Think it over.....

From the time you step onto campus, whether being a student athlete or a student who knows nothing about sports, it's drilled into your head that Lehigh is the enemy. As an athlete you're told that no matter the records, you have to beat Lehigh. But through all of this, how many here would rather see the leopards trade a win against lehigh in for a great record and a playoff win?

In all honesty, especially as an alum, it is tough to get ready for this game this week.  And saying that sucks.  Beating lehigh doesn't save this season. And too many times coaches rest upon that excuse.  Well at least we beat lehigh.... Yea.  Great. Wheres that get us? Is it suppose to spring board the off season? Cuz that didn't work well this season. Enough is enough.  Yes beat em because theyre our rival.  Most importantly beat em bc theyre the opponent on Saturday. We shouldn't be proud bc we have two wins.  We need to want more than just a win over lehigh

The kids know better. I can't blame the coaches for playing this card, it all they have. But the kids know a victory on Saturday does not change things.

Change things? No, because the record is what the numbers say it is. But a win on Saturday would lend some credence to all the talk about the decimating effect of the injuries this year. You can't lose three starting offensive linemen and expect to perform at the same level -- or four or five defensive backs. Or a senior "strike" who was your second leading tackler as a junior and a leader by example.

The game notes point to 14 out-for-the-season players, and that list includes Matt Mrazek, Draeland James, Chris Brockman, Michael Root, Darren Wright, John Hoffman, Steve Mercado and some really promising freshmen like Kaizer Butler, Dante Lonardo (never even practiced) and  Logan Grieser. Would this be a stronger team with 50 percent of the 14 of them -- or 75 percent? I don't want to be piggish and long for 100 percent. If I could only have a handful, my choices would be Mrazek, James, Brockman, Hoffman and Grieser.

Great points. At this level we just don't have the depth to survive this many key injuries. Needless to say we've not faired well or been able to overcome it. We've showed signs at time, but, just cannot sustain it for a complete game. But, Saturday..................????????

BEAT LEHIGH!
CHIP72

As a non-Lafayette alumnus who is originally from the Lehigh Valley and follows both the Leopards and Lehigh, I'm obviously not the best person to answer the original question.  But I can relate to the question with other sports/teams.  There are (fellow) Philadelphia Eagles fans out there who say "the Eagles can go 2-14 as long as they beat Dallas".  I never, ever understood or agreed with that point of view.  To me, saying something like that implies you hate the Dallas Cowboys more than you like/love the Philadelphia Eagles.  What's the point of being a sports fan if your primary motivation is to root against a team or teams rather than root for a team?  Obviously I don't want to see the Eagles lose to the Cowboys, but I don't like seeing the Eagles lose to ANY team.  I also would gladly take say a 12-4 record and Super Bowl appearance (and preferably win) that included 2 Dallas losses over a 4-12 record with 2 Dallas wins.

Lafayette would end the season with a significant bright spot if they upset Lehigh, but they still would have had a very ugly 2-9 season.  Just because it isn't as ugly as a 1-10 season doesn't mean it still isn't ugly.
