This may be the last straw for me!!

For those of your that did not get a letter from President Wies to the members of the Marquis Society dtd Sept. 11
"Pending final approval by the local planning and zoning committees, we will soon move forward and develop another property owned by the College into an attractive open air arts plaza over the Bushkill Creek. THe plaza which will be located between the Williams Building and the structure on the northeast corner of North Third and Snyder streets that formerly housed Case's Tire Company, will provide an inviting location for students and others to gather downtown." He also goes on to describe their partnership to provide support for the 1753 Bachmannn Publick House.

This is in an atmosphere where budgets especially for athletics are being cut and freshman engineers cannot get some of their classes because of the larger than expected engineers in the new class and budget freezes in that department.( As reported by yesterday's Lafayette)

Before we poo-poo the idea, was there any mention of where the funding will come from?  I know there is state money available for projects like this.
Lafalum

The money is coming from endowment, because in the same letter he touted two other projects and their donors.  The state has already reneged or delayed on the 10 mio for third street because of budget concerns. There is no state matching funds.
Yes, the money comes from the same pot the 750,000 dollars came from to buy the gas station, across from the wawa, with its 250,000 we will have to put up to remediate the site.
So I estimate between these two projects, its maybe a 1.5 mio. The earnings on that is 75,000 per year at 5 %. That's the cost of one professor or three or four asst coaches full time.

I guess I am poo pooing it!!

I know there had been talk of partnering with the City of Easton over the years but I know that was dependent on state money.  Since the money is coming from endowment, I can understand your frustration.

I may have to join the Marquis Society just to get these letters.

Are they still discussing trying to make that old Gulf gas station the new bookstore site?
Lafalum

That was the plan, according to the Lafayette, but it still has to be remeadiated( all the polutants removed)
TheTruth

In 2006, it's not a bad idea since there is no other bookstore in the area.  They may have to wait a bit longer to get this done.   I just hope they make it 2 stories so it's bigger than the exisitng store.

They are going to have to in order to make it worthwhile. But where will parking be? All off site on the streets? I understand a lot will be student/prof walk up but there is generation from off campus. Im sure there will be cheater parking at the Wawa until Wawa really wants to shut that down. Does LC own anything else around there they could demo and make just parking? Dont they own that building right across the side street?

To The Truth- You can join Marquis Society by joining a Friends group- Football, Field Hockey, Soccer. Those donations count toward Annual Fund/Marquis Society qualification with transparency on use of dollars and oversight by Friends Steering Committee.
