I have a problem with disclosing a Marquis Scholar publically once enrolled.
Why should these students get kudoes or special mention once an ordinary student. Shouldn't they all be judged by the same metric. (Dean's List, Phi Beta Kappa, etc) I could care less , once enrolled,  that  an athlete was all state, its what he does on the court or playing field today and tomorrow at Lafayette that counts, the same goes for his academic qualifications. I often wonder if the professor feels extra pressure to give the Marquis Scholar a benefit of the doubt in his classroom. If anything the athletic scholarship kid has more to crow about than an ordinary admit since he's done more and there were academic requirements for him to meet at Lafayette that others don't have to.

I have a proposal, why shouldn't good students who never got a Marquis Scholarship be eligible once enrolled......and for that matter why shouldn't a good athlete who walked on and did well get and athletic scholarship ( could especially be done by the non-counter sports). Both scenerios are imposible at Lafayette.

I put little faith in all the reports and articles.  They still claim our football recruits receive full scholarships and we all know that the Patriot League does not allow football scholarships.  Sometimes a player, coach, parent, etc will refer to any aid they receive from a school as "scholarship" money.  They do this for a number of reasons (talked about it before, no need to bring up dead topics).

The basketball reports-while not always accurate - tend to be far more accurate than those for football - at least for the fall signees.    First of all, these players are followed a lot more closely by the scouting services than are FCS football players.    More importantly, virtually no player will commit in the Fall without a full scholarship, knowing that a good H.S. season may earn them a scholarship from someone.

From a fan's perspective, I'm not sure it is such a big deal whether a player receives a basketball scholarship or a Marquis scholarship.  Sure it's nice to know but do you root for the players differently?  The expectations should still be the same, right?

Not a "big deal," but it is important since you get a hopefully qualified body on the roster without using up one of your athletic scholarships.

Yes, it's great if you can get a solid player with that sort of scholarship.    Of course the Marquis scholarship is only worth a fraction of what a basketball scholarship is worth, so normally you will only get players who had no athletic scholarship offers.   If a recruited athlete receives any need-based aid, however, he becomes a "counter".

This crap is way too complicated for me.  We need a siimple mind like KenZ to explain it all.

I'll give it a try. Basketball and Football are counter sports. If you are recruited and you get aid you count as one scholarship regardless of the amount of the award. So the NCAA for Men's basketball allows 13 counters. Lafayette gives 12 scholarships ( all full rides).
Every other sport can give partials, so we give the equiviliant of 8 full rides in FH not counting need based aid. Partials can then be given and combined with athletic scholarships. The NCAA max for FH And Soccer is 13 each I believe.
Women's basketball has 15 NCAA allowed and Lafayette gives 13. Again if you are recruited your aid is counted as one scholarship.

More for women than men?  Seems strange.

I've read too many reports and articles with incorrect information to put full trust in any service.  But you do follow this stuff more closely than I do so your experience is probably different than mine.

Plenty of incaccuracies in the spring.    Almost none in the fall signing period.    If a player "signs" in the Fall, it is  pretty certain that he has a full scholarship - except for the Ivy world of course.

I guess that would have to be true for schools such as ours since this is the only way you can commit to the college that early (it's before early decision applications are due).
