Scholarships

In an email magazine "From the Hill" I got an article that featured our athletics program. It says we now give scholarship in M/W basketball M/W soccer, softball, baseball, field hockey, M/W lacrosse and volleyball. Originally volleyball was not part of the scholarship picture. Does anyone know if that is a recent add and how many have they been allocated??

My info is 12 in mens's basketball 13 in women's bball, 57 in football ( plus one to be raised by friends of football to get them over the limit to get a paid BCS game) 12 in women's lacrosse, 3 in men's lacrosse 12 in women's soccer, 12 in men's soccer, 12 in field hockey 2 in softball and 2 in baseball. 86 men's scholar ships and 51 women. Did the college raise the amount of women now to match the men therefore the increase or is the planned increase come as football adds. 137 was the equivalency number to get scholarships approved at Lafayette?

What happens if a scholarship or a partial scholarship ( in the case of non counter sports) is not used or if  a player leaves school. I know what the league allows but what does Lafayette do??

Also given the mix are we in some sort of Title IX violation or are my numbers wrong. women soccer, field hockey and lacrosse are maxed out per NCAA rules.

Pre football schollies,Lafayette complied with Title IX by budegeting sufficient funds for women's sport. The trick was that most of that money was never spent. Accounting ledgerdemain. Now ,the measure is actual expenditures and proportionality with the student body ratio of male and female.
Answer I guess is to delve into the actual numbers at Lafayette.

Let's assume 52/48 Male to Female Ratio and the BOT authorized 140 scholarship that would mean 67 female scholarships as opposed to 51 equivalencies I am aware of.

Remember the BOT authorized a level of scholarship equivalencies that did not exceed the existing amount of equivalencies spent on athletic need based aid. Even if the number was raised to accommodate the football numbers the number of female scholarships would have to be raised significantly in sports like softball and volleyball, the other sports that were identified and not already maxed per NCAA limits.

At that ratio, there would seem to be an issue. Not in the mood to redo the research I did in Year 1 of schollies. Assume AD has a plan to balance aid in compliance with Title IX. If I recall correctly, all aid counts. So its not just athletic aid.

Didn't it change to 13 a few years ago?   According to a lot of reports, LC has had 13 players on athletic scholarships for basketball over the past few years.

I know there was 13 for the women but you could be right, I have not seen recent numbers, and it was confusing with some players leaving the program. If it is 13 for the men it does not help our ratio m/w/.

13 MEns
15Women

that is NCAA max - but I don't think any PL teams give out that many on the women's side.

I believe LU has one non schollie.

I could be wrong, but I doubt we have fencing scholarships.  In any event fencing doesn't have "divisions" (i.e., DI, DII, DIII).  Everybody who sponsors varsity fencing competes together.  It's not unusual to see a school such a Brandeis, Haverford, MIT or Stevens in the rankings.  Last season Columbia won the NCAA title and was ranked #1 IIRC.

We could, however, give women's fencing 5 scholarships (the men can have 4.5 scholarships).

Not being facetious,equestrian?
Is that an NCAA sport?

Yes, though it is categorized as an "emerging sport."  The NCAA permits 15 scholarships for equestrian.  Pards have a very good equestrian team, but it's at club level.

Lafalum... I think it's one to be raised by Friends of Football per class.

Bowling has proven to be a good Title IX sport.  Very cheap and can give out some scholarships.   The NEC and MEAC both have it as an official sport.

"3 in men's lacrosse"

Pathetic.

It is because of Title IX and football taking 58 male slots. As I said above there is an imbalance now any additional male scholarships makes it even worse. Footbal is required to raise money for one additional scholarship and may even have to raise money for additional woman's scholarship. Any men's sport will have to do the same. The only other solution is to drop a men's sport which has happened all over the country. It is the reason we don't have a wrestling team.

Let's mix it up and get some women on the men's football team Very Happy

Frank Fedorjaka at Bucknell would celebrate for a week if they ever told him he had three.    That would be pathetic, but a major upgrade.

Men's lax

I'm pretty close to the LC program, and it's my understanding they will have at least one more scholarship, if not more, in the upcoming consecutive years.

Insofar as Bucknell is concerned, they already have a significant advantage in regards to recruiting very good players.  Financial aid at Bucknell is awarded far earlier to prospective recruits when compared to Lafayette.   Bucknell makes their prospective commitment of awards in the junior year of high school recruits.  Lafayette, on the other hand, unfortunately waits until senior year to make their awards to prospective recruits.  That is wrong, cumbersome, and handcuffs our coaching staff.  Our administration should change that policy immediately for academically and athletically qualified recruits in their junior year.

The Bucknell head coach retains a tangible and significant recruiting advantage, notwithstanding our "edge" in the number of scholarships.  And that is a fact...

Yes, that is a recruiting edge - but having no scholarships certainly puts BU behind in who they can recruit.   It's not easy to find lax players who qualify for need-based aid.   They can compete with LC and HC, but are falling behind the fully-funded programs of Colgate, Lehigh, and Boston U - never mind Loyola.

A general item from Forbes with a note about Lafayette and Pomona "beloved programs but not as nationally prominent"

It looks like details about Lafayette got chopped out of the story.
