WLax at Iona

3:00 PM start for Lafayette's lacrosse team, at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle. Video from Iona Insider requires a subscription, and can be accessed here:

You can get a 24 hour subscription for $5.95.

I guess there should be some concern that lightning in the area might delay or suspend this game.

This team has a prime opportunity to show what it's made of today. Iona is no pushover. They clobbered Wagner in a 10-0 shutout and destroyed CConn 15-6. (Those are the kinds of embarrassing losses that have been inflicted upon the Pard JV lax team of late.) That said, the Gaels did not fare as well against two PL teams, Holy Cross and Lehigh.

Desperate to see someone wearing an LC uniform playing decent lax.  While I know squat about the women's game I will probably tune in.

Yes, they certainly didn't fare well vs HC and LU - losing 10-0 and 13-3.   This should be an easy LC win.

Unfortunately, there is no such thing for any sport. Or so it seems.

One exception: any team playing the JV lax team may expect an easy win.

As for this afternoon's game involving the real Lafayette lacrosse team, I'd be shocked if Coach Fisher is considering anything less than the toe-to-toe battles that she has seen in that last two games.

From what I've been reading about this year's team on this board, I'd expect they wouldn't be a lot worse than HC or LU.

Sure you do. You put the ball in the net. Sit back and enjoy!

Seriously, the rules regarding contact, clock management, stoppage of play, penalty enforcement, faceoff/draw, location of goal, field size, equipment - all very different. But when it comes down to the style of play, the fundamental difference between the two games has to do with the permissible depth of the sidewall and the pocket. Those couple inches mean everything:

I paid my money and I got no game! Evil or Very Mad

If the Pards win, I'll just leave it be. If they lose, I want a refund. Wink
Bogus Megapardus

Anna Raymond is between the pipes this afternoon.
Bogus Megapardus

Wilhelmsen has a first period hat trick. Which should surprise none.
Bogus Megapardus

Looks like the Gaels changed goalies after an early onslaught by the Pards.
Bogus Megapardus

For the Gaels, junior mid Jenna Tolzman seems to be their answer to Kirsten Wilhelmsen.
Bogus Megapardus

Hannah Davy scores free position to make it 9-4. (But I like it better when Davy gets a feed and does her slingshot. It's a beautiful thing to watch.)
Bogus Megapardus

Iona's Tolzman scores with :05 left in the period. Got to keep a close eye on her.

Pards up 9-5 at the half. Looks like we'll net more goals on this squad than did either HC or LU, but we'll allow more as well.
Bogus Megapardus

Since we're at the half, I am reminded that the JV team probably tried to play somewhere yesterday. I can't imagine that ended well.
Bogus Megapardus

Second half underway. Iona's freshman goalie is making saves.
Bogus Megapardus

Gaels have players from Florida, California, Colorado, Minnesota and British Columbia, in addition to the traditional northeastern corridor.
Bogus Megapardus

Teams exchanging FP goals. I wish WLax would adopt the MLax rule of continuing play after a penalty until the ball hits the ground.
Bogus Megapardus

Pards maintaining a lead, but not adding to it. I just hope nobody gets too comfortable.
Lafalum

12-6 the game seems under control. Seems like Fisher is staying with one goalie this time!
Bogus Megapardus

I wish I had video. My guess is Iona is playing very aggressively trying to keep pace with Pards' speed: Lafayette has eleven free position shots to just one for Iona. That's a huge stat disparity where you don't want to be on the wrong side.
Bogus Megapardus

Hat tricks now for Davey and Novick, in addition to Wilhelmsen. Pards up 14-6 about midway through the second.

I don't know the situation with Allie Abacherli, who had been the starter. If it's performance, then so be it. If it's injury, then we might see Abacherli return later in the season. I just don't know.
Bogus Megapardus

Kudos to the Gaels' freshman goalie, Samantha Tyo - it looks like she actually saved a Kirsten Wilhelmsen free position shot. That's no easy feat.
Bogus Megapardus

15-7 lead with 8 min to play should be enough, but I'd rather Alison Fisher not take her foot off the gas, just the same.
Bogus Megapardus

Gaels are collecting yellow cards as they try furiously to mount a comeback.
Bogus Megapardus

Looks like Fisher took her foot off the gas at about 5:00, which has led to a 4 goal flurry by the Gaels.
Bogus Megapardus

Congratulations to Lafayette lacrosse for its 16-11 win over the Iona Gaels.

Three games remain until PL play begins. I suspect Lafayette will be favored in two of them but the third - Villanova - might be more difficult (though the Wildcats are winless to date). But first things first: the Pards must turn right around and travel to Central Connecticut for a 1:00 PM start on Saturday. NEC Front Row will stream the game.

Just got out of a meeting - missed it.   We have a team with a winning record again !   Nice job girls and Coach.

Villanova appears to be a lot weaker than last year. Lost 10-6 to Bucknell at home and blown out by Cornell and Navy.  Reasonable chance for an LC win. As for Central CT, they lost by double digits to Iona.  Nuff said.

Taking *nothing* for granted, 137. Stats were mostly balanced except for Lafayette's huge edge in FPs. I have concerns about Iona's three minute, 4-goal run at the end of the game. Nova could ignite at any moment, and CConn certainly isn't going to roll over. But a win is a win and I'll take this one gladly.
