Its a GREAT weekend of college lacrosse - my kids will stop watching only long enough to play in their own games.  To the marketing types at LC think about all the free brand exposure we get from an up and coming sport if we devote the right resources to supporting it.

As Bogie points out the 12.7 limit from biggest D1 to smallest really levels the playing field for recruits and trust me they know a Patriot League education will get them a lot further than one from Nebraska.

If you want to see something special, turn on ESPNU right now and watch Albany's Lyle Thompson #4.

On the Albany-Cornell post game show, Quint Kessenich just said the Great Danes have "ACC quality athletes." Confused

I love ya Quint, but no. I'm sorry. They have "Albany quality athletes." It's not always all about the ACC, all the time, Quint. SMH.

Congrats to the Great Danes on a terrific win. And that lumbering, coast to coast score by 240 lb. Linebacker-turned-Goalie Blaze Riorden was a sight to behold.

Hopkins is destroying grossly-overrated Virginia at the half, 13-2. The Cavaliers are proving why they had no business being in the tournament.

EDIT - Hopkins Hopkins 19, Virginia 7 Final.  Maybe I have to eat a lacrosse ball, but I still think Virginia had no business being in the NCAA Tournament.  Even with all unforced turnovers by Hopkins today, Virginia was completely out played and outclassed.

Gate vs. UNC at 5:15 on ESPNU.  I think Gate will win.

UVA showed they had no business being in tourney let alone getting seeded and home game.  Colgate played well but not enough weapons to take down heels.  Had to turn sound off as the shilling for the ACC was getting to be a bit much.   Am a Denver and Albany fan from here out.  Should be fun.

I hadn't thought of it from that perspective before. Virginia is obviously a very good team. However, there should be some penalty for being the worst team in an extremely good conference.

Now we'll probably watch them match a run to Memorial Day weekend.

. . . or not.  Razz

I wrote off Hopkins about a month ago, but obviously I was a bit premature.

I'd love to see Albany turn Syracuse's self-anointed "New York's College Team" moniker on it's head.

Maybe a bet between college presidents - if Albany faces Syracuse in the finals (which can happen) and Albany wins, Albany gets dibs on the whole "New York's College Team" thing.

Two (out of four) games left in the NCAA tournament that are worth watching. Albany vs. Notre Dame, Saturday, May 16 at 3:00 PM in Denver (ESPNU) and Hopkins vs. Syracuse, Sunday, May 16 at 12:00 PM in Annapolis (ESPN2).

Albany could advance here. Albany has shown that they can win without dominating on faceoffs. They're better than most give them credit for, especially on defense. Lyle Thompson is the offensive key for the Great Danes. He's just amazing - Lyle is the best player in the tournament.

Hopkins trashed Virginia in the first round. Syracuse is a much better team than Virginia, but Syracuse struggled against UNC, Colgate, Albany and Duke. That aside, Syracuse probably will take out Hopkins in close one but I think Albany will give Notre Dame a run, especially if ND is overconfident.

As for the other games - UNC vs. Maryland and Ohio State vs. Denver - you might as well go out and mow the lawn instead. Final Four prediction: Albany vs. Denver and North Carolina vs. Syracuse. Seriously, Albany could take the whole thing but they probably won't. North Carolina will. But no lacrosse ball ingestion if I'm wrong.  Not even with a hollandaise glaze and a sriracha dip on the side.

So Hopkins edges Syracuse in a thriller and Denver wins the possession game over Ohio State. Albany Great Danes hung with Notre Dame throughout (including the lightning delay) but even Lyle T. can't be at both ends of the field. I was really rooting for Albany. The surprise of the weekend was Maryland doubling up UNC. I really though North Carolina would take it all.

Shows you what I know.

Now it's Notre Dame vs. Denver and Maryland vs. Hopkins. Both games next Saturday at the Linc in Philly, with the final on Monday. I'll throw rational predictions out the door (I've been wrong so far) and just go by gut. I have no love for Maryland and I know next to nothing about the University of Denver (outside of its recent Tierney-led lax teams). I tend to like Notre Dame in football (because I'm Catholic) but the Irish have no discernible lacrosse tradition (they were a club team until the 1980s, and a pretty bad one at that). Hopkins is the lax tradition standard-bearer.

Even though Hopkins joined the Big 10 for lacrosse (a decision I hate), and Hopkins "cheats" by maintaining Division I lax while everything else on campus is D-III (shameful for a school its size, wealth and stature), I'll go with Hopkins for the win.

Our house will be rooting for Trevor Baptiste and Denver but wont be disappointed if Hopkins or Terps win.  No love loss here for ND.

I was disappointed by JHU's move to the B1G, but I completely understand it.  With limited at-large bids available, it made sense to secure another avenue to the tournament . . . and it paid off in the first year in the conference.

As for being in D-III in other sports, I agree that there is no reason for JHU to be in D-III.  It is bigger than Bucknell and Lehigh and has a $3.4B endowment (according to Wiki).  A school with that profile should be in D-I.

I know several people (including me) have mentioned in the past that JHU would be a very good fit in the PL.  However, we probably shouldn't hold our breath.

Not to change the topic but to build off it, has anyone heard anything about the new PL Commissioner? Seems like recruiting additional members would be a priority.

Femovich is out at the end of July, correct?  Tom Odjakjian ('76) still seems like the perfect candidate.
