Thanks 29!
Andy

Just saw the email from Coach JG to FoF.  Giving us some inside info every now and then is a great idea and a welcome addition. Much appreciated.  Coach sets an example for the kids; extra effort, getting the details right, not taking the easy way out. So glad he's ours!

Thanks. I was hoping this would be put up.

We are going to have quality and depth at linebacker like we've never had before IMO.

I enjoyed watching the replay. Several new offensive schemes stood out. And that Bissell kid can kick the sh*t out of it, can't he?

But I wish I could have been there. The video often doesn't give enough of a view of the pre-snap defensive formations so you can't really tell what Luke Thompson has in mind for his crew. Nevertheless I REALLY like the secondary a lot.

OL was pedestrian vs a strong defensive front but a couple of running plays showed the OL scheming to cause the D line to over-pursue, resulting in some yards. That was nice to see.

I'm now in the Josh Davis fan club. Bootlegs, splitting the pocket to run for yards, quickly surveying his options downfield, side-arming it . . . he looks like a baller with a feel for the game. Not always accurate but he's getting the reps he needs with his receivers now and in August. Hopefully that'll help him find his downfield targets and minimize the checkdowns to Joey Chenoweth from the slot (nothing against Joey, of course). And I presume Mr. Davis doesn't need a know-it-all on this board to remind him to keep it high and tight when he takes off running. Wink

Fun seeing the new coaches in action on the sideline, too.

+1
Davis orchestrated a 70 yard drive that ate up most of the first quarter. That was impressive in itself.  Tavani would be proud! Smile  My guess is Davis will continue to improve or at least be good enough to allow one the others (including the freshmen) to emerge at some point. Maybe it's not until 2018.

These are my pre-preseason grades of each position based on the spring game and what I know we have coming back.

QB - C+. Just based on the number of bodies
RB - B-  Again bodies but someone needs to take the lead and keep it.
WR - B+. We're better than we think
OL - C. If healthy
TE - A. Wads is a big problem for defenses, plenty of back up

DL - A+ assuming a healthy Rothrock. They'll be fun to watch.
LB - A+ BB's return with Hinchen and Root makes this the best D in the league.  Lots of depth. Maybe one of the frosh get some playing time??
Secondary - A.  The best athletes we've had back there in a long time.
Kicking - B+ "Quote from above". Needs to work on consistency.
Speacial teams - B+ just based on the coach's enthusiasm!!  Curious to see who we have returning. My guess is that these coaches put a real threat back there and not someone to just play center field!!

Thoughts??

Interesting positional assessment. I agree, although the LB crew has a stud in Brandon Bryant, who had 114 tackles two years ago and looks to me to be in the class with any of the tough Tavani-era LBers including Romans. #33 has size, strength, quickness and a will to destroy. He won't get preseason accolades because he missed half of last year, but I think he might be the best in the league.

Wowwww!  I completely spaced on BB because he didn''t finish the season.  You are correct that he's most likely the league's best at his position.  I will edit my grades based on his return!!

The problems will be at O-line and QB. The D will be stellar.
