I was out and about and did not tune in until the second half with Lafayette up by 4. Sometime in the first 30 seconds of my viewing I determined that we were going to lose. Don't know how, but I was convinced. With 10 seconds or so remaining, we got a defensive rebound while down 3. I watched only to see how it would get screwed up. This is what it's come to - knowing that we are going to lose even when we are ahead; knowing that we cannot come back even when we have a chance. In the postgame interview Tammy did not look like a leader with answers. Hell, she didn't look like she had any valid questions.

It's funny, with about 8 minutes to go we were winning and the TV showed a shot of Navy's coach and one of their players who were talking and laughing. Not in a taunting way, you would just never know by looking at them that they were in a close game---they seemed to have no doubt they were going to win--even on the road without their leading scorer. We shot FIFTY PERCENT and lost. ARGH!!!!!
Tammy got caught with her pants down on that inbounds play---it was like we never imagined they might throw a screen at us and go for the home run--even though she obviously called a TO to set something up.
To Tammy's credit she did get Zavocki open for the final shot...but we know how it ends.
It's not like there weren't positives. "Vegas" had a really nice game...I gotta believe we can be doing more with her. Downey only had 1 TO in 19 minutes although they weren't pressuring her too much. Garner seemed determined to will her way to a victory.
Still...we played doggy do defense....FOr a while we were a great defensive team but they seemed to score whenever they were interested in doing so.
Navy mailed in about 30 minutes of this game--and when the clamps came down...As Carney said, you knew it was over. _________________ I bleed Maroon

Tough loss. We pulled out all the stops: cheerleaders, dancers, the leopard, Pep Band and the team came out very determined. The girls built about an 8 or 10 point second half lead before the turnovers and matador base line defense did them in. No one to blame but themselves. I feel badly for them.
Serawoky was fouled and went to the floor injured, second half. She came back gamely, but again hobbled off. Ice bag on the left knee.
I thought Navy looked very beatable, didn't realize till reading Maroon's post that they were minus their top scorer. Still they had an effective three point shooter in #24 and two guards #13 and 23 who were quicker than anyone on our side.
Maroon, you know way more than I about this stuff, but even I could see that Navy didnt have much of an inside presence and Amanda was open all game. Not that she'd drive to the hoop, not Amanda, but she sure was open to catch, turn and shoot. Was it me or did she not look all that interested in getting the ball? As you said she made some shots as well as four clutch free throws in a row. Man, she could have done more.

I caught the game on the tube--so there's no way I could tell her intensity. SHe's always been an enigma to me. I remember first seeing her and how she moved well for someone her size and that SUPER soft touch that few players her size have and I thought "wow, she could be a good one". But it just hasn't panned out. She's never been one to battle for rebounds like the undersized Garner and Wright and she seems more comfortable shooting from 15 feet than drop-stepping and out muscling anybody. But generally I agree, there's untapped stats in her.
Yeah, Navy was missing their leading scorer and rebounder. We shot great. THe stars were aligned.
I'm still ticked about that inbounds play. I guess if we played a zone on the press we risked chasing the ball for valuable seconds---still that play looked like Warner to Fitzgerald.
Certainly has been a tough first year for Serawoky, you gotta be excited about her potential.
Big-time kudos to the guy from the class of 2000 who contributed those unis.
Because these women seem to have no short-term memory regarding losses (that's a complement) I gotta believe there's at least one great game left for this team. I hope so anyway. _________________ I bleed Maroon

Done in by the defense, or the lack of it. The team came out of the locker room to start the second half fired up, opened up a 9 point lead with less than 10 minutes to play. By the 3:23 mark it was tied at 48. Navy then scored on its next 5 possessions and was fouled on its sixth and final possession. Four of the scores were on layups.
Amanda Smith should have had 30 points. Without Considine, Navy was using a 5'8" guard in the middle of it 2-3 zone. Unfortunately, our offense does not use a low post presence.
Navy had just 5 TOs. We had a less than normal 14 but Navy also had 8 steals.
Heard that Serowoky has a possible torn miniscus.
I believe Mr Sponaugle attends all the women's games, including the away games. Very dedicated fan.

Torn miniscus=surgery or not necessarily?
Glad you agree with me on Amanda, didnt get a chance to talk about it w/ you at the game. Low post or not, she's a good shooter and she was open all game to receive a pass around the foul line to turn and shoot. I dont know if she didnt want the ball or just got frustrated that they weren't passing it to her.

Have I mentioned before that this team has talent that just hasn't been properly developed?

While I feel I have a long ramble in me to write, I don't want to bite my tongue later. I'll just keep it to the following:
1)Tammy has been consistant. In her first year as a coach, she took out a potential 1,000 point scorer in the line-up toward the end of the season and replaced her with a freshman. While Garner is not a 1,000 potential, she is one of the few that can give us an offensive punch. I like Alex, but she is not ready to be a starter(this year). Yet, I can't wait to see her in the future!
2)I'm no athletic trainer, but I think putting Alex back into the mix yesterday was foolish. I'm sure most players would want to be on the floor, even with some pain. Alex, on the replay, was moving with a limp. She should have been removed immediately. For her sake, I hope her injury is minor.
3)Great call by Navy at the end of the game!!!!!
4)The black hole on the end of the bench is hard to get out of and easy to get into. Amanda Leone gets prize minutes one game, sinks two threes and we barely see her again. Lauren Jackson sighting was brief yesterday. McGorry starts the game, missed a box out on a rebound and is never seen again. The players are put into a position to play without making one mistake or they'll be hook faster than ...... (name your preference)
4) Maroon, we will be probably be writing these things again for the next two years.
Did I say I wasn't going to ramble?
GO PARDS!

1) If Leone can shoot threes like she appears to be able to based on the 6 minutes we saw her, than she needs more time. She's at least as fast as Zavocki, lord knows we need an outside game and well...I know she's a walk-on but I'm starting to think she may be of use (much respect to her and the many like her---giving up 20 hours/week to get 20 minutes of time/season.)
2) Going with Curious George's theme...Have I mentioned how ticked off I am with our backcourt situation? Next season we're looking at starting Downey and Jackson, with Jenkins and Leone also returnees. Hell...these girls could be superb for all I've seen of them--but that's the problem. X has indicated he believes that this years recruits will be guards, but I have to believe they'll need time to develop.
3) The league is loaded with super sophs... NOt that we aren't keeping pace (in terms of our sophomore class), I just wish more talent was graduating on the other teams.
4) I usually like to play devils advocate and argue the other side---but I can make no sensible case for keeping Tammy at this point. I'm worried that Fran has lost his magic, and he has a lot more credibility built up than Tammy. Both programs are a mess.
5) If we are truly running VBK's offense than Amanda Smith should get the ball on almost ever posession (A LA Matt Roberts). Except for the fact that we weave like something out of Hoosiers is about the only similarity right now.
6) Virgin seems lost in this whole thing--I gotta believe there's more stats in her too.
7) What in the world happened to Brooke Niquette? Is she hurt? I knew we wouldn't see much of her during her first year as I just don't have much respect for Vermont high school hoops---but I never would have dreamed she'd be a permanent benchwarmer.
You could feel Garner's intensity through the TV.
I can ramble.... _________________ I bleed Maroon

Our two known commits:
Alicia Manning 5-8 2 guard or swing (not the point) former teammate of Downey at Cardinal O'Hara, the number one ranked team in the country.
scout.inc lists her at 5-10 grades her a score of 80 and ranks her the #40 guard in the nation.
O'Hara sharpshooter Alicia Manning commits to Lafayette (Sep18)
Alicia Manning, a 5-foot-10 guard from Cardinal O'Hara High School in Springfield, Pa., vebally committed to Lafayette College, according to her club team director LInda Genther. Manning averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds for a 25-2 team that won the Catholic League Championship last season. She was selected to the All-Catholic Second Team. ////////
Samantha Jordan 5-11 guard/forward from Stonewall Jackson HS, DC area.
Lafayette had been following Jordan since last summer when the coaching staff saw her play in AAU competitions, Stonewall Jackson head girls basketball coach Nsonji White said.
Jordan also became familiar with the program through a friend of her father’s whose daughter was a freshman on the team......
A versatile player, Jordan averaged 11.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 4.2 steals per game last season in helping the Raiders go 25-1.
“Coach Smith said there wasn’t an athlete like Samantha in the Patriot League,” White said. “She gets to the basket and is long and lanky.”////
