Presidents Meeting

Back in October, the Presidents had a retreat where they discussed various issues. If I recall correctly, they said there would be a meeting in December to develope a strategy for League growth. Has anyone heard when the meeting is or whats on the agenda?

I have heard there is a meeting in Jan not Dec and it will include a decission to standardize the AI calculation in the PL.

Lafalum, can you explain what you mean when you say "standardize the AI calculation"? I thought the calculation was two standard deviations below the enrolled class. I realize that it would be a different minumum at each school. Are you saying that there will be a league wide minimum? If so, it would have to be a hard number. How would it be calculated?

Also, I thought you mentioned in another post that there would be no disclosure of the information. Why the secrecy? It seems like transparency would be the best enforcement tool. Without it, it makes you wonder what they have to hide.

To Standardize the calculation means that each school would consider the inputs to their number the same way. At the moment each school weights various factors differently to measure the mean incoming student, SAT scores, class rank, AP courses, and then there are adjustments for diversity etc.....it is at that point you establish your mean index number and calculate your 2 std deviations. Now, logically if you just used mean SAT scores your class of incoming recruits should not fall 2 std deviation below the mean but how do you judge that against Holy Cross who no longer requires SAT scores on applications or how do you judge the class rank from an American University recruit from a private Catholic School in Chile against a public school in Northampton County??

That's why when these coaches say my AI is higher the other AI it really has no meaning. The Ivy League has estalished bands which allow a mix of students rather than hard floors. They can let in several lower qualified students if they balance it with higher qualified students in a higher band. I'm hoping we go to that system!!

I agree the AI's should be public. If these schools can't or won't abide by their own guidelines the fresh air of exposure will make them fall in line. The member schools (including our own) are loathe to make the numbers public.  Our last administration hated it when it was proven that our brethren were getting better students with scholarships than we were without....

Paraphrasing Dickens:  "Our last administration were a ass."
