Watching our CFL guys

First of 2 preseason games:

Ross with Hamilton on Thursday

Matt S now with Winnipeg, on Saturday

Football!  Good luck Pards!

Need to research streaming availability or TV.  Any help would be appreciated.
bethlehempard

The first game is set for TSN3.

Thespec.com is the best source for TiCats news.

Matt Smalley: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/...big-impact-at-camp-427100881.html

"Smalley has stood out in his first few days of practice."
SixtyEighter

Check ESPN website. ESPN carried an assortment of games on cable and ESPN3.

Great tip, 68! Just checked ESPN3 and the TiCats are indeed scheduled for Thurs night!  Unfortunately Saturdays scheduled game is other than BC.

Great news on Matt making an impact!

TD Ross Scheuerman. 14-yard catch.

Nice! Here it is:

I didnt get a chance to watch live,  but ESPN3 should have the game archived.

Can anybody summarize (in plain language) the CFL pre-snap motion rules? I still don't get it.

Only the slot backs may "waggle" (move toward line of scrimmage pre-snap). That said, bogie,  I've exhausted my knowledge of CFL rules.
bethlehempard

Winninpeg's preseason games will not be broadcast. I believe the CFL allows every player behind the line of scrimmage to move before the snap.
Recall the days when the CFL tried to invade the U.S. with teams in Baltimore, Shreveport, Sacramento and Las Vegas.
Kpard

And you can move towards the line of scrimmage pre snap. It is just nuts.
bethlehempard

Smalley has returned two kickoffs for 35 yards total. He returned a punt for seven yards and has a special-teams tackle and a defensive tackle. It's late in the second quarter.
Andy

Reading through the CFL rulebook I haven't found where forward motion is addressed. However:

Wiki:
Canadian football: All backfield players are allowed to move toward the line of scrimmage before the snap, regardless of their horizontal position.

CFL rulebook glossary (prepared by CFL DataBase)

Slotback (SB), Slot
The inside receivers, closest to the quarterback. Slotbacks are allowed to “waggle” or move towards the line of scrimmage before the snap.
Wide Receiver (WR), Wideout
The receivers widest on either side of the field. Normally they line up on the line of scrimmage, but can be in motion before the snap.

Toronto Star 4/9/15:

The package of rule changes approved this week represent the most significant steps the CFL has taken since the late 1980s, when the league allowed motion in the offensive backfield. Since then, up to four receivers can “waggle” and hit the line of scrimmage running.

Winnipeg released 11 players this morning. As of now, Matt Smalley remains on the team. He made some plays Saturday and was called for the 34-yard PI penalty that set up the tying field goal.
Andy

Matt released today per Corky Blake.  Team had been contemplating signing a former top CFL return man who had been released by NFL team, not sure if that happened.
bethlehempard

Ross Scheuerman has secured the backup RB job behind former USC Trojan C.J. Gable.

Hamilton at Toronto, 4 pm on ESPN2.
bethlehempard

Hamilton has the worst secondary ever.
Call Matt Smalley!

Every time I flip it on Toronto is completing a long pass. I haven't seen RS yet.
The pre-snap motion provides a hint of nausea, sort of like a barely noticed earthquake.

The Tiger Cats offense is cranking out about 2 yards per carry. They must be using the FT playbook.
bethlehempard

Well, who knew?

Thought the same!  I've never seen a pro team get beaten deep that many times in a single game. They've got a lot of work to do.
bethlehempard

Scheuerman will replace Gable on Saturday night as the starting RB. Gable didn't do much in Game One except block as Hamilton's OL was nearly as bad as their secondary. Maybe RS can help open things up.

I umm . . . . sort of hacked this video off the Tiger-Cats web site. "One-on-one" with Ross Scheuerman:

Good stuff.

It's pretty obvious Hamilton cares nothing about running the football. Ross 5 carries, 19 yards. He also caught 4 passes for 29 yards, one a 15-yard gain. Ham lost 37-20. On the bright side, a Ham guy intercepted a pass and ran 110 yards for a TD.
bethlehempard

Hamilton is an awful team right now. There's no way around that.

36 did more with the ball than Gable did in Game One, and there are a lot of games left. Last night was a bad team effort coming off a bye. Austin will make some changes.

After roughly a half century of following Temple football, Philadelphia pro teams and Lafayette, I'm not quite prepared to take on a new disappointing team but the Canadian game is interesting to watch. Plus most of those guys are putting it all on the line for not a lot of money.

Game 3 is Saturday night. Unless it's on in County Mayo, I'll have to miss this one.

The announcers liked Ross S. and perhaps will learn how to pronounce his name and the name of his school. Last night it was "Schoy-er-man" and La-FYE-Ette. His name is challenging but why do so many people screw up Lafayette?

Three down football has a lot to do with that.  A 3 yard run on first down sets up the equivalent of 3rd-and-7.

I remember it well.  I still have a Baltimore CFL t-shirt in my closet.   Smile
Andy

Several nice carries including a TD by Ross on Saturday first half as he started again. Second half spent mostly pass blocking as they tried to climb back into it.  They need to get it to him in space via swings and screens.

Can watch archive via Watch ESPN app.
bethlehempard

No. 36 has 61 rushing yards (40 on one carry) and two receptions for 36 yards with about two minutes left and Hamilton holding a 2-point lead.
Now 67 rushing yards. The TiCats are trying to run down the clock. Now a FG and the lead is 5.
SixtyEighter

The announcer for the game had a very nice comment about Ross- He said "Every time he touches the ball he makes something happen ." I hope he meant it and that it wasn't the usual announcer's blather. It would be great for Ross to get some recognition. He is to be admired for his perserverance.
bethlehempard

No. 36 is eighth in the league in total yards, though he's played just three games, and his 6.3 YPC is here highest among the Top 10.

bethlehempard

Gable is listed as the starter for tonight.
Hamilton has named June Jones (former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons and the University of Hawaii) as assistant head coach. They need something. Maybe they'll go crazy and hire Manziel.
bethlehempard

Ross Scheuerman is now on the practice squad for Hamilton. The Tiger Cats started the year badly and have not improved. CJ Gable has been at RB.
Gable's salary is reportedly about C$90,000 (US$72,000) which sounds archaic by NFL standards, but he's the highest-paid running back on the team so, with nothing going right, play the "big" contract guy.
pardfan

Hamilton is 0-8
Andy

Poor defense always playing catch up. OL banged up and ineffective. They need Gable's pass blocking abilty.
bethlehempard

Hamilton lost one game 60-1.

"Dammit, where's the goddam chart! What does the chart say to do when it's 60-0?"

That raises the issue of the 1-point defensive safety in American football.
It hurts just thinking about it.

Wikipedia:

In college football and the NFL, a conversion safety could also be scored by the defense.[22] To accomplish this, the kicking team would have to retreat all the way back to their own end zone. This is wildly implausible; it has been hypothesized that, perhaps, such a scenario would involve a turnover on a two-point conversion attempt followed by a lost fumble before the defensive player reaches the end zone, with the ball finally being downed by the offense in its own end zone; the other plausible scenario in which this could happen is if the snap on an extra point kick attempt is wildly errant and the kicking team repeatedly bats the ball toward their end zone to avoid the other team recovering and returning it (while not being able to recover it themselves or bat the ball out of bounds). While such a conversion safety has never been scored by the defense, it is the only possible way in which a team could finish with a single point in an American football game.[A][29]

Wildly implausible? Yeah.

Another oddity, the 37-24 OT win over Colgate when Safford
went all the way rather than downing it.
And two-point runbacks.
Kpard

Meaningless points, but, fun to watch and the kid has a memory to share.
