I drove down but was looking forward to the archive, listening to Mike's commentary., info on injuries, etc.  This is ridiculous!  WTF!  Both baseball games are already archived, so I guess there was in fact no stream of the spring game.

Davis was pretty good, mobile choosing run over pass several times, pretty accurate when he threw. McCrum threw into triple coverage, threw high; disappointing to me, but maybe others saw it differently.  Hope the freshmen are on campus this summer.

PR was at practice last night and, based on this morning's column, was expecting to see Kern. Not only did we not see him on the field, we didn't see him at all.

We have so few OLmen, our suspended guy, Kevin, played as much as anyone and more than say Murphy.  No lie- we had 6 OL dressed today inc. Kev.  Nelson is off the roster. Welcome freshmen!

They held out a lot of key people - Wadsworth, Giudice, Brown, no clue if injured.  Guys like YT, Tre, Earle, Cam hadnt practiced.

We used an HB today, only Eisler as Monteyne, physically impressive, didn't dress.

Meriwether could be fun to watch this year. CJ didn't stand out today IMO, then again it's not like he had a lot of daylight to run to.

Nice to see Chris Granjean make a pair of grabs.  There were a lot of drops, a slew of INTs, some may have been receivers' fault.  Mrazek made a nice grab, no surprise and Rocko, too.  Reedy, the only TE dressed, had several catches.

One assessment we can make without hesitation - Bissell is outstanding. All but 1 line drive KO reached the EZ and punts were deep spirals that turned over.

Some guys who stood out IMO - JJ Conn, Powe, Dante, Phil had a real nice pass breakup, Joey. Rose didn't dress, Lamb played a lot, high hopes remain there.  Breedlove looks in great shape. Add Giudice, Barnett (not dressed), Labudev and Rothrock to Beau, Dante, Breedlove, Chuma et al and the cup runneth over for this year.  Played a D where Dante stood off the LOS, 3-4.

The long snapper who is not on the roster, #96, was dressed! Figure that one out.

I'd be hard pressed to name a recruit not there. Was impressed with size. Stood behind Major and Ryan in the concession line, these guys are legit 6-2, 6-3.  There was a mystery kid (Hah!) with several known recruits who I guess couldve been O'Malley or Turk, dark hair, 6-2, strong build but wearing a Cardinal Mooney sweat shirt. IDK. Poster gopards is working on it.

While lots of talented players didn't see action today (and the QB spot is far from decided), there was great spirit, enthusiasm, discipline. Encouraging!

Let's Go Rangers!!!

Good stuff Andy.  Agree that the QB's as a whole struggled, but I will say that they had very small windows to throw.  The D was in perfect position all day and didn't blow coverages.  On many plays every reciever had a defender running with him stride for stride. Clear the D is well coached and well prepared.  Hoping for a better day from the O but not too concerned just yet.  The QB competition is wide open and hope the freshman come in ready to compete.

Thanks,FT.  If Kern is ok and when in shape, his and Cam's return will give a whole new OL outlook. Looking for early contribution from Pyne, too.

Gopards - maybe V. Gentile, a sr this year for Coach Amil. Being recruited by a few good academic schools....

So the defense was ahead of the offense which should surprise nobody. That always seems to be the case in the spring. However . . .
    •  Should the lack of RB reps be more concerning than Reinhard makes it out to be?

    •  Will Garrett start a freshman at OG or even center, or does he wait to plug a new kid into the OL?

    •  Where did the rumor come from about Josh Davis not being able to "pick up" the Tavani/Fein offense? Could it have been that Davis used his legs in practice/scrimmage sooner than the former staff would have liked? Reinhard seems to imply this, I think. Maybe the knock on Davis is undeserved.

    •  The number of injured/non-participating players doesn't seem excessive compared to some of the last 5-7 seasons at this point but it's still a concern - if we are to believe that Garrett is not holding anybody out because they've already earned a spot.

    •  With suspensions, graduations and unforseen circumstances, the Lafayette roster has 8 upperclassmen OL (including one senior and two sophomores who have never played). Five freshman will join them later. By my count, Lehigh has 13 upperclassmen OL, Colgate has 10 upperclassmen OL, Holy Cross has 12 upperclassmen OL. Bucknell also has 8 upperclassmen OL (plus 4 freshmen coming in). Why are we always at the bottom of the PL class when it comes to OL depth?

I watched about half of the game. I did not see anything scheme or personnel wise that gave me any comfort regarding a running game.

I didn't make it down given the weather.   After all, the joy of the spring game to me is sitting in the stands, eating some snacks and enjoying an afternoon in the sunshine.

Have to say I was also counting on watching the stream........but

Interesting to see the reports for those who are braver and hardier than I.   Based on that and PR's article seems the offense may be a challenge this year.   6 OL (excluding KZ?) did I hear read that correctly?   Hopefully a lot held out as a pre-caution.   Sounds like WR and TE will be as expected on the depth chart, but otherwise the competition is wide open.   Defense sounds like it is getting pretty well defined.  Are we still running the 425?  I hate that defense, but maybe that's why I am not a coach Smile

 A couple of quick notes.

Not sure the defensive scheme continues as 4-5-2.  I suspect it will be variation of same based on our personnel.

#10 has clearly emerged among DBs.  I observed this at practice, and I'm not at all surprised at his play.  He is a neat  fit in the middle of field at S, if in fact he defends and covers TE consistently.

#3 is a strong defender, leader, and we have to build around him, so he can make plays.

It continues to appear that we have depth in the defensive backfield. Cover, cover, and tackle......

I said that #12 JD had requisite footwork skills, and looked a step ahead behind center at the practice I visited.  The spring game confirmed my observations.

I'm less concerned about total OL count than building quality depth.  The total number (13, not including future additions) doesn't mean a whole lot if you can't plug and play. That is the key for this staff going forward.  Your practices must be competitive in the trench.

Guys being held out of practice right now is smart business.  The guys I observed not on the field were working out.   I plan to look much more closely at whose on the field Aug. 20th.

Base D is 4-3

OL participating in spring game:

Marotti
Bradley
Donnelly
Murphy
Grieser
Zateveski (reportedly suspended for season)

Not participating:

Smith (coming off injury (surgery?), I was told he played with bad shoulder last season)
Raysor (on crutches)

Not observed:

Kern

#10's development was undoubtedly slowed by knee surgery a few years back. I agree he has the tools to be effective but the problem last year appeared to be blown coverages with numerous receivers getting behind our DBs and our guys looking confused.

Wow so 5 healthy and active OL.   Assuming Cam/Kern play, it would appear at least one spot could be taken by incoming recruit.   I'm not sold on pyne, but that's why 4 weeks in august will be interesting

I'm hoping we're substituting our league-best coverage for wins this year! Smile

Lafayette College has   the worst online streams  in the PL.Watching the road games on others' streams conclusively proves that.

LSN‏ @WatchLSN
Internet issues at Fisher Stadium caused problems with the live streaming of today's @LafColFootball spring game. Our apologies.////

Problem is, it's time after time after time.

Re Saturday's performance - Coach JG calling plays. Seemed a quicker pace, hopefully we'Ve seen the last of the former painstakingly slow offensive delivery. Defense will keep us in games, get Brandon back, why shouldnt we have the best D in the league.  It could happen!
