Sinking like a rock

I think us and Holy Cross are the only all sport members of the Patriot League that did not win at least one title. That's awful!!! And we have perhaps one of the most successful and generous booster organizations in the League.

We need a new approach. It's obvious that the administration has no interest in athletic excellence. They hold potential student-athletes to a higher academic threshold than the general student body. They are now limiting the amount of financial aid coaches can give. This will not change unless the alumni withhold financial contributions.  Its equally obvious that the athletic administration is powerless, they are nothing more than secretaries filling out forms.

While I do not favor eliminatng any sports, I do beleive we are too small to excell in all sports. Instead, we should emphasize selected sports with a goal of being the league champion at least once every four years. Football should be one of those sports because of the money power of the football backers. Mens and womens basketball are both high profile sports where a NCAA appearance has a high impact on alumni and subsequently financial support for the school. Mens soccer and womens field hockey are close to being consistently title contenders and with a little more support could be.

It wouldn't take much, a few dollars here and there and giving a coach an admissions break occasionally for the progam maker kid.

We are too small for most anything that we aspire to be, 23 div 1 sports, concerts, clubs, top notch science and engneering, overseas experiences, high paid faculty, multi services from multiple deans, research opportunities...it only works with an endownment 3 of 4 times our size.  So we need to do a little of both... find out what we are really good at and do it well. That will mean raising the size of our school 300-500 students and forget trying to have a first class music dept and anything else someone has a wish for. We also need to rebalance more toward the liberal arts , so that the 300-500 students are english, history, economics students where that tuition will go right to the bottom line. And finally, forget about being need blind...there is not enough in the piggybank for that and excellence too!! In order to keep the quality high aid must be merit based for the most part. And by the way at 50 k a year and deflation there is NO tuition hike that could posible be justified in that environment.
