Proposed Rule Changes

A number of changes to the women's basketball rules will be voted on in a June 8th conference call. Proposed is a change to four 10 minute quarters. Bonus free throws (1 & 1s) would change to 2 shots on the 5th foul in each quarter. Time outs will be 4 per game (3 -  30s & 1 - 60) with a carry over of 2 to the second half. Media timeouts would be 1 per quarter on first foul under 5 minutes.

From what I can figure out, here are the changes:
game will be 4 10 minute quarters
5 fouls per quarter,  6+ = 2 shots
media TOs on first stoppage under 5 minutes
defenders can hand check with a forearm or open hand with a bent elbow

Also they adopted the NBA rule that after late-game timeouts following opposition baskets or defensive rebounds, the ball will be moved to the offensive end to inbound it.         This will create more exciting endings in certain cases - but I view it as contrived and wish they hadn't adopted it.

Also note that the rule about checking with forearm or open hand only applies to guarding post players who have their back to the basket.  They have gone back and forth on the use of the forearm over the years.

Sounds like high school?! Confused

Or like all international competitions.   Or like all pro leagues.

Essentially, now NCAAM are one of the only, if not the only levels that does not play the 4Qs. I think this is a great move for women’s basketball to go out ahead of the men and do something they’re not doing. It’ll speed up the game and make it more exciting for fans!

Now that the NCAA has changed their rules, the PL has made changes to the women's playoffs. Both semifinal games will be played at the highest remaining seeds court on March 11 with the championship game played the following day.

Could someone clarify - the new hand check rule applies to defending a player in the post without the ball, correct?

No.  It applies to guarding a post player with the ball.  Can't use the arm to push the player away from the basket - but can use it to maintain position.

Thanks.  A push is still a push and the blocking fouls remain the same?

Bogie, I assume by blocking fouls "remain the same" you mean "called seemingly at random depending on which coach is 'owed' a makeup call"?
