Umbc

I feel a win!!! I'll be watching on the computer... Although Im craving crabs... Let's go Pards!!
Bogus Megapardus

This evening's scheduled loss to UMBC, brought to you by the Artie Rothkopf/Dan Weiss Commemorative Anti-Athletics Foundation ("ADCAF"), will take place at 7:00 PM at UMBC's 4,500-seat lacrosse facility in Baltimore.  The Baltimore weather forecast calls for clouds and a comparatively mild 51 degrees with no rain; light winds from the NNE.

UMBC is the "honors" science & engineering arm of the University of Maryland system.  It has about 11,500 undergraduates.  Men's Lacrosse is the premier and featured sport on campus.  Don Zimmerman has been head coach at UMBC since 1994.  From 1984 to 1990, Zimmerman was the head coach at John Hopkins where he won three national championships for the Blue Jays.  Zimmerman is .635 in his career as a head coach.

The 3-5 Retrievers have wins over Monmouth and Richmond, and (last out) over Mount St. Mary's.  The one common opponent to date is Penn; Lafayette lost 9-6 to the Quack Pack at home while UMBC lost 10-8 at Penn.

The defensively-challenged Retrievers switched goalies for the last two games, starting sophomore Ruston Souder in place of Connor Gordon.  But here's the stat long-suffering Pard lax fans need and want the most:  UMBC is .346 on faceoffs for the season while the Pards are .321.  Redshirt senior LSM Nathan Klein (6-0/190) is UMBC's principal FOGO.  Freshman Brett Malamphy (5-10/195) sees some snaps as well.  Both have better win %ages than any Lafayette FOGO.

The loss to UMBC will be streamed live on America East TV:

Against a Don Zimmerman-coached team on their home turf?  None.  No chance at all.  I'll still be watching, though.

We'll beat NJIT later on this season but that's it.
Bogus Megapardus

UMBC middie golfs a three-bouncer in from mid field with 1.8 seconds to go in the quarter.  SMH.
Bogus Megapardus

This has been a really sloppy game by both teams.  The trouble is, we're about forty percent sloppier.

Still can't win a faceoff and actually maintain possession to save our lives.
Bogus Megapardus

UMBC's glass-front locker facility - looks like a Wal-Mart with those sliding glass doors.
Bogus Megapardus

As UMBC rolls to the double-digit lead, I take back everything I wrote - there's no way this squad beats anyone, including NJIT.
Bogus Megapardus

I feel really terrible for our guys.

Nice call bogus... I was soooooo wrong

First of all... What was #3 and #16 doing ?? They should have been pulled in the 2nd quarter #3 was trying to dodge thru 2 Dpoles... This is not youth lax...Ski has to run #9 #4 #15 80% of the game... Just like umbc kept #44 on the whole game... #42 quit today by looking at his body language ... Good move by pulling the goalie... #7 is not seeing the ball.. #45 is a turnover machine
seenalot

I was, and still am, pulling for Ski - but coming to the painful conclusion that he may be in over his head.  The kids we have out there didn't come from crap HS programs, but all too often they are playing like it...kinda hard not to lay a fair amount of that at a Coaches feet.  Just look lost and without a real plan to change ......anything......it just keeps going on and on.

Agree, feel bad for the kids.

Team needs to put everything into faceoffs. What they are doing is not working and they can't keep doing it expecting a different result. Put the three best ground ball players (some combo of #26, #36, #19, #38 and #16) on the faceoff and at worst will prevent clean wins by the opponent.

#26 - Soph
#36 - Frosh
#19 - Frosh
#38 - Frosh
#16 - Senior

Friday night's game was the worst effort I've ever seen from this program. The guys seem completely unmotivated.

I appreciate your insight and positive outlook - but you'll have to pardon my (and probably our collective) cynicism as we've been hearing variations on the "we're not winning now but give it a couple years" theme for decades now.

Right now we're playing a lot of underclassmen which tells us they are better than our seniors - time will tell if it means they are better than the bench players of our opponents.

Note that Wagner, the team we managed to beat in the season opener, now has four wins--UMass Lowell (first year program I think), VMI, Mt. St. Mary's,and NJIT. (Losses to Dartmouth 11-10, Rutgers 13-10, and Monmouth 7-3.)

This was the bottom of division 1 on laxpower last year...

 62        Lafayette
 63        Monmouth
 64        Mount St. Mary's
 65        Furman
 66        VMI
 67        Wagner

So 2 first year programs, and the 64th and 66th team. The only thing that stat shows is that Wagner is getting better, and can now compete at the bottom. Note Matt Poskay was hired at Wagner the same summer Rogalski was hired here.

Matt Poskay.  Geez, that name brings back memories.  I remember when my son's team went up against Poskay in high school.  Poskay played for Johnson H.S. in Clark NJ, IIRC.  The kid could do things on the field that no mortal man should be able to accomplish.  He could find seams and spaces that didn't exist to the ordinary human eye.

As a coach, however, Poskay really didn't have much (if any) experience when Wagner hired him, did he?

No he didn't, two years assistant at Drew. The comment was more hinting at the progress that Wagner has made under his direction compared to our progress in the same time period.
