Signing Day

They seem to be streaming the list on GoLeopards, but so far no press release or actual list that I can find.  Frank ducked the first question on his Q&A.  Bogie asked him if he saw any recruiting needs rearing up in that NDSU opener.  Frank more or less just reviewed the game and completely avoided the link to recruiting - which was the question.
carney2

It's all Bogie all the time in the chat with Frank.  Great questions, Mr. Bogus.  Some answers; some duck and weave.  In the answer category, Frank says that he has 6 RBs in house and that was not a recruiting priority.  That count would seem to include Patrick Mputu, and a later question indicates that he is indeed still in the mix.
Bogus Megapardus

My question about number of equivalencies is still pending.
carney2

Some statistics, in case you're interested:

27 recruits

By position:

Offense = 15:
OL = 6
WR = 2
QB = 2
FB = 2
TE = 2
K/P = 1

Defense = 12:

LB = 5
DB = 4

Geographically:
PA = 10

MD = 1
NC = 1
TX = 1
WV = 1

Not an efficient process for releasing information! First ? by Bill from Philly got new name: Ryan Gralish described as new K/P. Doing quick research: competitions show him as K not P but has stats for P last year average 33 yards with several games in the 20's. Will study YouTubes but '10 film shows only PATs and KOs. ESPN and Kohl's have him as K only. More soon.

On the chat Frank says he was number 83 in the country at his position.
carney2

I know we've had discussions about size in the past, and I think most of us believe that size is only one factor in judging a lineman, but these guys are huge!

The 6 OL recruits average - AVERAGE - 306!

The 3 DL recruits average 275, so, despite what he says, Frank is apparently tired of being pushed around up front.

There's really no such number. It very much depends on which competitions the kid wants to enter; the entries I've found show him as K not P. Kohl's had him in the 60's; I think ESPN gave him a score of 71. But this is a score, not a rank. The issue here is that we have a rising sophomore K but not P, and our P graduates next year. Barring injuries we're OK for next year, but after that...?

Right on!   We have 3 starting DL coming back over 270lbs. We need pass rush!

Actually, some of the recruiting services do give position ranks.  You may question their reliability but not their existence.  I have no idea where Frank got his number.  He didn't say.

I'm just reporting, not disputing.  It is, however, worth repeating that if they were big AND athletic, they'd be headed further up the food chain.  I'm not in his head, but my guess is that Frank is taking the position

You can't coach big.  We'll take a shot and see what we can make of these kids.

We need 57 equivalencies to play Rutgers.  Frank would have answered, "I'm focused on this year's opponents" were the equivalencies not on the horizon.

Missing the point: these are based on stats from combines, so they are very arbitrary. And more importantly, it looks like this kid is only a K and that leaves us with a potential gap year at P. I know the priorities were elsewhere -- they always are. I just don't want to hear moaning and gnashing teeth later...

Don't need no stinkin' equivalencies.  Scholarships will be a fact in 4 months.  One of our number has reported that he heard the number will be 60.  IF all is correctly reported, problem solved - and soon.

Do you or anyone else think that the eventual scholarships at LC helped us land some of these kids?  This, PLUS our facilities?  I see Lehigh, HC, and Colgate mentioned as recruiting all of these kids and we won every battle.

Edge we won the battle for these kids.  The ones we lost will be on the other teams' sites.   Smile   It DOES seem like we did well and I think it's, as always, a function of adequate funding.

I could listen to John Loose talk football all day long.

Thinks Blake can have 10 yr career if healthy!

Some very interesting comments about the kids coming in.
Bogus Megapardus

Coach Loose comes across as knowledgeable and articulate.  Not that the other PL coordinators are not, but Coach Loose's style and demeanor really must be a plus on the recruiting trail.

Imagine the parents he must contend with, who have outrageous expectations for their "superstar" kids.  And just imagine the talent that holds out for Syracuse, UConn or Pitt, only to get passed by not only by those schools, but then by the PL as well becasue of numbers.  Kids end up at an anonymous DII school somewhere.

We need to get focused here as long as this is a point of discussion.  No one on this board knows what is going to happen, but IF THE RUMORS ARE CORRECT,

Patriot League football scholarships will be announced in June of this year

and

Lafayette will opt for a more or less full complement of 60 (and I will believe that only when and if it happens).

From there you have to imagine the rest, but I think you can take this to the bank:

The 60 or whatever will be phased in at 25% (15 in our little scenario) per year.  These will be awarded to transfers and incoming freshmen.  Upperclassmen will continue with the financial aid arrangement that they initially signed until graduation.  It is almost impossible to conceive of a situation where football scholarships will be awarded - or awardable - to upperclassmen on a merit or any other basis.  If anything, I would think that the imminence of scholarships would be a negative because, if they thought it through, these kids would conclude that they will be competing against scholarship kids for playing time in 3 of their 4 years.

As for having a recruiting advantage over our Patriot League competitors, everyone - EVERYONE - is getting them in June.  Or they're not.

Surprised to hear C Loose say Moralle (last to commit) was "#1 safety on the board."   Great group at DB!  Could Snyder play corner??

Coach sounded very defensive about the Keller situation and explained it well.  Prob allegations of tampering- wrong.  Also worked up a bit over loss of 5th DL, "had an offer out there."  We know who that was.  Coach came close to saying more than he wanted to, wish he had!  Smile

And a RB lost to PSU!  "RAIDED" he said, right?  Oh, come to think of it, all-state RB Colin Bryan whom we cited in the recruiting thread, mentioned on social media that he was accepted to PSU.  Maybe the kid in question.

Coach called the class a "slam dunk."  Love it!   Thanks to our staff for their hard work and great "hosting" job by our kids.  GO PARDS!

I'm guessing but we can dissect it.

Guess #1 - at eleven o'clock they had received 27 faxes, show must go on, so they go with what they have.  Recall last year we knew and worried that Maxim was missing. Sure enough late fax.

The original position breakdown showed 2 WR and 3  DL, it became 4 & 4.  I believe the 3 additions were Crawford, Smith and Sanders.  Supporting the late fax theory is the fact that both Sanders and Smith had announced their verbals previously.  We knew from the Times Leader that we were persuing Crawford.  Further,  Coach described him as the greatest thing since Barry Sanders (and I'm very happy about that) so I doubt he was an afterthought.

Theory #2 - they originally had 29 but the 2 DL whom it was previously reported had committed - Grant Jamg and Adam Richard - reneged this morning and the staff split up their money and made some phone calls.  I'm not buying it because the 3 additions are too well regarded and, as we know, previously reported committed.  I rest my case, circumstantial as it is.

Jamgochian to Lehigh. The Haverford School erred in reporting that lineman Grant Jamgochian was committing to Lafayette. The 6-3, 250-pounder has committed to Lehigh.///

Doesnt resolve the issue IMO, as the school may have "erred" because the kid switched last minute after an offer from the vengeful lehighs.  Just kidding, who knows....

Talks about needing another big class this year to bring #s up.  will only have 60 for sp ball, lowest ever.  Also now will have about 90 in camp down from 100 during championship years.

Raves again about Crawford, will use him all over,  says he is one of 3 "with impact potential."  Unfortunately they didnt ask him who the others were.  Dam!   (Coach Loose suggested Dodd and Brockman)

ALSO - signed 30 but "INVOLVED WITH A FEW OTHER SITUATIONS INVOLVING THE ACADEMIES." !
Andy

From Paul Reinhard today:

WHEN YOU CAME IN THIS MORNING DID YOU KNOW YOU HAD 30 SOLID? –Oh, yeah, I knew. I knew last night we had 30, and there’s another one coming. We already signed another guy while this was going on; his paperwork will be here tomorrow. So there’s another one, and there are still a few more we’re dealing with but we’re competing against the academies and there are a couple of more commits that could be possible. In the next week or so, there could be an additional one or two./////

The 3rd update of the Boston Herald's commit list continues to include DE Paul Richard of BC High.

Also, Frank says the # of equivalencies will  "move forward, but it’s not going to take the jump I need. That's just the way it is."

 Interesting as in previous comments Coach said he was more or less happy (satisfied?) with his aid allotment.

What do you suppose "do it a little differently" might mean? Is the dawning of a new era imminent? Very interesting, indeed.

Either they are growing bigger or, I think we made an intentional effort to get some bigger kids. Especially at linebacker and defensive back. Some of our really good backers in the past few years were listed at 6-0 or smaller (and were probably smaller than the listings), but, this group is taller and meatier. Hopefully they can run, because they are going to face all the dink and dunk offenses that is the PL.
Let's hope this year we stay healthy and can get and keep some guys on the field!

NLF, there were apparently a couple in question so I'd guess LC will wait till all are resolved one way or another rather than making individual announcements.  I'm guessing it's adam richard since no retraction from Boston Herald.

Re Coach T's statement to Gary that he had made a couple of offers to RBs and had in fact "been raided by Penn State late last night"  - a possible: (6-0 215 sub 4.6 wouldve been nice!)

Jack Haffner unveiled plans to join Penn State coach Bill O’Brien’s first team as a preferred walk-on during a signing day ceremony Wednesday at the North Building.

Haffner’s recruiting process baffled Wolski, who has sent more than 50 players to various colleges since arriving at State College in 2004.
Against a schedule loaded with Quad-A heavyweights, Haffner rushed for 2,143 yards last fall, the second highest single-season total in Centre County history behind former NFL running back Larry Johnson. The 6-foot, 215-pound Haffner earned first team all-state honors and has been timed below 4.6 seconds in the 40- yard dash, yet generated little Division I interest.
“It’s unbelievable,” Wolski said. “I don’t know what the answer is. People had the tape and we called. You hear from some people and they say they have two or three better. I would like to see the tape on the two or three better.”
In recent weeks, Haffner visited Holy Cross and Lafayette of the Division I-AA Patriot League and Division II Indiana (Pa.). Instead of seeking the football security attached with a scholarship, Haffner wanted to play at the highest level.
“It got frustrating,” Haffner said, “but it’s just the way things panned out. Penn State was my dream since the beginning, so I’m just happy I’m going to be a part of it.”
Haffner met hasn’t O’Brien. Wolski sent film of Haffner to Penn State’s previous coaching staff, then updated the film and met with current assistants Ron Vanderlinden and Mac McWhorter. Penn State recruited Haffner as a fullback./////

Yes, sorry, "preferred walk-on" I added another line from the article.

I don't blame the kid; he grew up in State College and it's his dream.  Good luck to Mr. Haffner, and if it doesn't work out, maybe give a call next year.

Yes, some kids prefer to play, and other would do anything to wear a certain schools uniform.

Does anyone remember Tom Williams from the late 90's?  He left Lafayette after "the study" and opted to walk on at Penn State.  He actually ended up starting at LB for the Nittany Lions.

Playing for Paterno and Penn State was a Williams family tradition.  Tom was odd man out until he transferred.

Dark period in Lafayette sports history. They were going to gear the whole offense around him. Eve telling everyone to "leave their options open" probably sealed the deal for him.

Can't blame anybody for taking a shot, even a long shot,  at a big-time school. One walk through the tunnel onto the field at a place like PSU, VA Tech, whatever, is probably as exhilerating of an experience as you can have as an athlete.

Is this a true story?  Did she really?

Yes, but, I think he was a tight end and did start.

LB, and lettered only in 2001.  He was a FB for Russo.

He will indeed be a very good player for Pards. Congrats

Congratulations to the young man.   Offers from Colgate and Lehigh.  Why was Mr. Crawford's signing delayed?

Perhaps it took an extra day to get all those people in the photograph.

Hopefully.  He also comes from the High School with the best name in America.  The Grand Army of the Republic Memorial High School.

Darrell Crawford's signing was not delayed -- it was with the rest of the signing day group. He was not No. 31. We have not had official word yet on that one.

Bogie is referring to the fact that crawford was not among the initial 27 scrolled names.  This elaborate signing ceremony would be a very logical reason for a delayed fax.

Crawford looks to be all about athleticism, quickness, instincts and vision in space.  Not pure speed - Feb '11 combine 5-9 165lbs-4.85 40,  50.9 sparq.

Stats may not be extraordinary , he is a football player. A gamer.

Oh yeah and a great kid from what I've read.  However, a curious fan wants to know why this terrific athlete, playmaker, "gamer,"  “one of the most explosive players I’ve seen on film in many years,”  was being fought over by PL instead of CAA level teams: 4.85 appears to be the answer.

Our staff had success with a similarly athletic player who changed positions when he arrived, Shaun Adair.  Seems Coach T sees even greater potential for "Butter."

On Sat. @ halftime on RCN, Gary L interviewed Coach T again and he stated that he was awaiting another message about another recruit. Any idea how that worked out?

It has been hypothesized on this board - and it is not unreasonable - that any/all post signing day "gets" will be lumped together in one announcement at a later date.  Since Frank is in contention with "the academies" for (we assume, based on the wording of prior comments) more than one, this may not be for some time.  You are reminded that the Brad Maurer signing was not announced until May.

Since Maurer isn't coming back, shall we hold our collective breath here?
