Manager Joe Maddon talks about the Rays having to bounce back from tough losses like "little red rubber balls" for a reason.
He is referring to the 1966 hit song Red Rubber Ball, recorded by the little-known folk-rock group the Cyrkle, to which he has something - albeit tangential - of a connection.
Two founding members of the Cyrkle - Tom Dawes and Don Dannemann - attended Pennsylvania's Lafayette College a few years before Maddon did.
And, he has come to find out, they wrote their only other hit, Turn Down Day, which appeared on the flip side of Red Rubber Ball (kids, that's back when they had these things called records ...), in a Lafayette bar that Maddon frequented.
"It was Jack's Bar, in the Kesslerville Hotel," Maddon said. "I went there like every night. That's where I saw Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run, on a little black and white TV. Bar sausage, hard-boiled eggs and Molson ale on draft. That's how I got through college. If they just would have had some classes in there."

LCLF you may have helped me solve what has been a personal mystery. I used to hitch rides with rich frat brothers (the guys with cars) and go to a joint called Jack's Place aka Jack and Glad's. Thirty-something years later I've tried to find the structure without success (Xbo was absolutely no help). It was out toward Metzger, a small bar and pool table in the front of what I remember being a house, not a hotel. A draught Stroh's served in basically a small water glass was 25cents. I will check out Kesslersville next time down, Joe has to be describing the same place.
Joe was an outstanding two-sport athlete, QB and catcher, hurt his knee and went with just baseball after freshmen year, I believe. We had excellent baseball teams during those years under Norm Gigon.
Anyone recall Jack and Glad's?

I've often wondered whatever happened to all the Lafayette stuff he had hanging around. I'm not sure if the house and barn are still there but I know Jack and Glad are gone. The bar sat about 7 and the pool table filled up the rest of the place.
By the way, there is a pcture and article about "The Cyrkle" beginning on page 42 of the winter edition of "Alumni News"

That's it! I thought you said you hadn't heard of it. You think Joe is referring to the same place? I don't recall Kesslersville Hotel.

Jacks was an institution.
Never recall Glad awake - always down on table in back room - nor Jack sober....shots with Jack to close the place was a right of passage.
Frat composites all over the walls, cheap beer in small glasses, ring bologna that probably took 2 yrs off my life....never could do the eggs....
Dont know if I could find it (if its there), but I know I wont forget it.

Funny, seen, and well described. Yeah, one of my first few times in there I ordered a burger then felt so bad when Jack went over to wake up Glad to make it. It was beer bologna only from there on. Fun reminiscing with you guys.
Another hour or so and we're out the door to Army. Must win. Go Pards!

Took a little detour on the way home tonight and can report that Jack and Glad's home and barn are gone. There is now a housing development on the site. The former Kesslerville Hotel is just down the road from Metzger. It is the stone building at the corner of Kesslerville & Uhler roads. It was purchased by the Victaulic Corporation quite a few years ago. They restored the building and use it as a guest house for visiting executives, salesman, etc. I understand the new hangout is Milo's on Cattell street.
