Yale Prediction Thread

I am a little confused as to whether Curley suffered a concussion vs. Penn or not.  The following from Paul Reinhard's writeup in today's Mourning Crawl:

"...the tests were all clear and he was feeling OK today [Sunday].  Actually, his back was bothering him more than his head."

http://www.mcall.com/sports/colle...folo.7035838sep28,0,1612116.story

What does "tests were all clear" mean?  At no point in the article does Reinhard come out and say that Curley suffered a concussion.  Speaking of clear, this suddenly isn't.

Well unless the school announces officially what happened via an injury report, its hard for a columnist to say exactly what the injury was due to medical confidentiality and the like.  If he wasnt officially concussed he probably at least got his bell rung.
carney2

No one seems to grasp the intent of this thread so I'll start.

I'm beginning with one of my curmudgeonly rants.  I am not happy with the "If Curley, Lafayette 21-13.  If O'Neil, Yale 14-3."  This isn't a menu at a Chinese restaurant.  Pick somebody, dammit.  Are the other 55 or whatever on the traveling squad not showing up?  Did the defensive bus get hijacked in Norwalk?

Lafayette wins in a defensive struggle.

Not a lot of games played, but this series goes back almost 100 years, and the Pards have yet to record their first “W.” The Curse lives! Weather permitting however, I will be in attendance and that, I am certain, should be enough to ward off the Ivy Axis of Evil. If things are particularly dicey in the 4th quarter I shall burn Pard94 in effigy and loose my basset hound on that mangy bulldog.  If we win I take full credit for defeating the forces of evil.  If we lose, it's The Curse.

I shall also end with a curmudgeonly rant.  I do not understand all the liver bile being wasted on the Quackers, their fans and, can you believe it?!!, their band.  Then there's Villanova.  Villanova?!!!  What, did we play them in the 19th century?  What's to hate?  Curmudgeon or not, I seem to be the most even tempered guy around here.  I hate only the ChickenSquawks - and them for only about 7 days each year.  I truly want them to go 10-1 every year.  EVERY year until they drop football in frustration over the ONE.

Penn people act like it's their God given right to beat us at everything and get pretty nasty when it doesn't happen. Easily my least favorite Ivy. I also "hate" Army...Over time they have had the most obnoxious and rude fans and I've seen them resort to plenty of cheap shots not only on the football field but Soccer...heck Baseball as well. One of my favorite rites of early December is watching Navy spank them.

I won't predict anything. I know nothing about Yale.

As George Carlin would have said, "Who knows, maybe they're right."

Frank was interviewed on ESPN Radio today.  Some of what I remember:

Curley is both "day to day" and "doubtful for Saturday."  Expects that everyone will use caution and hold him out of this one.  Yes, those are essentially three different answers to the same question.  I guess you pick the one you like.  Sounded to me however, like Curley will not play.

The offense is practicing with both O'Neil and Quilling.  Starter will be determined via practice performance.  He expects that O'Neil has the inside track because of all the reps Quilling missed with his injury.  He expects both to play on Saturday.  QB switches in mid stream are unFranklike, so we'll have to see how this works out.

He sounds as if he is still a big Quilling fan.  Pointed out that, in his opinion, the 1st half performance vs. Lehigh was more the result of bad support than any serious shortcomings on Quilling's part.

No other words on injuries except a comment that he is looking forward to the day that everyone will be healthy and on the field at the same time.

Said that the offense lost its spark and the tackling was poor at the beginning of the 2nd half vs. Penn.

Lots of other stuff, but not much seemed to have any bearing on Saturday's game, so it left my head  about as fast as it entered.

Ya, the local affiliate of ESPN radio does a local show from 5-7 and they have Frank and Andy Coen on every week.

What he said.

Lafayette's media day is Tuesday and they track Frank down at that event and broadcast the "interview" same day.  Lehigh's media day is Wednesday and they get Coen for Wednesday evening.

Stripe was held out for one week as a precautionary move due to a concussion.  Paul Reinhard says that he is "probable" for Saturday at Yale.

With 3 days to go, the chance of rain in West Haven on Saturday is listed at 70%.

Agreed.  I will muddle through any weather you can name at home games, but will not travel to downstate CT to do it.  Thank God for LSN.

Hey Hick, welcome to the board. Looks as though you very well maybe getting our 2nd string QB so I think Yale will more than hang with us. Do you have a website similar to this one where you guys might be talking about the game?
Hickory Slickery

Yes Ivy league sports board, but they get to politcal on the darn thing.Lose focus on common sense isssues.Enough of that, this Yale team is real green 14 new starters. But feel they will improve as the season goes on.
Pards Rule

Hickory, are u buying a round at Michangelos if Pards win??
Pard94

OK. So I was just reading soem stuff over on the Yale board. First of all, don't let Hickory Slickery fool you. He's predicted that Yale will "run all over Lafayette" this week and will win 24-10. More importantly some of there fans and detractors have made comments suggesting that Yale's O-line is weak. If that is the case then I like our chances even if Curely's on the sideline. I think our Defense is excellent. I think Paulson and Legerrio could wreak havoc on a weak O-line. If O'Neil can just "manage" the game, hand off to one of our two dozen, tailbacks, maybe throw some short range passes into the flat or over the middle, I think we could be OK. For these reasons I'm going with the following prediction...

Lafayette - 10
Yale - 7
Lafalum

I like our chances to "make history" Our O-line takes over in second half!!
Lafayette 20 Yale 7

Pards 16-13 in a game that sets offensive FB back a few decades.

I say let the kid throw it deep. The Yalies are probably expecting us to pull our horns in. Let's surprise em early!
carney2

Dare I say it - 94 and I agree again.  This is not one of the great Yale teams.  The O-line may be their biggest problem, but the O hasn't shown all that much thru two games.  Our D should be able to handle them, and that is key because Yale's D looks decent.  Just how decent is still a question because Georgetown and Cornell are not exactly offensive juggernauts.  With Curley out and rain predicted, their job suddenly becomes a little easier.  I would think that they stack the box against a Lafayette run game that has not shown much, albeit against two superior defenses in Penn and Liberty.  They will probably say "If your untested sophomore QB can beat us, so be it.  We don't think so."

Defensive struggle with mistakes/turnovers determining the winner.  O'Neil and/or Quilling can't take risks and/or do anything stupid.  Tavani and Fein need to stay basic and the basics need to work.  A real test for the Lafayette O-line.  What did Vince Lombardi say:  "I don't care if they know what we're going to do.  We're going to make it work."  Well, something like that.
carney2

Saturday's weather forecast for West Haven seems to be deteriorating.  The latest:

"Showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the lower 70s. South winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Chance of rain 80 percent."

I need to make an attendance decision by tonight.  As of now it will be "no.'

Actually many great football teams have the "Here's what we're going to do, try and stop us" mentality...Is there really any magic in what Colgate does year after year? You get good players who execute..that's what it's about. Joe Pa goes from being a genius to a senile old man in a weekend because what is "Classic Penn State football" when they are running it up on Temple becomes "boring, simple and predictable" when Iowa comes to town. We do the same thing on this board...and they do it on the Lehigh board...etc...Lost in all of this is the better teams usually win. Yes...the Liberty game was "winnable"....but I'm in no rush to play them again. Are you?

You play 11 football games all year...They are EVENTS. I can't get behind this "manage the game" thing...If the guy has things he can do let's see them. He's the QB. He's not a freshman. You don't play QB to manage the game...And if we do "manage the game" (God I hate that phrase more every time I say it...John Leone is going to use it 10 times in the pre-game show alone!) and we lose we'll be lamenting how conservative and predictable our offense was. When it comes to college QB...I don't get too caught up in experience. He's either good, or he isn't. Kirchoff went backward his second year as a starter, Ron Powlus looked so good the first time he stepped on the field they were talking about how many Heismans he was going to win...and we know how that story ended. Marco Glavic went right to attacking the first time they put him on the field and he delivered in a big way over Princeton.

Let O'Neal run the offense. let's get this monkey off our backs!
TheRock90

This game will be won by whoever runs the ball the best. Our O-line looked better against Penn than they did against Liberty but still not up to our standard. This is a show me week for them.

Oh yeah, in anticipation of being there in person, I read up on the Yale Bowl rules.  No backpacks or duffel bags, so be careful how you transport your "more crap" into the stadium.

It's not that bad... bring a wide umbrella, wrap you cushion in plastic, put a seat back on top of the cushion and you will be dry as a bone. Solid shoes is a wise idea in case of puddles.

Yale Bowl actually had numbered sections and tiered ticket prices. With these empty staiums you can walk yourself into any section really. Fordham  is the most difficult however.

Hey guys, yah even worse news. Our Fastest wr maybe out for the rest of the year. Our starting center is out with a leg injury. No experience on the

That prediction was made before I knew what the injury updates are.We have a chance if we keep our Defense on the field the whole game.

Didja go??? I LOVED being able to be next to the players at half outside the locker room and listening to the coaches give them their charges for the second half. AND I even got to talk to Tavani at half too. He was so calm & collected at half just leaning against the plastic barrier in front of the locker room door and let his assistants do the halftime bidding.
