Starting to think about taking this to the next level

While we have come a long way since Voy I think it might be time for an upgrade.

I'm thinking about a domain name....(Feel free to suggest one), blogging capabilities (I've got shit to say), fancier graphics, pics, maybe even objective write ups.

Do you think I could get media credentials for my "alternative" site?

I could see the press conference now...

"Tammy this is Aaron Snyder from leopardsroar.com (waving my credential because God knows it's hard to get seats)....Now that you've completed the turnaround, what mountains are left to climb? IS it true you are in talks with Rutgers?"

Oh the possibilities!

Either way---I want to raise the bar....Shoot me any ideas you may have.

As long as somthing can be found to host things for free or cheaply it sounds good.

I think a big drawback of this board is that it is hard to find.  Google search Lafayette message board and you just dont find this place.  I am sure we would draw more people if it could be easily found via google.

The Holy Cross Message board is quality, and I think that is somthing this place can aspire too.

Maroon, you've done a great job so far.

Like Tanks mentioned, if we could find this site using a Google, Yahoo , Bing search.  also if the site worked with Firefox.  It would be nice if you could have blogging capabilities.  heck some of us write long enough posts anyway (myself included).
Andy

This site is fine with me, but if a new format would encourage more from the mind of The Maroon, I'm all for it.  Are you thinking something along the lines of the LU blog?  You would be terrific.
The Maroon

I can't believe Google's "Bots" haven't picked this thing up. Let me see if there isn't something I can't do about that. Considering something I wrote on a blog got me pulled into HR it's hard for me to believe it's hard to find this board...

I don't know what the deal is with Firefox....Let me see if when I get the ads removed that doesn't help. I don't think the outfit that hosts this board is in this country---(when I pay to remove the adds they convert the currency to Euros)--maybe that has something to do with it.

Either way....Lafayette's always making itself look nicer....I'll think about making us the benchmark standard for college sports discussion....

I think the site is terrific. Compliments to you Maroon. When the mass exodus occured from the Voy boards I think you really set the bar high and were a bit of a role model for other sites. I love the idea of raising the bar even further. I think LFN does a fantastic job for Lehigh fans (though he loses me completely when he claims to write objectively about the league on the whole). If you had the time I would think that you could do at least as well as he does and I think you could actually be objective. And I don't think press credentials would be out of the question at all. Especially since you mainly appeal and cater to alumni. As such I think there would probably be some excellent opportunities to partner with the Friends of Football. Best of luck!! Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

I love this site and have from day 1.  My impulse reaction to your thoughts to upgrade is "if it ain't broke,..."  Still, if we can increase readership and input, go for it.  Blogging, on the other hand takes time, commitment and a lot of work.  Are you sure you want to go there?  We will all be over there cheering for you, but don't expect any of us opinionated loudmouths to run out with a rope when you fall in a hole.  On the other hand, maybe you could arrange some sort of a group or seasonal blog.  You know,

Andy and/or 94 and/or Franks on football

and maybe

Xbo and/or Maroon and/or Kilted on hoops

and maybe

Lafalum as our hard news/breaking news correspondent

and maybe

Bogus as our roving correspondent - sort of an op/ed piece

and maybe

carney2 as curmudgeon in residence - kind of our own Andy Rooney.

It doesn't necessarily have to be same old, same old with one voice and a publication deadline.

Yeah--increasing visibility needs to be the first step. Welk before we run.

Blogging's tough...It's opinion...and people get really ticked the second your opinion isn't favorable...and then you lose access to the people you need and it all falls apart. I love to blog--I do it on my own--but it does take time.

Goleopards.com provides all the info anyone would need about the athletic department from a public relations perspective--it's a great site.

My concern, I guess, is that because of the decline of the newspaper industry, basically anything we are going to read on the teams is going to be fluff. A lot of the home women's games are relegated to a paragraph on page 5 of the ET when they almost always were covered before. A lot of the write-ups on the football games maybe include one quote from the opposing coach where as you used to get a real feel for how both sides felt.

But what I'm talking about is too big in scope---I realize that.

So right now (and I'm not giving a time line) I'm going to try to do the following:

1) Give our forum a straightforward domain name that's easy to remember.
2) Get the ads outta here
3) Find out how to get listed on page 1 of Google when someone types in Lafayette athletics (It can't be that hard...I can find blogs I have written on Google, that that's when I use blogger--which is owned by Google).
4) Just improve the overall look and feel.

Like I said, no time line, but Summer probably makes the most sense as I won't be running my kids all over creation and that's when action is slow.

Take it easy,

I really like this site.  I would not have known about it unless I had gone to Lehigh Football Nation, where LFN provides a link to this site.  LFN does a fantastic job on his blog.  He could be considered the PL's independent voice, and he obviously works very hard at it.  Maybe a little competition to LFN could improve both sites, however.

Yes, this site is a little difficult to locate.  One of the nice things about this site, though, is that it is not full of spammers and trolls.  Being off the beaten path is a very good thing in that regard.  Not so good if you want people to read it, though!

Getting search placement used to be as simple as adding meta tags to a page header, but it's a little different now.  Nevertheless, I see that the folks who host this site, myfreeforum.org, have a forum of their own to show how to optimize Google and Yahoo search results.  Go here to have a look at that section of the forum. You'll also see some new ways of dressing up the site a little.  Use of the key words "Lafayette," "Patriot," "Leopards," "Sports," "Basketball," "Football," "Forum," and "Board" in the header, title or description will help a lot.  The trick is to get it onto Google's first search page.

Addendum to the above - just taking a quick look at the myfreeforum pages, you can modify the layout and design of this site to look like theirs, and you can even give frequent posters "ranks" (like earning gold stars for doing your homework on time).  You can widen the aspect of the page (I think it's time) and you can add blogs and sticky articles.

More on LFN - his piece on 01-20-2010 - he's fair and balanced to the whole PL.  Truly a PL blog as much as it is a Fountain Pigeon blog.

LFN speaks objectively about every team in the league except two. Lehigh and Lafayette. When it comes to those two teams he's about as objective as Keith Olberman.

I refuse to listen to Sunday Night Football pre-game because of my dislike of Olberman.  I cannot stand to look at him - one of the very few people in this world who make me react that way.  Friends were over for a game and took offense when I referred to him (out loud) as a hemorrhoid.  I was told politely to behave like an adult.
