Providence

Home and season opener vs Providence at Rappolt 3:30 PM Saturday.

Providence went 3-12 last year; it was one of the few teams worse than the Pards.  We finished 50 (out of 61) in the LaxPower rankings.  Providence finished at 55.  It is rumored that Providence does award some scholarship money in lax but is by no means fully funded.

Providence arguably is the weakest team on the Lafayette schedule this season.  We should win at home.  A loss, even a narrow loss, does nod bode well for the future of this season.

Again, we're a very young team but that's not an excuse.  This opening game should be all about coaching and preparedness.  We'll see.

BTW the team scrimmaged against St. John's over the weekend.  An anecdotal report on the 10-9 St. John's win (from LaxPower) is a follows:

"Lafayette was a little sloppy on passes and clears. Their FO guys did great. Couple of nice feeds to guys cutting down the middle for some easy scores. #9 played well as did #14. #35 goalie had a good day. They played a few different guys at that spot."

Predicted high of 51 degrees so not a bad day for lacrosse.  These first three games are indeed the Pards' best opportunities for wins although they lost to Providence last year and were tied at the half against Wagner.  Providence returns a lot of players from last year so this game could be a real test.  I expect it to be a close game and Lafayette will need to clean up what seems to be some sloppy play in the pre-season to have a chance.  It is encouraging to hear that faceoffs went well against St. John's as number and time of possessions are so crucial.  Good luck!  I'm very eager to hear how things go.

I'm going to try to make it to the game Saturday so I'll give a report if I can.

Does anybody know if there will be All-Access broadcasts of any of the games this season?

Lax is better in person anyhow.

The "positional preview" is up:

It looks as if Jake Hyatt will start in goal which is probably the big news coming out of this.  Also, John Bolton will switch to LSM and Mike Galione is now a Middie.  The FOGOs are Anthony Zawadzki, whom I know nothing about (apparently he took faceoffs in high school) and Jake O’Brien who is a freshman.

Bunch of freshmen on attack.  Very young group here.

Hyatt is an interesting story.   Golf was his spring sport in high school but he was recruited over to lax in the winter of his senior year when his H.S. (Ridgefield CT) had a great team but no goalie.   Hyatt had not played lax in a few years and I'm not even sure he was a goalie when he did play.   In any event he played well and helped Ridgefield win its league title - which in CT is usually significantly harder to do than winning a state title.

Galione was a H.S. teammate of Hyatt's.   Ridgefield had so much talent that Galione was the weakest of their three starting forwards.   The other two were Matt White, named top attackman in the nation by IL and now a key player for Virginia, and Colin Scott, who had a very good freshman year for Denver.

A very nice day to open the lacrosse season at Rappolt.  I was just checking the Providence site - they have a ton of guys on their roster.

Anyhow - let's go Pards.  Show us what you can do.
