Someone please explain it to me

The college has a use or lose it policy regarding scholarships. Men's basketball for example can have 3 scholarshihps a year. If Fran does not use the scholarship or a player leaves he loses the scholarship or must raise money to pay for the 4 th player even though he is spendig the same amount of money. FH and men's soccer since they are not counter sports still must use all their scholarships and cannot carry over anything not used.
Does this make ANY sense to anyone. I have heard this from the coaches directlly.

It is true; it makes no sense- it is the Lafayette way. Perhaps, our AD would like to explain it. Yea, like he is going to fight for anything.

I am very confused.

1.   Newspaper reports this year have said that LC signed four players to letters of intent:    Mower, Petkovich, Pelham, and Willen.

2.   Last year, four players were reportedly given basketball scholarships:   Mintz, Benbow, Wheeler, and Visockas.

Are you saying that the fourth scholarship player in each class (both of whom replaced players who left) are being funded exclusively by funds from alums/boosters - almost $400,000 for the four years?     It's hard to figure out any logic in that.
Lafalum

Yes the funding must come from the outside. Whether its for the whole four years I'm not sure or whether he can raise the money through with an extra paid game with a big program I don't know.
In the case of FH and Soccer they can't raise that kind of money so they lose it.Its stupid. I sometimes think the powers that be try to put as much obstacles in front of us as posible. Let's face if wasn't for the efforts of the alumni we would be Div 3 today much less have any scholarships. Our AD is not a vigorous political infighter much less his boss the Dean. At moment I don't see anyone on the BOT who cares enough.

There has to be more to this.  The basketball scholarships make no sense whatsoever.   I understand the use or lose for Soccer and FH.  Quite honestly shame on those coaches if they don't use the scholarships allocated to them.

i dont know the motivation for the rule, but it does provide strong incentive for coaches to retain the players they recruit. given the transfer issues lafayette had leading up to the approval of scholarships (some likely due to the lack of scholarships), the structuring makes quite a bit of sense to me.

thats not to say its a good thing for lafayette basketball. rather, it just doesnt seem particularly non-sensical.

Actually I don't agree with you on the FH and Soccer . Remember, they are not a counter sport and if they offer a partial to someone who turns it down late, that money might be better spent next year.

Lafayette has never been short of idiots and jackasses when it comes to establishing rules and policies for athletics.  Consider:  the powers that be can tell the faculty that they were forced to make certain decisions by alumni with checkbooks, but they didn't go in all the way.
