School Newspaper Athletic Awards

Nothing more represents where Lafayette's athletic department is. Female Athlete... track and field...... yes... set individual Lafayette records but what about Amanda Magadan who made the US team and participated in  the Junior Pan Am games and won a silver medal.
Male athlete a swimmer is certainly a contender as he MAY qualify for the Olympic trials
A softball player rookie of the year (who??)
A team that is not even a varsity sport (crew)
And a photo of the year from a freshman basketball player who averaged 3 points a game and 11 minutes a game. The play was a dunk in a game we lost!!

Sigh.....!

I agree with some of the comments above; but, I do like that softball choice.   (I'm assuming it was the shortstop.)
Totally stabilized that team defensively.  Hit well.  Even in defeat, the team was more competitive because of her.
New pitcher coming in next year.  Might be a team to watch.

Emma N. on women's lax worthy of consideration.

That appears to be a big miss.  Is there an online link to the article?

Aside from a standout star in FH, there isn't a whole lot for students to get excited about. What other bright spots did they miss?

That is my point!! There is not a lot to get excited abut and these students are  missing the bonding and school pride that comes with a successful team... any team!! In the end it has its effect on admissions when you attract students who don't care!! We end up with a student body who is more excited about playing frisbee on the quad. This year we laud a non recognized sport like crew ( I wish it were an intercollegiate sport) next year maybe the ski team or rugby team. Eventually the pinheads come out, why are we supporting teams the students don't care about!
I can remember Rothkopf saying directly to me," No one goes to football games its dying so why not drop it, and I am the guy to do it!!"

Oh that makes sense. I misread and thought you were criticizing the students / newspaper for their choices in the awards and general level of support of athletics.

Now that you mention club sports though, the rugby team did exceptionally well in the past few years. Would exceptional club sports in crew, rugby, and hockey really be such a bad thing? Is the athletic department even responsible for club sports, or is that in another part of Campus Life? According to the College's website, club sports falls under Recreation Services, not the Athletic Department.

You are correct and I think club sports are fine but it is not intercollegiate athletics. Yes the athletic department has nothing to do with club or intramural sports. Several years ago the crew team made a big pitch to become a varsity sport. Rothkopf killed it!

The beat goes on..... the Charles Albert nominees and class of 1913 athletic awards nominees were announced. I don't believe there is a scholarship player in the bunch ( based on allocation 4 years ago of scholarships only to MW basketball, fh and men's soccer.) Our coaches are terrible at recruiting or is there something else at work here. If we are recruiting the best of the best these award should be dominated by scholarship athletes. ( by the way why should these awards to be given just to seniors?? I know the Albert award says senior but.....) Why wasn't Smalley nominated..good enough to be signed by the Giants but not EVEN nominated...please!! There is a disconnect here to my mind!! It says a lot about our standards and what we value and it isn't wins and excellence on the field!!

Is anyone asking this question,,,, if we spend 8 million a year on athletic merit aid why aren't we getting the best student athletes!!?? I think our AD should be asking that question!!

not sure what you're reading ... Smalley and Bryce Scott are nominees for the Albert award (http://www.goleopards.com/genrel/051316aaa.html) ... predominantly non-scholarship athletes though

I could have sworn they were not on the original release but thanks for the correction
