I know this is totally politically incorrect but we have created one more VP position ( six figure salary, with staff and program expense to match) as the  VP for diversity and community engagement. GEEZ we are a friggen school of 2300 students and  our administrator to student ratio just got raised again. This is while we pay asst coaches 4-10k per year and we are short one trainer, because we don't have the money, AND we need to raise tuition 7% per year!!!
That is the second six figure administrator we added in the past 18 mos.

C'mon lets get real here!!

Perfect.  That position will become as useful as it is in corporate America.  

My guess is we looked around and saw most other schools doing it so we got in line to do it too....ba, ba, ba.

That said from a purely selfish perspective it wont hurt recruiting.

Is it really a factor?? Does some kid choose between us and Colgate based upon our VP of diversity?? To my mind this will turn into a 500,000 dollar per year expenditure feel good position. Given it is also for community engagement, maybe it means we will have more projects like the ones at the base of the hill.( 10 mio dollars well spent??)
