Ross is a Tiger Cat; 2016 PL tryouts

Ross Scheuerman has signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. Back at home.

Updated with details and a pronunciation guide

A review of Steelers' signees:

http://www.steelersdepot.com/2016...-class-review-rb-ross-scheuerman/

"The 6’, 204-pound back suffered an injury a couple of weeks into training camp, and as a result was waived injured, but at the time of the injury, he was very much in the discussion to at least make the initial 53-man roster for the first two weeks, along with Josh Harris and Cameron Stingily."
SixtyEighter

Ross has some competition- Although he has a criminal charge in his background the Eagles drafted a guy from the big 12 whose hometown is Wilmington , DE named Smallwood who was a good player in that league. He was charged in a murder case with witness intimidation but the charge was dismissed by the DA.He was drafted to be a backup. He is the first RB drafted since Bryce Brown.
Franks Tanks

Were any 2016 PL grads picked up as free agents?

Mayweather from Fordham appears to have a try out with the Chiefs, but didn't notice anyone else picked up.

Smalley had a work out with the Eagles, but haven't heard anything regarding Matt.
bethlehempard

Khalif Raymond, WR, Holy Cross, has an agreement with the Broncos. Whether he signed or is getting a tryout, don't know.
Also Kyle Nolan, QB, Georgetown, with the Ravens.
These may just be tryouts.
bethlehempard

The NY Daily News says the Jets have offered Smalley a tryout.

Wasn't Frank quoted that G-men wanted Matt as a RB?  Terrific talent, just tweeted so many negative LC comments, he turned me off.  I believe Mr. R even called him out on it.

Probably a bad place to be right now with all the changes in management, coaching, QB,  etc. Not sure anyone in the Eagle organization knows what direction they are heading in.

I think he has a better chance with a team that has a plan, philosophy, etc. in place and is looking for a backup player who can fill in multiple positions.

This Pard's drive is unstoppable and the CFL season is starting. Great news. Game one, June 11. Thanks Ross this is just what Pard fans need now. Remarkable, four teams have recognized his versatile gifts in about 18 months. Now we just have to get the tv coordinates or charter a flight to Hamilton. Go Pards!!!!

Competition there is tough: from the above

Michael Ford had two stints with the club last year and is back again, while newcomers Ross Scheuerman out of Lafayette, and Da’Rel Scott, who tore it up at Maryland, have impressive resumes.

Two-years ago Scheuerman had the sixth highest all-purpose yardage total in the entire U.S. college system

I've eaten at all the new restaurants in Atown, Hortons and Crust are the worse. Was there on a Friday at lunchtime only 3 of us in the place.
bethlehempard

Outside of a few visits to the Farmers' Market each year, I hardly ever go to Allentown. That and I go to a few high school games there. Dieruff's AD is doing his best, but facilities, participation and fan support are terrible in most sports. Allen may be slightly better off but again, no fans. It's sad for the kids.
The PPL Center is a good venue, but what went on around it is a big problem.

Being of Canadian extraction myself, I can report with confidence that most Canadians dislike Tim Hortons as well (except for the poutine - if you've never had it, don't ask!)

Ross is #36
Bogus Megapardus

My family's ancestral home in Canada is about 20 minutes from Hamilton.  There are plenty of folks of the Megapardus clan in the area.  So this game is of some mild interest to me even aside from Ross Scheuerman's participation.

Remember, only three downs, and a 110 yard field.  Laughing
bethlehempard

The motion allowed on offense is always interesting to see.
The CFL's brief foray south of the border was a bold though failed move, now a footnote to pro ball history.
A footnote, like my Pottsville Maroons 1925 World Champions t-shirt. That short-lived team had Lafayette connections.
Bogus Megapardus

Hmm . . . game moves really fast but there are a bunch of penalties.

"Breaker Boys" is a good book about -- aboot? -- the Maroons. I have ties in the Coal Regions and the anger about the lost title was strong for decades.
I haven't seen RS, No. 36, yet.

Weren't the Maroons accused of having an ineligible player or something, after the fact?  Fielding Yost redux?
Bogus Megapardus

Nice throw to #2
Bogus Megapardus

Looks like #32 will be the featured tailback
Bogus Megapardus

Ross is making special teams tackles????
Bogus Megapardus

BS call on that fumble
Bogus Megapardus

This game would be much better with Laubach and Joseph in the booth.
bethlehempard

The Maroons played an exhibition game against former Notre Dame players in another team's territory. This somehow led to them giving up the title,
Though even titles at this time were somewhat informal.
At the same time it was a big deal for a pro team to beat a team of college players including the Four Horsemen. Charlie Berry kicked the game-winning field goal.
The Maroons beat the Chicago Cardinals 21-7 earlier but the Cardinals were named champions. They've been mostly lousy ever since.
The Maroons moved to Boston I think a couple years later and disappeared.
Joe Marhefka was a Maroon but later I think. (Edited)
On the back of the T-shirt are the opponents:
Colwyn-Darby 48-0
Buffalo Bisons 28-0
Providence Steam Rollers 0-6
Canton Bulldogs 28-0
Providence 34-0
Columbus Tigers 20-0
Akron Pros 21-0
Frankfort Yellow Jackets 0-20
Rochester Jeffersons 14-6
Cleveland Bulldogs 24-6
Green Bay Packers - hey - 31-0
Frankfort 49-0
Chicago Cardinals 21-7
Notre Dame All-Stars 9-7

Go Maroons!
Bogus Megapardus

Fake punt.  Frankosaurus take note.

The Yellow-Jackets?
bethlehempard

Right. And it's Frankford not Frankfort as I have it in the list. That's the team they infringed upon.
bethlehempard

Henry Burris, QB for Temple about 20 years ago, is with Ottawa now. The TiCats have a small traveling squad because of playing recently. Many starters aren't available.
Bogus Megapardus

bethlehempard wrote:

Infringed, meaning they played in the wrong market or something?
bethlehempard

Yes it was Franford's territory. Philadelphia.
Schedules were casual then as the Maroons wanted a big-money game with Green Bay after the season to settle things but the league gave the Cardinals the title.
No matter what, I see it as Pottsville was the champ for a week or so.
That town needs something.

The level of competition appears to be somewhere between the PL and the MAC.

Maine/UNH/W&M/Nova etc. could compete with these guys.  NDSU would beat them.
Bogus Megapardus

They use a tee on extra points.

Ross playing ST coverage again.
Bogus Megapardus

Cats QB is Jeff Matthews from Cornell, in case nobody noticed.  I just informed the First Lady, whose interest now is piqued.
Bogus Megapardus

The First Lady (late of Cornell U.), interest now piqued, just informed me that the many members of my family in Ontario should be referred to as "Megapardi."

I thanked her nicely.
Bogus Megapardus

I am inspired to take a trip to Canadian Tire - pretty much the Walmart of Canada (but cheaper and of much lower quality).  Or to Marché Bonichoix.  That's Canuck for Wawa.
bethlehempard

Ottawa's punter looks like a fan they pulled out of a bar. A heavy hitter. Maybe he won a contest.
Well tomorrow starts early ... Good luck TiCats.
You remind me of the retail strip outside of Charlottetown on PEI. Just like a U.S. strip bit with different names. The rest of the island except for a small tourist-trap area near Cavendish is beautiful.

Thanks, bpard!

I will try to continue this unusual June game thread through to completion.
Bogus Megapardus

How many challenges to these teams get?  Seems like a lot.
Bogus Megapardus

Ross now in at RB in the second half and he looks like quintessential Ross.  Speed, great balance and big chunks of yards.

Want to see him catch a screen from Matthews.
Bogus Megapardus

Ross is running the ball VERY well.
Bogus Megapardus

Ross played the entire second half and looked very good.  Needs to work on run blocking, though.  105 yards on 13 carries with 1 TD.  Led all rushers on either team.  Also 2 catches for 14 yards.

http://www.ottawaredblacks.com/ga...-vs-hamilton-tiger-cats/#boxscore

BTW, Brock Jensen from NDSU played QB for Ottawa.  Another familiar name.
Bogus Megapardus

CFL roster cut-down day is Sunday June 19.  Ross would seem to be a lock after last night's performance but I have no idea how they evaluate their RBs.

CFL teams get to carry only 46 on the regular season roster which probably means only two RBs. I have to wonder if Ross' lack of special teams tackling and blocking experience in college will be a liability.

The Tiger-Cats head coach is former Cornell HC Kent Austin.  The offensive coordinator and the RB coach have strictly CFL background.  The special teams coordinator played for Maine and coaches at Dartmouth and Penn.
SixtyEighter

It's very  encouraging that he out played former Giants RB D'arel Scott by such a wide margin.Scott has 2 year's NFL experience but really played poorly when given the chance.
bethlehempard

He's on the practice squad:

Bogus Megapardus

bethlehempard wrote:

Then it would appear that the Tiger-Cats are keeping three RBs on the regular season roster, none of whom are named Ross Scheuerman (C.J. Gable, Da'Rel Scott, Mercer Timmis).

That doesn't square with what I saw the other night, but obviously there are other factors.
SixtyEighter

One factor - J'arel Scott stinks.Obviously "office politics" at work.
bethlehempard

http://m.thespec.com/sports-story...ere-s-how-the-ticats-will-line-up

The above says Ross will back up Gable. The roster indicates Ross is on the practice squad. So we will see. The league has odd rules about how many non-Canadians can play.  Hamilton has suffered a lot of RB injuries over the past couple years.
That looks like a reporter error. The depth chart says otherwise:

Thanks for those game notes, Bpard.

Also, maybe the reporter for the Hamilton Spectator saw the same performance as we did last week and simply assumed (justifiably) that Ross would be the principal backup RB.  Cool
Bogus Megapardus

Hmmm . . .

Here's the Tiger Cats' depth chart for Thursday's regular season opener against Toronto.  It lists Ross Scheuerman as the second RB and reports him to be on the active roster:

http://assets.ticats.ca.s3.amazon...-Chart-Roster-06-23-16-at-TOR.pdf

But the roster on the team website still lists Ross as a member of the practice squad:

http://ticats.ca/roster/

Fans here would be all over the LC sports info people for such an incongruity, would they not?  Rolling Eyes
Bogus Megapardus

Thursday's 7:30 Hamilton v Toronto game will be streamed life on TSN, the Canadian Sports Network, but you have to be a Canadian cable subscriber to log in.

http://www.tsn.ca/tv#/TSN1

Nevertheless, if there's going to be a live stream, *somebody* no doubt will host a stream of it *somewhere* on the internet.  It should not be too difficult to find.  Cool

EDIT: As suspected, it wasn't too hard to find.  PM me if you want a link.
Bogus Megapardus

Looking more carefully at that depth chart roster, if you scroll down to the second page, the column on the right shows that RB Anthony Woodson is on the "1 Game Injured List" and both RB Da'Rel Scott and RB Mercer Tinnis are on the "6 Game Injured List."

That appears to leave Ross and CJ Gable as the only healthy running backs for Hamilton to start the season.  (I see that Ross in not listed on the "Practice Roster" on the top right, either.)

I don't speak Canadian (remember North Dallas 40) but it sure looks like Ross will be on the playing squad.
The CFL has a salary cap of C$5.1 million with some QBs making as much as C$400,000. The average salary is around C$80,000 so quite a few make less. That average is probably less than an NFL practice squad guy makes.
The minimum is C$52,000 (I'm looking at multiple sources for this stuff) which is about US$40,000.

Ah, Canada.  For what it's worth . . . A Canadian will pay a total of aboot $8,000 in income taxes on a $50,000 income.  An American will pay about $11,500 in income taxes on $50,000 income.  But Canadians pay another 13% in VAT on everything they buy (except groceries and medicines).

I've lived in Canada and owned property there.  I even speak Québécois French (sort of).  All I can say is, it's really different.  You can do more with less but you expect less, I suppose.  Its kind of like a cross between Alabama and northern Michigan, but without all the culture and refinement.  There are only two seasons - Winter, and Fourth of July.  And don't get caught in the Canadian health care system unless you have a wad of American $100 bills to peel off as vigorish for McGill-trained doctors (if you can find them).  Been there, done that.  Canada is the only place in the world where people can be obsequiously polite and monumentally rude at the same time - and mean it earnestly.

And they truly, deeply hate Americans.  Heck, half of my extended family still lives there, and they'd agree with me.  They stay only because of our own became Governor General (or whatever they call it) way back when and they're afraid of offending someone.  Eh?

BTW, a full 10 loonies for a pint of Molson (or even Coors Light for that matter) at Tom Hortons Field. 14 loonies (or 7 toonies) for tallboy at Toronto's new BMO Field. By comparison it's $8.50 for the same at the Linc in Philly and $8.75 at Met Life for the Giants.

Sombody should complain.

Thought Ross did a nice job on contain responsibility KOs and Punt. Played it smartly. Toward end of game Ross had had enough with the holding and slammed a guy to the ground. If you're gonna wrestle him, you'd better bring your A game.

Would have liked to see them use Ross as a receiver, swing pass, use his speed.

Looks as if Ross now is the featured RB for the Tiger-Cats.  Over 100 yards in the 3rd quarter.  His pass blocking looks excellent as well.

I still don't understand the CFL pre-snap motion rules, though.

His yards-per-carry is comparable to the injured USC player he's replacing and the catches, Lafayette fans knew he could do that.
