Ralph Williard leaves HC for Louisville

RW announce today he is leaving HC to join his buddy Pitino in Louisville.

This could create some interesting chatter regarding current recruits, current players, a new coach and possibly a new system.

This is kind of late to change jobs?????  HC will have to elevate one of their assistants at this point.

I don't see HC elevating one of their assistants. There's plenty of time to recruit a new coach. No doubt the proverbial "national search" is aleady underway. Willard had a good relationship with AD Reagan and I'm sure he made some recommendations.

What will be interesting, is seeing if they hire a defensive oriented coach in the same mold as Willard or if they look for someone more offensively oriented. Watching HC on the offensive end was like watching paint dry.

Yes, there is no way they hire one of the assistants imo.    Major college assistants Sean Kearney (ND) and Tom Herrion (Pitt) are two names being mentioned fwiw.   Kearney was supposedly a finalist for the Bucknell job, although I have no official confirmation of that.

The word here in the Valley is that Tom Brennan, former Vermont coach and now with ESPN has been approached by HC to see if he is interested. I'm sure he's just one of many.

That would be an interesting hire, but I wonder if HC really would want to start over with a 60-year old coach.     I also wonder if Brennan would want to leave Vermont at this point in his life.

Amen. And then crow about how great their defense was when they were actually limiting the other team's possessions by using 30 seconds of the shot clock every time on offense!

Actually HC's defense was quite good for a number of years - even when adjusted for time of possession.   However, they were not as good the past two years.

Here is where HC ranked nationally in points allowed per possession (which automatically adjusts for the pace of play) - both in absolute terms and also adjusted for the ability of their opponents:

Year:  Absolute/Adjusted

2004:  3rd / 80th
2005:  1st / 30th
2006:  7th / 48th
2007:  5th / 46th
2008:  83rd / 163rd
2009:  30th /  118th
