Villanova game thread - first meeting since 1920!

Wow - fricking bastard! Less than 15 seconds, on our first offensive play after kickoff, DeSean Brown gets popped, fumbles, easy 6 for Nova. Ahead, 7-0..Just great!
edge29

A down hill running play. Just what we've all been asking for. Then...

I'm starting to think we're not very good.

Seriously guys, what did you expect? Hopefully this is respectable but we need to get to the manageable part of the schedule.
Pards Rule

Fly I CERTAINLY expected more with the black jerseys!
Pards Rule

Good D stop on our side of field...Nova punts...Great hold!
Pards Rule

Shovel pass - first fricking down! Did not I call for a Russo heavy shovel call on another thread, X-15 Shovel!!
Pards Rule

End of 1 Villanova 7 Lafayette 0. Nova driving though.

FG Nova, leads 10-0...somehow someway we need to get on board to keep this in hailing distance!

Yeah impressed how they toughened up after the first couple drives!
Pards Rule

Reed sacked on obvious 4th down...Punt team up!
bethlehempard

13 yards on the ground. We're on pace!
Will somebody please remind Nova that the spread is for the WHOLE game, not the first 20 minutes?
Pards Rule

Great run by Nova..OUCH!
Pards Rule

What kind of tackle was that. Or attempt at I should say?
Pards Rule

Nova first and goal on 2

TD Nova, highlighted by that burn run...17-0..Almost at spread now.

The spread  is just many fun things we can bet on!

The over under on Lafayette yards per carry is at 2.2

I want to know what flavor the Kool-Aid is you guys drink!

#92 for Nova is a monster, and just another example of Philly kids that go CAA and don't bat an eye at the Patriot

I'm coming around though, we've played these teams tough, might have a shot at some league games, if we have the bodies to make it t that point.

Our OL literally moves parallel to the LOS on run plays. Not sideways and upfield, but parallel. It's not the OLinemens fault.  This O is crap.

Different philosophies, Heff also use to recruit undersized athletic Mike Saint Germains, Greg Lipperts, Jesse Padillas, and build them up to bruisers.
NLF

OK - 17-7 with a stop by the D to close the half. Coulda been worse, given that start.

They are the more athletic, faster players. We had a good recruiting class. Why do you think so many freshmen are playing.

It's not the players, it's the coaching that penalize or remove players from the return game for being creative. DO WHAT THEY WANT OR SIT.

Damn! Forester gets punt blocked and Nova on our 25.

After a couple of nice stuffs as expected Nova squirts it in, TD. 24-14, Villanova near end of 3rd. Damnit on the blocked punt!

Yards per carry is down to 1.8 with the college rule that deducts sack yardage from rushing yards.

Offensive scheme? Offensive line coaching? Strength & conditioning? These are our problems. Other D1AA teams are bigger, faster, stronger, better organized. Maybe Art was right. We should be D3? I apologize, I'm disgusted. The kids played hard.
SixtyEighter

Desean is not only a fumbler but he usually managed to fumble at the most devastating time in the game. It's not just him though the whole team is turnover happy. Even when we get a turnover we give it right back.that has happened in 2 straight games which I have never seen before.

Agree with everything you said except the D3 comment. A handful of alumni kept us in D1 by donating for facilities. No way LC would have paid for any of these facilities. Now LC just needs to fund the program's fully, which they cannot do. We love to brag that we have 23 sports programs but if they all suck, what good is that? It would be nice to do a few things well.

As to D3, that's where the admin would like to be. Wh n you only have 2400 students it's hard to fund in when 800 are athletes. Wofford fights the same thing with only 1500 students. But they fund the big programs.

The team is better. We have some good freshmen and some good seniors. We are more competitive. We should win another game or two.

In addition to the bobble, his mechanics looked slow. Overall, he has done quite well, but this one hurt the team for sure. Had 2 blocked his freshman year. Before that, last blocks for a Leopard punter were in 2010.

I was 2-3 sections to the left and higher in the stands from the people with said sign.  I'm sympathetic to the people taking exception to the questionable police actions (and more broadly, speaking against some people treated more fairly than others), but I thought the sign was, at best, in very poor taste.

The game was a little strange.  In the 1st half, it seems liked Villanova should have built an even larger lead before Lafayette started their comeback.  Nonetheless, the Leopards had stretches where they outplayed the Wildcats (mainly from sometime in the 2nd quarter to the blocked punt in the 3rd quarter) and had an opportunity to take the lead and potentially win.  Ultimately, Villanova was able to win because they scored two defensive touchdowns, set up another touchdown on a blocked punt, and thwarted two possible Lafayette touchdown drives with interceptions in the end zone.

Chip watched the whole thing on stream. BTW isnt the score box supposed to have a down & distance at the very end on the feed? Im like theres a box there but 90% of the time blank? Anyways, I concur with your analysis. I felt the tide turn with the stop of the fake field goal. Before as I mentioned in gamethread, they were being shoved even on D. That stop gave them some field ego! And I called it, I was saying watch the fricking fake, watch the fricking fake. And the TD on our first drive of the second half narrowed it to two before the bobble and blocked punt and then shortly thereafter pick 6 and the black swan crash landed on our pond of dreams. Look, once again we were far from embarrassed and it wasnt a 48-10 blowout. Traction happens! Keep it moving!

As I made my near-annual trip to Fisher Stadium (and earlier in the day, Goodman Stadium) for this game as part of a weekend family visit and this was the first Lafayette game I was able to see in any way this year*, I have a few comments on the uniforms, which I thought were UGLY (similar to how I felt when the Leopards wore similar duds for L-L 150).

1) Why did Lafayette get rid of the maroon stripe on the helmet?  It makes an already mediocre helmet (don't like the predominant white color) even worse.

2) Charcoal gray is not one of Lafayette's school colors, SO STOP WEARING JERSEYS AND PANTS WITH THAT COLOR.

3) Teams should avoid wearing jerseys and pants that are the same color as one another IMO.

4) If it was up to me, I'd change Lafayette's helmets to maroon with the Leopard head logo on the side (or the combined L/Leopard head logo), or possibly maroon with a white or gold "L" on the side.

*The CCSU game wasn't televised/streamed (and I was attending a minor league baseball game that night anyway), I was at the Phillies/Nationals game in DC during the Delaware game, and was driving back from the Temple/Penn State game and then attended a concert in the DC area during the Princeton game.

IMO, Lafayette, while still not particularly good, are much, much better than they were last season when they were a total dumpster fire.  (I attended last year's Princeton game, which was probably worse than the 40-7 final score.)  The Leopards competed against a good (though probably not very good) Villanova team, and didn't get discouraged when they fell behind 17-0.  Last year's Lafayette team, at least the one that took the field in the latter half of September and October, would have packed it in at that point.  By contrast, this year's Leopards team made things more interesting than most people were probably expecting and lost primarily because they committed some major mistakes that ultimately decided the game.

The one thing, besides the bad turnovers, that is concerning for Lafayette is how effective Villanova was at running the ball for much of the game.

Yes these were special jerseys they break out on occasion to get the kids psyched up. It used to be black but is this the first time the charcoal gray was used beside #150? I read where the late Tom Kirchoff picked the color before the game at Yankee Stadium.

There were ugly jerseys in Yankee Stadium but they weren't worn by Lafayette. Were those uniforms the Lehighs were wearing or kids pajamas?

Rich, watched part of your game before heading to Easton. You run the same inside play out of the pistol that we attempt, difference was 6 foot holes for the RB. Your bubble screens are blocked well and consistently effective.  If you believe as I do that player ability is on par, the difference has to lie elsewhere.

Our time and situation game management left much to be desired throughout the game, beginning at the 14:45 mark of first quarter with our immediate turnover.

I can make my case with three play(s).  First, we don't convert on a third and 8, third quarter, on a very good throw by Reed.  Second, we then have a punt blocked, through no fault of our punter.  On prior punt(s) Nova had good pressure in the same protection location.  Somebody had to see this upstairs.

Then down 24-14, on about our own 30, we call Run, Run, little gain, to set up 3rd and 9 or so.  Everybody on the Nova' sideline knows we are throwing the ball, Nova plays extra coverage and we throw a pick 6.  We have to be more imaginative and keep defenses on their heels.  And check the game plays, because the punt block and pick occur immediately after our score to close within 17-14.   Momentum should have switched to our side right before these two plays.

I thought our secondary played reasonably well, and our defense played hard overall.  I like Drews persistence, and we will get better.  We had effective plays on offense, and must continue to push the pile with our run game.

On to Holy Cross next week....
