And they can play special teams. Would never try to compare any of them to Ross S but we got some guys that that can make people miss and leave people. We recruited kickers. We signed 2 nice DE's, one may end up being great. We signed DB's. We got interior d-linemen but most importantly we got 3 promising looking o-linemen. We could have used 5. These three need to do well. Not sure about the QB position because I have not watched film and even then I can't accurately judge. In the end, for all their physical attributes, their success will come down to work ethic and heart. But overall I was more positive on this class than most. I like the recruiting effort from the coaches

True, we keep score, there are winners and losers. However I am not going to let that ruin my day.

We are entering another football season. Who knows how many of these we all have left. Im not going to let the outcome ruin my day. I enjoy the whole game atmosphere, the days leading up to the game, the travel, the conversations and banter, the game itself, the players and their families, and most importantly the effort the coaches and players put in each day.

We all prefer to win but Im not going to let that determine my outlook. Football season is some of the best times of our lives, and definitely in the lives of the kids. I plan on enjoying it. I hope you do also.

God bless, guys, and enjoy the ride. We are proud that the kids chose LC.

For an alum/fan the enjoyment is tied much more closely to winning.  Luckily for us our team has four championships in 11 years.  Participant based athletics is not what D-1 sports (and the millions the college is investing) is about.

I find joy, also, in being able to scroll up and take another look at "Mary" and the fact that ELB has returned to the board!!!

I don't think anyone should expect the school to endorse or even mention this site. First, the College does not control the message. No way they endorse a site where they have no control. Second, this site has some pretty harsh words for the College at times. In its urgent format they are not going to give this site any credibility.

Most big football programs recognize Scout, Rivals, and other such sites. But those sites are actual media outlets that actually put out journalism on the school and sports program. While there is some helpful information here, this site does not produce its own articles and would be hard pressed to call itself a media site.

Doesn't mean this site is not useful at times or is not a supporter of LC programs. Just would not expect any support from the College in its current format.

That is disappointing but ideally has changed. Based on the few posters I've met or talked to, there are no more-devoted Lafayette fans. Where else is there serious discussion of any 170-410 team, in any sport or at any level?
One thing that does bother me: I have never seen an explanation of why the college needs an expensive midtown office space, and why the only publicity (that I've seen) was from the real estate company.
Perhaps I missed a statement on this.

I would hope that the college never takes over this site. Heck, we never would have heard of Carney, now wait, maybe the college should take over. OK, I'm over it. Most of the coaches know who I am as does Sports Information. So what, I'm still going to criticize when I think they have done something stupid or are not doing what is necessary to be successful.

During the last administration there was a concerted effort to discover who post here. I am told there were hours and resources spent!! It was a paranoid bunch.

i agree that everyone here is a strong, dedicated fan. But that isn't the issue. Some here can be as critical as they choose. However for most of us i feel safe in saying that we dont have all the facts. There are two sides to everything. I can understand why there would be frustration on their end having to read semi-anomymous comments on a blog.

While I am new LC fan and do not have the years of frustration or pride that some of you do, the more i learn about where sports fit in at LC, the more i can see the point of view of the administration. Not that i agree with everything but i see their position better than i did initially.

I think most of us would like to see every student athlete have the best experience they can have and get a good education. I have seen nothing that says that is not possible. A good athletic experience can be a good educational experience. Its when we seem to try to cripple ourselves that make it frustrating eg. the absurd go it alone posture on scholarships, the refusal to raise operating expenditures for the last years while the number of
of administrators and their compensation has exploded.
flyfisher

Lafalum, I understand your point. Obviously there are bigger forces here. It's the direction of the college. I will leave it to others to fight those battles. Back to football.

That is true for sure.  When they did the Road Show a few years back "to determine the qualities necessary for the new president", an alum noted that they go to the forum for comic relief. The panel jumped up and said "who are these people? what are their names?"  When it was pointed out that they should be more concerned with what was being said than who was saying it, the panel was speechless.  Clearly, the BoT and others, or paid LC staff, read the posts.   I'll bet Danny Boy and Artie still troll the board and can't believe how their Ivory Tower was disrespected.  Danny may have been the smartest guy in the room (in his opinion), but he was also the most naïve. Mr. Green  Since Alison took over and the critical posts have decreased, the admin probably has stopped [most of]  their investigative reporting.

My understanding is there will be even less contact this camp than in the past as well as during the week in season simply to cut down on the possibility of injuries. That was based on comments from the staff late last year. Things could have changed.

Based on yesterday's camp photos it appears that the home stands have been reopened after the resurfacing.  Would be nice for Sat's scrimmage. Can anyone confirm?

Closer look shows still fenced/taped off.

Can you fill us in?  What is the resurfacing?

I don't know exactly what they are doing but I do know a bunch of bolts securing the chair backs and bench seats have come out of the concrete. Also some spawing issues.

And to think they left those pre-renovation splinter-and-split bleachers in place for at least 50 years, pretty much untouched.  You couldn't fart on one without breaking clean through.  We're moving up in the world.

But hey - look on the bright size.  At least they're not doing it Georgetown-style.  Odd that they have to interrupt camp to do this, though.

The guys were rolling on a concrete colored material presumably premixed with sand but also at times throwing sand down onto the rolled surface.  I was at the first practice with pads but can't recall the day (yikes), at that time the workers had one or two sections left ( at the BVH end).  The fact that they're keeping this fabulous facility in tip-top shape is awesome.  My friend, our board member Refrider, had prewarned me, so I just headed to the visitor stands.  For the morning session, of course, the sun is in the eyes.

Guys, some of you local boys need to be getting to practice for some updates. Its football season, retired or not, some of you gotta help us out and get some camp notes. Im checking this blog 4 times a day looking for any crumbs.

As to Preseason Central, the couple of video interviews were nice but we should have pictures every day. How hard is it to download some digital pictures? Maybe interview a coach every other day.

Sorry if i seem a little pushy. the best time of the year is coming up.

Point very well taken, fly.  Given that I'm most decidedly not retired (and nowhere near it) I should be able to make it over to camp this weekend.  I'll bring my (old but sturdy) DSLR camera with the zoom lens.  But I caution - I'm hardly a football expert (I played a very little bit in H.S. but that's about it) so I'm not exactly a reliable reporter about what's going on (lacrosse and track were my sports).

I agree that Preseason Central ought to post more vids and pics but the ones they've put up so far really are pretty good.  Beats the heck out of any other PL team.

80-play scrimmage on Saturday. With officials.

Nick Zataveski was hurt today. He walked off, but his left arm or shoulder is not right (no pun intended).

Froth Tanner Kern had reps with the 1s at center. I don't think he's the last.

Grayish is kicking every bit as well as, and maybe better than, Bissell.

The team has been hit hard by an intestinal flu that puts kid down for days.

No Roberts, Smalley or Bryant at today's practice.

Guys were working on the grandstand on a scorching day. I'm glad I'm not one of them.

Hey, sideliner, Matt sat out the session I attended, too, and yet practiced the next day; is it possible Coach is giving some of the key players breaks on these scorching hot days? I know, with good reason, he is mindful of injuries. I suppose more than likely though, blisters or a sore hamsting.

Smalley, Roberts, Bryant - nice piece of an all- league D.

Bogie, thanks for the feedback. I agree the site is better than anyone else but not sure what that says. Just because the other schools suck doesn't make us good. But I do appreciate what we get.

Sideliner, thanks for those crumbs. Much appreciated. Had not heard about the stomach flu.

I can't wait any longer. Bought two airline tickets for my oldest son and I and we are flying in Friday night , watching a scrimmage, and flying home Saturday night to watch Tiger Woods. Hopefully he makes the cut.

Have a great trip, fly.  Perhaps I will see you there.  I'm going to focus on OL play as I'm sure a lot of folks will.

Stomach flu is so common on campuses in the fall.  Lets hope our guys get through it before the rest of the students arrive and before W&M.  It's not pleasant but it happens.  The training staff will just have to double up on the Gatorade (or do we use Powerade now?  I keep forgetting).

Lehigh's Shafnisky is getting rave reviews for his performance in preseason camp.  (Of course, he's a local kid and gets some extra press.)  On the other hand, we're hearing nothing about Reed/Searfoss/Davis.  Are we in trouble here, or have we merely stumbled into a media black hole?

You're right, but it's a QB-driven League, and without one, we're toast.

What did you think of the QB play yesterday? Was the offensive line as bad as you think?

QB is the least of our worries imo. Blake and Reed are proven and word is Sunshine is the best athlete of all 3.   Did anyone attend the scrimmage?

If you're asking me, sorry, but I wasn't there.  Had to help a friend who has ALS.  Am eager to read reports from anyone who was in attendance.

Also hungry for observations of yesterday's scrimmage!
Andy

I put up a post last night and took it down - wasnt comfortable with it. Maybe a condensed version:

Scrimmages ain't what they used to be.  This was almost totally underclassmen. Is this being done around the league?

Word was the # of players nursing injuries is in the low 20s, many are carry over type stuff.

The OL yesterday was L-R - Miller, Staudle, Kern, K. Zat, Cam S. So, 2 fr and a sr who hasnt played a meaningful down.

Hoffman, a once promising OG, is apparently done, concussion symptoms. Preseason all-PL, Nick Zat, is once again out with injury. OL depth is questionable at best. Need about 4 in the recruiting class. How 'bout 6?

So, besides the OL, TEs (DiPietro & Wadsworth), and QB, the only other projected starter that I saw participate was Parham. That's it. (JR caught one punt, and Crawford was out there, too)

Starting DL was Bosch, Anderson, Cepeda ( great to have him back!), and Ramsey (?, or maybe Sparks/Strand, not sure). Labudev dressed but of course DNP.

Bissell did all the kicking, await status on Gralish. Bissell has a stong leg but was ofer 3 yesterday on FGs. Does close count?

Reed looked fine, found the open receiver and arm looked strong. Blake threw an INT in the flat, but we know he can be productive. At this point I'm not as excited about Sunshine as some here are. Has a really loong delivery. I hope he proves me wrong.

Wadsworth caught a slew of passes at TE and I'm excited about him. No Quinn Smith, Angus Evans, fr, I believe hasd a nice grab, arms extended, on an out pattern just before the boundary. Looks skinny at 250, athletic.

At RB, Meriwether started and eventually had a redzone burst up the middle for a TD. Looked really quick but needs space, IMO.

Tyler West pretty much stole the show. Very quick and instinctively finds daylight. A keeper here. His signing was quiet (not a big twitter guy apparently) and I believe early on, which would explain why maybe we weren't in the hunt for some of the other backs we saw sign around the league.

CJ had a good day at WR and KR. Made a grab or two, gets separation from defender. Joey and C. Granjean DNP. Other WRs were poetsch and Goss. Poetzsch keeps making plays, sat out last year, I believe.

Ramsey at DE can really move, this kid will be a monster player in this league.

Fr DB Kaiser Butler also a standout performance. An INT and some nice tackling.

Home stands closed.
RichH

From what little I can gather, seems underclassmen are getting a lot of reps. Certainly they are at LU. Course, that may just be because of our dire need for better players Smile
SIDELINER

Paul Reinhard no longer has a blog on Morning Call website, which hurts exposure. He has been curtailed because Lehigh writer does so many other things and can't give the time to LU as Reinhard can give as a freelancer. That accounts for the "black hole" someone mentioned. Hopefully this improve as the season gets closer.

I really believe coach to T wants to look a lot at the players who will be backing up the 2015 starters. And he also wants a healthy first unit for September 6. Take a look at the short video that was produced at the scrimmage. That hit that Ramsey makes is big time. Amill KO return to the house is encouraging, too, as companion to #24.

These guys are working their butts off  and they finally have a day off today. Lots of young guys contributing. BIG. This is going to be a fun team to watch.
Pard4Life

Maybe so Sideliner but it is going to be a grim season if the OL can't get it together. Experience is concerning.

I can see us losing games 24-7 simply because our defense is on the field for 40 minutes and 75 plays while we struggle to cross the 50.
