Lehigh's Brandon Alston has two years of eligibility and will rcv his Lehigh degRee in three years this May. Looks like he will be playing elsewhere as he tweeted "Thank you Lehigh for the experience and degree. I will forever cherish the memories. I will play two years of basketball at another University."

Similarly, the Pards Monty boykins is openly soliciting for a school to play his final season of hoops while getting a master's degree. "After three seasons at Lafayette college I'll be looking for a grad school to complete my fourth year of eligibility."

This loophole is being seriously abused. Good luck to both players. I hope the Lafayette coaching staff puts an equal amount of effort in finding a landing spot as the player exhibited in trying to get on the floor this season."

Totally agree with that last sentence.

We have all this energy on the football threads regarding new team attitude and enthusiasm, better recruit talent, higher level of fan interest... just a total reinvigoration.  And yet, MBB/FOH just plods along as we accept our plight--we can barely give away scholarships to players nobody else in the PL would even want IMO.  It has to stop.  Why not now?  This is an institution of higher learning.  Are we this stupid?

I think I said this in the football thread a while ago, players going to class and graduating are a given. Scholarships were supposed to elevate our talent level, not make it easier to recruit the same kids we would have gotten anyway.

According to the Verbal Commits list (http://verbalcommits.com/transfers/2017), Dom Cristiano and Jimmy Panzini will both transfer.

Not sure if this is breaking news to those "in the know", but it just popped up on VC within the last day or so.

Scholarship or no scholarship, would you want to ride the bench of a team this bad and going nowhere?  No thanks.  Life's too short.

In addition to Alston, it looks like Matt Holba is transferring from Lehigh and a member of the coaching staff is moving on as well

As of now Holba is a rumor. Rowland is moving on.
Between injuries and transfers Reed has taken major hits to the front court over the last 3 yrs.As of now going into next yr with 10 or possibly 9 schollie players.

Men's basketball banquet this weekend. Only two seniors.

We may find out where Monty will surface next season.  Word is he has  few offers from schools on Long Island, a couple in the Midwest, and one on the West Coast.

We know where Nick is going. He will miss graduation as he begins his training to become a Navy Seal.  Special player, special guy.

Good Luck to both.

Boykins is visiting Penn State:

And interested in Pittsburgh.

Between outgoing transfers (five at last count) and decommitments, Pitt has four or five spots still open for this fall.    Since there are very few available players left - and Pitt likely doesn't want to give a scholarship to a mediocre HS senior just to help fill its roster - I wouldn't be at all surprised if Boykins gets an offer.

It seemed like a leap but I see your point. It's a one-year plug-in with minimal risk and for Boykins a year at a great school.
Pitt is becoming a popular school for Lehigh Valley students who want the university experience in an urban setting. Plus the in-state cost is around $32,000 annually.
Penn State's hold on the area remains strong. As a non-local I've never really understood that.
Pitt should have been in the Big 10 anyway.
The real mess is how the northeastern big schools never all got together. The tradition of the Eastern independent and certain school rivalries prevented that.
After all, if Rutgers can get into the Big 10, anything can happen.

Very little common ground back then for the northeastern bigs. Rutgers wasnt one. PSU had no use for Pitt and neither liked Cuse. BC had little historical connection. Army and Navy were bigs then but faded back. Temple wasnt even in the discussion. There was some movement towards a conference but PSU wanted no part of it. Big East tried but by then Bball was driving the bus.
A shame really as I think that group made sense and could have succeeded.

Penn State, Pitt, Temple, Syracuse, Boston College, Army, Navy and Rutgers would be a solid football conference now.
WVU was part of the old Big East football lineup as was Virginia Tech. Miami was there briefly. Maybe others I've forgotten. Louisville too.
UConn didn't play BCS football until about 20 years ago, it too was in the Big East. Nor did UMass, until later.  That UMass venture has not gone well. Buffalo was also 1AA, now FBS. A former Lafayette opponent.
If only Army and Navy had gone to 1AA, what a conference the Patriot League could have been.

All of this depends on where you're sitting, I suppose. Pitt never had a chance at the B1G. With Penn State in the conference, they bring absolutely nothing to the table economically or demographically. Besides they cannot put fannies in the seats for the conference's marquis sport - football. As for the eastern all-sports conference that was being kicked around in the late 80s, the Pitt people agree with Rich - Paterno killed it. The Penn State people will tell you that it was Pitt and Syracuse who did it in.  They supposedly refused to bottom feed by stepping onto a basketball court with the Nittanies four times per year. Take your choice.

Some will recall that Penn State missed by one vote of becoming a Big East member in 1982.    Needed 75% of the votes.   Got 5 of the 8 - with Nova, St. Johns, and Georgetown voting against them.   Had PSU been in the league, talk might have started earlier about expanding the league to include football - and PSU might have signed on before there was a Big Ten offer in front of them.   By the mid-80's, Pitt was a Big East member and VA Tech, Miami, West Virginia, Temple, and Rutgers were all looking for a football league.

True 137. I hoped PSU would get in but SJU and all were adamantly opposed to adfing a football first PSU. They wanted a Bball centric conference. Shortsighted (well given our hindsight). Wpuld have been one hell of a conference in both sports.

Watch the 30 for 30 doc on the Big East for more on this subject.  It is very well done.  The film is basketball centric, but talks about the Penn State issue and how the politics of the day killed the conference folks are mentioning here.
