Steelers!

Ross signed with Pittsburgh.
Bogus Megapardus

Gold and Black will suit him just fine.  I can still remember the lil' shaver as a wide-eyed freshman.  Now he'll catch passes from Ben Roethlisberger.

GO ROSS!
Newleopardfan2

Fantastic outcome. Give lots of credit to Ross, and lots to Potts. Go Steelers!
leopard88

Great!  Now I can't root for him any more . . . unless it means running for 200 yds and 2 TDs in a Steelers loss.  Wink

Go, Ravens!

Mini-camp next weekend:

Come on Lousiana-Lafayette, go back to your old name! We had it first! We don't need the (Pa.)

Except for St. Augustine's, the other UDFAs are from bigger programs. Ross really made an impression. St. Augustine's is a D2 school in Raleigh NC with about 1,000 students.

You have to like a UDFA class that has a guy named Whimpey.

I see no other UDFAs from the Patriot League here but guys from Harding, Clarion, Tiffin (Tiffin?) and RPI are on board.

Yeah, I saw that as well. Confused  Hopefully Ross will be able to set it straight when his name goes up on the roster.  Just use Costanzo as a precedent.
carney2

Did any other Patriot league players get drafted or sign as free agents?  Anyone from Fordham?  Nebrich?

I think there was a player from Hobart drafted in the second or third round. Someone from Samford went RD 2, highest FCS player taken.

A bit surprised that the trio of Fordham WR's didn't get picked up.  I suspect they will get a try out somewhere, but it appears interest hasn't really been strong for those guys.

The fact that Ross signed right after the draft is a good sign.  He was a high priority free agent, which means the team will give him a good look.  What happens next is all up to Ross, but he is getting his chance.

Also surprised the Fordham WR Jones did not get a shot yet.

I think we knew all along that Ross S. would be a free agent pickup. once you get to the late rounds this can be an advantage. You end up going to a team that has a real need for you thus a better chance to make the team.

I actually heard the same thing from a friend who is a retired NFL veteran this weekend. He is probably better off as a free agent at this point than a late round.

Nice article (in spite of annoying factual errors) this morning in the Trenton Times regarding homeboy Ross Schuerman from Cream Ridge.

UPDATE:  On the official Steelers roster, Ross is listed as coming from "Lafayette (Pa.)." Rolling Eyes

EDIT/QUERY:  So why isn't Nigel Crawford-Kinney listed on the Steelers roster as coming from "St. Augustine's (NC)?"  Why isn't Howard Jones listed as coming from Shepherd (WV)?  Shayon Green comes to the Steelers from "Miami" as opposed to "Miami (Fla.)" or "Miami (FL)."  There's more than one "St. Augustine" and more than one "Shepherd" and more than one "Miami."  There is only one "Lafayette!"

And just to pick nits, Alejandro Villanueva should be listed as hailing from "Army West Point," of course . . .  Cool

The very least they could do would be to use "Lafayette College," just as they use "Boston College" (Tyler Murphy), in contrast to "Boston University," rather than simply "Boston."

I am deeply offended.  This violent, cismatriculatist microaggression will not stand. Confused

C'mon, Bogie, pull in your horns.  The Steelers roster also lists

Anthony Chickillo from Miami (Fla)
C.J. Goodwin from California University (PA)
and
Ben Roethlisberger from Miami (Ohio)

I realize there's only one Lafayette, but this is pro football and your chances of finding a Mensa member anywhere in the NFL are slim.  Consider the source and all of that.
Bogus Megapardus

I reserve the right to be selective, carney2.  And "cismatriculatist microaggression" ought to be worth at least a bonus point, no?  Anyone?  Prof. Schlueter?

I love how Scheuerman doesn't need to rely on canned responses.  The last thing the Steelers organization needs to worry about is what Ross will say in an interview.  Typical of a Pard who reaches the pro level anywhere.

This from a Q&A with a Ray Fittipaldo, Pittsburgh reporter who attended this past weekend's Steelers minicamp:

Guest: How many undrafted free agents do you expect to make the roster?

Ray Fittipaldo: There always seems to be one or two. Most likely practice squad is best option for those guys, though. Only a few roster spots available unless there are injuries.

Guys often, or sometimes, get cut during their 1st camp, but if they make an impression they can get signed later.  Blake of course took this route.

Then you have Nate Eachus.  He made the Chiefs as a rookie, and performed quite well, but the staff got fired and he hasn't hooked on with another team that I am aware.

True of any team.

Without knowing anything at all, my guess is that Ross had multiple free agent offers.  Perhaps he saw the Steelers' relative lack of depth at RB as the best opportunity.

Certainly there are very few roster spots available in Pittsburgh (as with any team) but Ross has undeniable skill.  Now it's up to him to turn that skill into NFL talent.  I think he makes it - whether on Pittsburgh or on another team.
Lafalum

Given the Steelers thinness at the running back position Ross will get repetitions and playing time in the preseason, that is his best shot! Good Luck to Ross.

Comment from Bob Labriola on Steelers' website:

What I don’t think is that management is finished tinkering with the roster. I don’t believe the Steelers necessarily are content to pick their 53 from the pool of players currently on the roster, even though there is an understanding that at this point – following the draft, the signing of around a dozen undrafted free agents per team, and rookie/tryout minicamp – the available talent largely has been picked over. Specifically at running back, my guess is the Steelers first will see what Josh Harris, Ross Scheuerman, and Cameron Stingilyhave going for them in the battle for the No. 3 job behind Le’Veon Bell and DeAngelo Williams. Maybe they like what they see from one of them, and if they don’t there’s always the waiver wire when all of the other 31 teams have to cut their rosters down to 53.

http://www.steelers.com/news/aske...7387c-15a1-40b1-9633-da43882135f4

Teams are always making moves. The numbers game is staggering. In camp, on other rosters, on practice squads, always in flux.
carney2

The Steelers seem to have two RBs who are locks for roster spots:  Le’Veon Bell and DeAngelo Williams.  Bell is a Pro Bowl caliber back, but is suspended for the first three games of the 2015 season.  Williams is in the twilight of a decent career and may or may not have something left in the tank.  (If he does, it will be somewhat unusual for a RB his age [32] and with as many seasons [10] in the NFL as he has.)  So, those of you who have described the Steelers as having a need at RB are correct.  Including taxi squad spots, they could be carrying 3 additional RBs for the first games of the season while Bell is on suspension, and 2 after that.  Not being drafted may have been a good deal for Ross because he has been able to match up with a team with needs.

Whatever became of the scuttlebutt that Ross is better suited to be a slot back than a RB?  No comments from Pittsburgh have him being evaluated for anything but RB.

Good call on BTSC, Bogie. As a Steeler fan I can tell you that I am on that blog just about every day during the season to get my info. I'll probably be making a special trip to Latrobe for training camp this year to see Shuerman do his thing. If any of you are nearby I highly recommend attending a Steelers training camp practice. They do a great job of making it a family friendly event for the fans.

http://m.bleacherreport.com/artic...th-chart-analysis-at-running-back

A very positive analysis:

The Steelers rounded out their running back corps with a pair of undrafted rookie free agents this year: Lafayette's Ross Scheuerman and Northern Illinois' Cameron Stingily. The two are night-and-day in terms of their size and skill set, and either could be a good fit for the Steelers 53-man roster—or like Harris last year, the practice squad.

Of the two, Scheuerman seems to have the greatest long-term potential in Pittsburgh, given that he has a similar all-around skill set as Bell. Last year, he rushed for 1,191 yards, averaged five yards per carry and had 12 rushing touchdowns, while adding another 521 yards on 57 receptions.

He could spend 2015 on the 53-man roster in order to prevent poaching by another team and become the No. 2 back to Bell in a year's time, when Williams' services will no longer be needed.

Most analyses seem to rely on Ross's LC stats. Any good analyses of his performance in Steelers' camp?

Unlikely.  It's been all minicamps and drills so far.  The Steelers open training camp early because they're in the Hall of Fame Game, but their first day isn't until July 25th.

Fan blogs are probably the best way to track what's going on (do some Google searches), but some other formal media sites include:

*Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
*Greensburg Tribune-Review
*Root Sports Pittsburgh
*KDKA Channel 2
*WTAE Channel 4
*WPXI Channel 11 (not to be confused with the WPIX Channel 11 in New York most of us are more familiar with)

Considering I absolutely despise the Squealers and every team in Shittsburgh (except maybe Robert Morris basketball with former Penn player and Lafayette assistant Andy Toole coaching the team) going back to my time living in western Pennsylvania during my time in graduate school, I hope Ross doesn't stick with the Steelers and ends up on and sticks with another team (though preferably not the Redskins or Cowboys).

Backs on Backers

Yesterday was the first pratice in pads for the Steelers. Just like any other coach HC Mike Tomlin scheduled a few drills to see who is ready to hit. Every Steelers fan's favorite drill in camp is Backs on Backers where the running backs battle the linebackers in simulated blitz pickup. I was looking for some video of the drill, and couldn't find any but Behind The Steel Curtain did a little recap. The drill went like this:
Quote:
Vince Williams took out DeAngelo Williams
DeAngelo had success against Sean Spence
Sean Spence knocked over Ross Scheuerman
Jordan Zumwalt beat Scheuerman
Scheuerman got revenge on Zumwalt twice after that
Arthur Moats flattened Jesse James
Backs didn't have much luck against Ryan Shazier or Lawrence Timmons
Bud Dupree participated in Backers-on-Tackles during this particular drill.

I can't fault Ross for having trouble with Spence, a 3rd round pick from Miami in 2012 who is a season vet looking for increased playing time. Zumwalt is the Steelers 6th round pick from UCLA last year. Glad to see Ross bounce back, because I really doubt that Zumwalt makes the team. The drill really favors the LBs, but a big question about Ross is if he can protect. He will need to make a big impression in this drill down the road to get that extra playing time in some of the preseason games.

Edit: I did find this picture gallary - http://www.steelers.com/photos/ph...0469-4748-908c-d3c9adafa274#start

You can see the the HC and OC were there the whole time. They really place a lot of stock in this drill, to see technique and "compete level". Ross is in a really bad position against Spence in the picture. I wonder if he was surprised with the big LBs speed off the ball?

Friday practice

Rookie running back Ross Scheuerman broke into the open field, cut to the left side of the field and ran up the sideline for a 25-yard gain before Will Gay knocked him out of bounds. Scheuerman looked like an old school Ed Podolak as he broke away from the pack.

From ESPN:

Outside linebacker Jarvis Jones (biceps), linebacker Ryan Shazier (back) and safety Shamarko Thomas (shoulder) all left practice early, Mike Tomlin told reporters after the session Saturday. Reserve running backs Josh Harris (shoulder) and Ross Scheuerman (Achilles) also did not finish.

According to reports he left the field on a cart. I hope it was with an abundance of caution!??? Achillies can be a tough injury!

In report one hour ago Ross walking around so injury appears not serious. He was having a good day with several decent runs. He received a big hit after a 10 yard run from Antwon Blake ( Described as the hit of the day). Whew!!
