Leopards Nab Two Men's Basketball Recruits in Early Signing Period
Point guard from California and forward from Oklahoma will suit up for the Leopards
Dec. 5, 2008
EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette men's basketball head coach Fran O'Hanlon has announced two commitments for the Class of 2013 that are set to join the Leopards in the 2009-10 season. The class includes a point guard from California and a power forward from Oklahoma.
Tony Johnson (Folsom, Calif./Folsom) is a 6-0, 170-pound guard in the midst of his senior season at Folsom High School in California under head coach Mike Wall.
Johnson led his team to the Sac-Joaquin section Division I championship title in 2007-08 with a 24-8 record, while being named the Most Outstanding Player in the championship game. He averaged 16.7 points, 3.6 steals, 3.4 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game as a junior for the Bulldogs.
In his 2006-07 season on the varsity squad, Johnson led his team to the Division I Section semifinals while being named to the All-Delta River League Team. In 2005-06, he was the team MVP and captain of his freshman squad that claimed the Delta League title with a 21-1 mark. He has also played with the AAU Team 94 under head coach Phil Handy.
"Tony is a true point guard who has showcased his leadership skills at Folsom," O'Hanlon said. "We will count on him to fulfill the same role with the Leopards."
Johnson currently maintains a 3.72 GPA and is considering Economics and Business as his field of study at Lafayette. He has volunteered for several community clean up projects and has served as a clinician for Folsom Youth Basketball, a not-for-profit athletic organization.
Athletic ability runs in the family, as Johnson's cousin Allison Brown of Plano, Texas, has recently signed to play volleyball at Presbyterian College. Johnson's former teammate at Folsom, Kyle Thomas '07 is currently playing for San Jose State.
Levi Giese (Tulsa, Okla./Union) makes his way to Lafayette, hailing from Union High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At 6-9, 210 pounds, Giese is a forward with excellent ballhandling and perimeter skills who looks to help lead coach Rudy Garcia's Union squad in 2008-09.
"Levi saw action in every game as a junior in helping Union to a very successful season," O'Hanlon said. "As a senior, his role will expand significantly this year as they look to continue their success."
On the AAU circuit, Giese averaged a double-double with his Basket of Dreams squad coached by Herb Suggs and Tracy Moore.
Giese currently holds a 3.97 unweighted GPA and a 4.75 weighted GPA while ranking in the top three percent of his graduating class. He plans to major in Economics and Business. Giese has volunteered through his church and taken two mission trips to Mexico where he helped build a church and a house.
Four of Giese's teammates have gone on to play Division I basketball with Lester Johnson and Nick Dennis of his AAU squad playing at Southern and Centenary, respectively. Justin Glenn and Derrick Lewis from his high school squad matriculated at Lipscomb and Texas A&M, respectively.
Season stats for Johnson: 17.3 pts per game, shot 54% , 3.8 assists, 3.1 reb., 90 steals, 81to, 81%ft
Giese: 11.9 pts per game, 7.5 rebounds, named to second team all-tournament. Had an inconsistent year from what I could tell. |
