Pards Rule - it looks as if eminent domain will not be necessary. Apparently the college already owns all the buildings (including Campus Pizza) that are going to be razed.

Click here for a look at the proposed layout.

I know nothing about it, but it seems to me that Campus Pizza would remain where it is, except it will be in a new building ("Building 2") with student housing in the upper floors.

Also I recall that the original Dan Weiss master plan calls for underground parking in the footprint where Watson Courts now sit (SW corner of McCartney Street and Clinton Terrace). No big loss there - IMHO Watson Courts are the very worst of Lafayette's housing inventory.

Agreed but back in my day (1980-84) they were the bomb and everyone wanted to live there! Shows you what 35 years will do to a place. Anyways, I dont see a diner speced out? If so, I would propose it to be on the parcel where the Gulf station sat across from Wawa. Thats the ONLY reasonable place. It looks like they are retaining some of the buildings that exist (maybe LC doesnt own those?) which is nice in an incorporation aspect to integrate the new with the old. I think it will look sterile to say the least coming in there and bulldozing and putting up the equivalent of a New Urbanism complex. That would defeat the purpose and tradition I submit. I would like to see the bookstore incorporated in the Building 2 with Campus Pizza - I can see an adjoining layout and then incorporating a Mojo coffee shop in there also. I recall the parking garage concept for Watson Courts area. Do I see in this plan where Sigma Nu will be demolished? Does the admin read these suggestions?

Just a note on Watson Courts, you now have to sign a waiver to live there that says you will not sue the college due to the asbestos in the buildings. What does that tell you?

That is pathetic.  Alison, what is the plan?  Kids will sign the waiver forever.  This is inexcusable IMHO.

The plan is to raze Watson Courts. That's been the plan unless something changed recently.

They should, for several reasons. First, they are not safe, they look terrible inside, but that land could be used differently to increase the student housing density.

Good idea: is there enough room over there to construct a larger building as opposed to replacing Watson with dorm of the same size?

So anyone have better ideas to use the money earmarked for an elevator?

Do you mean a bigger residential building?

Presumably, the South Lawn Residence Halls will house more students than Watson Courts. South Lawn construction is supposed to enable demolition of the Courts.

https://facilitiesplanning.lafayette.edu/campus-master-plan-2009/

Remember that several things have already changed about the plan (like the location of the new life sciences building and the relocation of staff to the heart of Easton).

Absent other changes, Phase Three of the Campus Master Plan addresses replacing Watson Courts with academic buildings and a subterranean parking garage after new residence halls are constructed. The following quote is part of a larger plan, which calls for the creation of additional student housing (i.e., South Lawn Residence Halls) and new academic buildings (Watson Courts Academic Buildings) right next to said garage (Watson Courts Parking Deck).

Quote:
The Watson Courts Parking Deck will be a two level garage tucked into the hillside at the current Watson Courts site. This garage will provide parking for 288 cars close to the center of the campus, and
by integrating the deck with the topography, the plaza created by the roof of the garage will be at the same elevation as the east end of the Quad.

YES!

BPard's post addresses this question, at least based on the current master plan.

You could probably a bigger residential building just within the current footprint since the Courts are only two stories tall and have a fair amount of open space in between.  My recollection is that there are no more than 24 units, which means a maximum of 96 beds at four per unit.

If a new dorm was built above the planned garage, there would be room to go much bigger. You could probably put two moderately sized buildings on the combined footprint of the Courts and the current parking garage.

Plans for Going Up On McCartney Street mention the need for new housing due to the planned demolition of Watson Courts.

The proposed zoning change makes sense. We'll see if the city goes for it.

Plans include a new wellness center. Could this be the 24/7 facility that Lafalum has called for?

I wouldn't expect the zoning change to get too much pushback.  Buildings 55 feet tall would be pretty similar in height to McKeen and Gates, which are both four stories tall, so there wouldn't be a drastic change in scale along McCartney Street.

Also, the rendering shows the southernmost of the two buildings (orange) wrapping around Campus Pizza.  Save Campus Pizza!

Right, because without Campus Pizza you will reduce the dance floor square footage on the hill by half!  Razz

That just tells you how much times have changed.  Back in my day (1984-88 ), there was no dancing at Campus Pizza.  It was just a service counter and a bunch of booths and tables.  No frills!
