Signing Day 2017

Finally a pic facing the home stands!

Looking forward to a great LC production tomorrow!

http://www.goleopards.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/013117aag.html

bethlehempard

Next fall's QB may well be one of the freshmen signing tomorrow.
Lafayette's goal is to contend for and win titles.
If Garrett can lift this program back into contention, and that is a heavy lift, then 50 alumni can put up $500 each for the base of a home playoff bid.
Andy

Positions will be clarified today:

Always excited for signing day. Whether it was with a pit in my stomach and both hands in the fax machine making it earns it keep one day a year or sitting here with the GoLeopards coverage in the background at work.

Coach Garrett didn't have a lot of time to make too many changes to the class, but I am excited to at least hear is take on the guys coming in and some of his plan.

Btw - love that shot facing the home stands. Must be from a drone, looks so good.

HOLY CRAP!  Austin Pyne looks just like his dad!

Good luck kid, I hope you are as tough as your dad was!

So happy he's with us!

When will LC fix their video stream???  Horrible, cant follow the interview...
PardDad71

Awful.   Why do it if you cant do it right?

What has changed? It didn't used to be this bad.

blip - flip - garble - jump back - skip - tease - frustrate - ef it

M. Panto left.....so many comments missed with all the blips, skips, ...Just try to watch the Cole Northrup portion, ridiculous. The first few minutes of Coach Nudelberg is an example of what we're complaining about.  Important stuff re numbers that I would love to have heard.  Mike's closing comments, important, undecipherable. A shame.

No mention of Kerstetter.  Never had twitter confirmation of the newspaper statements of his commitment.

JJ Younger went through his HS signing day ceremony. Don't know what the story is there.

No mention of the transfer.

Gary did say there are guys we will be able to talk about in the future.

Love the comments on our OL guys. JG seems legitimately impressed.  Nice group!
Andy

Admissions guy completely undecipherable. What a shame.

Class B+ - A-.

Broadcast F.
seenalot

Would have been better off not broadcasting anything vs. that.

After years of doing it right and being really proud of the production that was unmitigated crap.  An understatement to say not the way to welcome in a new coaching staff or new enrollees.  If I were JC, Dennis, Mick et al, I'd would be both furious and embarrassed.   Same goes for Bruce and Alison.

That deserves a huge apology to every kid, coach and fan who supports LC. And in world outside academia someone would be looking for a new gig by this afternoon.

And yeah, a ton of missing names vs. what we had expected.
Andy

Right on, seenalot!  The measly couple hundred I was gonna send in tribute to the staff's effort is staying here. Too frustrated.  Such great people - Gary, Mike, JG, Nudle, the admin guy - with so much passion and info, wasted.

I heard various numbers 17 then I believe 19.  I hope JJ and Douglas are yet to come. W/out them the athleticism and speed in the group is largely diminished.

I'm such a hopeless schmuck of a fan, I'll give them another shot tonight with Coach JG during the bball game.
Bogus Megapardus

I turned it off after 10 minutes.  Completely unwatchable.  I have to wonder if anyone on the production end actually monitors the feed as it goes live.

The replay doesn't work, either.
seenalot

And what's equally maddening is they are too naďve to take the crappy replay down until they get it cleaned up or redone.

The world is not viewed solely through the eye of Twitter folks.  So while that aspect was done reasonably well, the way most of the world over 22 years old sees you (read those who donate) looks awful and amateurish.
Andy

My son feeling our pain, emailed me:

Couldn’t really follow anything Lafayette did today – cant find a list of signings anywhere and the video feed was a disaster.  Kept flipping backwars then forwards.  So I would hear the same sentence 3 times then it would fly forward and I had no idea what was going on.  Saved myself a tumor and turned it off.  Sounded like they were talking about OLineman though….thats good I guess.

Last year they posted a picture and info on every kid they signed on instagram…was hoping they would do the same this year////

I forwarded the bio section, apparently he liked the instagram effort last year.

How many LC video feeds have to end in frustration before they do something? We apparently employ  a "Video Production Manager."
Andy

OK, guys. Just went back to replay for third time (desk-top) and when I again adjusted the quality from auto to 270p it held. While the picture quality is poor the sound is audible.  I'm gonna give it a another try.
seenalot

...how many folks do you think would be that patient.  You have an interested viewer for a very limited time and then they move on.  It doesn't work right you lost them.

True, bro.  And I don't know how to make the adjustment on the IPad which I use for the bball feed cabled to the big screen.  Which still might not be an adequate fix cause the picture quality is poor.

Not if you're doing the buying Rolling Eyes....BTW this is your first contribution to the recruiting thread. Very weak....
Marooner

From my experience today and trying to catch a few games online this year, it looks like a bandwidth and/or Internet speed issue (pardon my terminology if I'm not using it right...) on their end.

Not a good excuse for not fixing an ongoing problem, but I don't think it's as simple as a Sports Info staffer hitting the wrong button or plugging in the wrong cord. Somebody with the power (and budget) to do so needs to boost the Internet capabilities around campus to support these broadcasts.
Bogus Megapardus

The feed is set up for mobile devices, I guess. Maybe desktop/laptop browsers aren't caching it properly. Whatever it is, the LC production people had better look into it and provide instructions to the rest of us about how to view the material and how to set browsers, etc. It makes no sense to do this unless they can do it (reasonably) well.
PardDad71

Tried watching live on my phone, it was even worse.

Colgate's signing day special on PLN is on now (began at 5:30) and it's coming through just fine. Lafayette has some splainin' to do . . .
Andy

Now after adjusting my desktop to 240p, I can actually hear (forget about seeing the videos clearly however).

Coach Nudelberg, after describing the "spectacular" effort by the new staff to add 7 guys in 2 "incredible recruiting weekends," (great job!) said with a grin:

"...hoping for a couple more and a couple things to happen as we progress here going on..."  Interesting!

Also Gary said:

"...so with 17 already committed, we know there will probably be a couple more..."   Presumably JJ and Lavandis.

The signing day broadcast is here, broken down into separate videos for each player:

This is the quality I assume we were supposed to get in the first place. You can even beef up the quality to HD 60fps.
jonnymo

What a mess of a feed. So frustrating. Not indicative of the quality of our beloved school.  How do we make this better?  So much work goes in to this with great on air talent and it's not watchable.  I could only watch for 5 minutes (replay)  In the corporate world, this would be addressed quickly yet our awful streams continue.
adcs2

FYI, the problems with the streams were acknowledged at least twice during PLN broadcast of WBB game tonight. Once by Gary and then again by Mike Joseph at halftime. They are aware and working to figure out the problem.
We have great broadcast team, good camera crews but the product stinks because of choppy stream. Kind of like we have great facilities but the teams still stink. We can't get out of our own way.
Andy

Beating a dead horse to death, I know, but men's game AT Army, Ipad, adapter, cable to TV, absolutely no problem. Such a pleasure compared to our home game streams.

Very upsetting and the worst part for me was that it skipped over my sons portion of the interview totally.   Not what you want for you child's big day

Very sorry for the players and parents.  But as bogie posted, the interview is now available broken down by player, video and audio. Yeah!!!

Maybe a new thread tomorrow to actually discuss the signings. Today was just too frustrating.

No need to apologize to the kids there now. They understand the landscape. They see the total lack of commitment from the college. It's a shame really. Great school, good infrastructure, great alumni group both in financial support and attendance. It's been a long time since I have seen something so good yet so undervalued. I think the new coach will help but he can't do it by himself.

Some of you won't like this comment but I'm still not sure the college leadership is committed to Scholarship sports. Look at all the facilities. Alumni built those. Think where we would be in athletics without about five families.

That's true for most of the College, not just athletics. The difference is, athletics has a bizarre us versus the College attitude.

I do understand your comment and I am trying to be understanding of the outright vitriol regarding the stream, but you're right Fly I don't like it.

The college has finally made a move with the staff to make the team better. The college has finally acknowledged our shortcomings on the field and are taking steps to correct or at least uncover the issues.

We have all seen years of lackluster support and we have all been very frustrated. But this is hilarious to me. For years we have been saying that we have the best media product in the PL and possibly FCS. We have great talent, amazing coverage, and ESPN level production value evidenced by our regular selection to appear on ESPN3 and several comments made by ESPN3 producers. Then there is a bad stream on an off-season event and you all want to pull the plug, take away your donations, fire the AD and President for making a mockery of our great school. The talent was still there, the commitment to the event was still there. There was a technical glitch.

Is it a shame? Should they have fixed the issue before the end of the broadcast? Yes.

Did they acknowledge the streaming difficulties and apologize? Is this a rare occurrence and not indicative of the overall product? Also yes.

How about we focus on the new staff, the new players, and the new direction of the program while the department at least appears to want to make a direction change itself.

This was not a one time glitch and has occurred at least all winter and at times during the fall. There has been plenty of time to fix it but it is only getting worse. Several people have called and there seems to be no urgency to get it fixed.

Is this a rare occurrence and not indicative of the overall product

Have you watched a home MBB or WBB game lately?  This is NOT a rare occurrence and this board has been filled with threads noting the difference between watching a home basketball game vs. a road one for several weeks now.

I was encouraged that the LSN team referenced it twice during the WBB game, which by the way was started and then stopped early in the second quarter.

I got some message that said "this event has been ended by the host".  I was able to resume the stream by reselecting it, but there are obviously problems going on.

The feed is choppy and jumps around with all kinds of buffering, the audio levels are all over the map (100 decibels for commercials and Joseph, 50 decibels for Gary and 25 for John), the audio speeds sometimes get wonky causing the talent to sound like they are on amphetamines. None of this occurs on road broadcasts.

No, I don't watch any of the basketball feeds, and if this has been going on for a few weeks that is unfortunate.

All I am saying is that the ability for this board to 1. look for things to complain about and 2. work itself into a full lather in 60 seconds flat is funny to me.

It's been going on since last year.  It happens during FH and lax games.

The technology to do this is off-the-rack these days. Anybody with a camera can do a live IP broadcast.  The only intangible is to have access to a server with bandwidth flexible enough to expand on demand - and we're not talking about more than a few thousand viewers.

Unless somebody at LC really is asleep at the switch, the only thing I can think of is that Lafayette's ISP (which I assume is RCN) doesn't have the most modern servers and can't give Lafayette the dedicated on-demand bandwidth it needs to sustain the broadcasts. If that's the case, then the only solution is to use C-band satellite, I suppose.

I'm incredulous to your reaction. Big build up on the website to one of the biggest sports days of the year. Many of us look forward to the day and to LC's coverage. Then, like so many other events, the broadcast was AGAIN a failure. Extremely frustrating! Wake up, 10!  LC was a leader in this stuff, now other schools have followed suit w/out problems. Main point though, we had turned the page as of 11pm last night. You resurrected it.

And to Fly, where do you think Lehigh would be without 1 family?  Not sure I understand re-raising the admin support issue today? Let the study play out, we have 15 scholarships. Progress, why are you stirring the pot, today?

That happens when information is lacking. There aren't any stupid people on this board.

The college's support for athletics has never been stronger, and I say that as someone who attended my first Lafayette game in the 1960s.
The results are perplexing. Staggering even but there is hope.
Perhaps it's time for a Godfather-style meeting of the Five Families before we have to "go to the mattresses."
I've been as pessimistic as (almost) anyone but the last few years have brought progress though so far it's a war without victories and glory, only casualties.
That will -- it must -- change.

I looked forward to the signing day coverage for weeks. It was so frustrating I stopped trying. I'm planning try to watch the youtube breakdown videos tonight. Bandwidth problem solved externally but so disappointing.

Coach JG's top 2 on his "following" list: JJ Younger and Lavandis Douglas. He's looking out for them. Good news ahead, I trust.

I tried to watch the signing day stream live and had to give up. Then at home at night I tried again but even the archive was NG and unwatchable.  How could the stream be archived in unwatchable condition? That is mind blowing. My home computer and internet are state of the art for 2016 to provide maximum "reception" for sports and movies so I know it's not my equipment.Maybe something better will be avaialble this year but what I have was about the best you could get last year.

Who would you list as the five families??
PardDad71

House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryan, House Bartatheon, House Tyrell

Football is coming
bethlehempard

"Who would you list as the five families?"

I saw an earlier reference to Five Families and thought of the Gambino, Colombo, Bonanno, Genovese and Lucchese families.

Lafayette has many generous donors but when it comes to families, one always comes to mind first.

On the football field I think we are going to have quite a QB competition. The only guy on the fall roster to have thrown a collegiate pass will be Davis (one, at Yankee Stadium).

fly: I completely agree with you.  It has to do with lack of understanding of athletics, overemphasis on safe spaces and politically correct BS, small college myopia, liberal arts fantasies and especially the unbelievable arrogance of many educators.  Too many Trustees simply don't care about athletics - as I have said many times.

Opinions vary.
So do personal agendas.

My only interest is seeing this sports program cease being the joke of the league.

Others here have more personal issues at stake, and that is understandable.

Scholarships for sports were unimaginable in my day.

Now with scholarships, Lafayette needs coaches who know how to allocate them. The alumni and college have taken a stand, now it's time for coaches who can deliver competitive teams.

Leopard10,  forgot to comment that I am very pleased with the latest moves by the administration in regard to the coaching situation. And I have said multiple times that I think Garrett is a wonderful hire. In fact I don't know that they could have made a better hire. And they did it quickly as well. I don't not know much about the assistants he has hired.

I have had the same concerns for two years. You played the game, you know. You get one shot at college ball. You just wish all channels would have been fully committed to winning. People here can say, well you got a good degree. That's true. But these guys are football players, not your average college student. Their college experience is more than just academics. When most of the players make great sacrifices and give 100% to give their all to the program, you wish the suits in the ivory tower would do the same. You know the sacrifices they make, not just the social life, the downtime, the trips but you ever sacrifice at some level with your grades.

Going forward I am personally happy for Lafayette and the kids left behind. I believe Garrett himself will make a difference and change some of the culture. There are parts of the culture that Garrett alone can change if they let him and support him. Hopefully he gets the support Frank was unable to muster( that part was not Frank's fault).

Many of the boys realize they leave with a good degree and are grateful for the opportunity as well as the friendships they made. At the same time, many just wished for more for the program. None of these guys committed to LC for the academics, though they are good. My son leaves with the engineering degree he dreamed of 4 years ago.  Of the 8 kids that started in football and engineering, he will probably be the only one to make it in 4 years. And for that he is very grateful. I know many others feel the same way. I can't speak for everyone, only a few.

I could not copy your earlier post due to something not working on my iPad. I would have explained more but I was at lunch and short on time and. rushed it. Sorry about that. Wasn't meant to come across as upset. That message has been pretty consistent.

I don't know anything about the recruits but I couldn't feel better about the head coach hire. I really think it was a home run hire. I think Garrett will bring a consistency to winning as well as some championships along the way.  Have always felt LC could be great. If anyone deserves it, it's the alumni base who are tremendously supportive.

Just saw your comment. I was responding to Seenalot's comment. I had some surgery and have not visited the site in a couple of weeks. I realized yesterday was something going Day so I decided to see how we did. Yes, I am disappointed about the broadcast because I wanted it to be great for those new kids coming in. But in the overall scheme it doesn't really matter. And this area has usually been a strength of LC.  These kids have a chance at a new start, a new beginning. Garrett can change a lot of it but not everything. You're right, maybe the study comes up with something to help the program. But the frustration runs deep. I really hope Byerly and the board commit 100% to winning on a regular basis.

This is NOT a rare occurrence and this board has been filled with threads noting the difference between watching a home basketball game vs. a road one for several weeks now.

No, I don't watch any of the basketball feeds, and if this has been going on for a few weeks that is unfortunate.

All I am saying is that the ability for this board to 1. look for things to complain about and 2. work itself into a full lather in 60 seconds flat is funny to me.

Our kids and parents deserved better.

Your post was about the failed stream?  Sorry i missed that.  I really dont want to be part of continuing this stuff on this thread. I fully support the new staff and all the players who work hard to improve and win.

I hear you ed and of course I've felt the pain. But for football this is a new era, I'm very optimistic. Didn't think a thread on signings was the proper place. But to each their own.

I believe these guys will win at least one PL title before they leave. Go get email guys! Can't wait for spring ball!

Agreed!! I am so charged about our future!

Back to the football action: Here are links to Paul Reinhard's coverage in the paper and in his blog.

Reading Reinhard made me realize that the total weight of the OL recruiting class is three-quarters of a ton.Shocked

However, any calculation of the OL's actual cumulative mass (i.e., its resistance to acceleration independent of gravitation force) will have to await the start of the season.Cool

Throwweight is important. Accuracy is more important.
Tomorrow is the last day of the Lafayette show at the Grolier. If I drag myself out of the Strand Rooftop Bar (the hotel is now not the Strand but some kind of Marriott in the making) I'm going to see it.
Scratch that. The Morgan has its three-Martini lunch also at night and Its a bargain. I wish I could post pictures. The guitar/cello duo just cranked up Deep Purple. Smoke on the Water. Really! Unplugged.

Go Garrett! Finally there is newness and hope!
Thank you Frank. You won and you helped keep this program going.

Still the change is like shedding fetters. It was time!
