Lafayette's freshman, Peter Daaleman, has decided to give up basketball! He will remain as a student at Lafayette.
Rather than putting my foot in my mouth and say something I will regret, I'll shake my head and sign off. |

So what's the story Refrider? Was he a project or expected to contribute this season? Does this open up another scholarship for next season? Give us the details. |

Peter was not a scholarship player, rather a recruited walk on. Word is his heart was not in it. On a positive note looks like Giese has game and will compete for time at the 3/4 spot. Willen is recovering rapidly from foot surgery and should be back at full strength well before the first game.
My bad, source on campus gave me bad data, he is a scholly and is planning to stay for the school year.

So we have freshmen class of 2 replacing our senior class of 1 (Brown). 7 sophmores with only one having some game (Willen) I still don't see how scholarships has helped this program. |

Its not the scholarships without which we would have no hope of ever being competitive. |

I'm puzzled. Maybe someone could clear up these two questions that I have:
1. I've read comments in the past that FOH has three scholarships each year that he has to use. No carryovers. If that is correct and if Daaleman wasn't a scholarship player, then that would mean he only gave out two scholarships this year. Can he now carry them over, or did he just throw away a chance to use a scholarship, or was Daaleman in fact a scholarship player (see below)?
2. Relative to #1, there were several articles in N.C. newspapers that specifically stated that he signed a national letter of intent, i.e that he received a scholarship (see examples below). So my question is: how certain is it that he did not have a scholarship from LC?

"at 6-10, Daaleman was a major defensive threat and usually an effective scorer inside all season for the Wildcats. He also caught the eye of several coaches last summer, playing scholastic league ball and with Bob MacKinnon's AAU team along with East classmate Will Pollit (who said Daaleman was "a great player, offensively and defensively" in AAU ball.) He signed his letter of intent to play at Lafayette last week, with a ceremony attended at ECH by teammates, coach Ray Hartsfield and his parents.
Others: Daaleman looked at Holy Cross and some other schools before narrowing his choices to Wofford ("small"), William & Mary ("nice school") and Lafayette ("I wanted to play up north.")
Why Lafayette, really? "When we started the while recruiting process, we were looking to get the right fit both academically and athletically. Coach (Fran) O'Hanlon came down in December I and visited there. What really did it was watching a practice. Everyone was so enthusiastic and committed. I could really see myself being part of that."
Most people here don't know: The Leopards were the last team in the Patriot League to offer full athletic scholarships . . . "

Or from the East Chapel Hill H.S. site: "Peter Daaleman signs letter of intent to play at Lafayette ... senior Wildcat Peter Daaleman signed his national letter of intent ..."
Also from the McCall blog: "there's joy galore in College Hill with the annoucement that 6-10 Peter Daaleman is part of the Leopards' 2013 scholarship class." |

So, if you give a kid a scholarship for a sport, and he/she enrolls and then says, you know what, I really don't want to play that sport any more, do they then forfeit their scholarship?
Can anyone help here? |

Under NCAA rules, if he has an athletic scholarship, LC would no longer have to honor the scholarship if he stopped playing the sport. I don't know if LC would voluntarily give him the scholarship until the end of the academic year or not.
Theoretically all athletic scholarships are only one year contracts anyway, but most higher-quality schools will not non-renew a player's scholarship if he has a good attitude and is doing OK academically. However, there are some coaches (e.g. Albany's Will Brown) who will cut a player loose if he's not performing well or if a better option comes along. |

for Bison 137
Unitil this year, it was 3 scholarships per year, use or lose it. That policy has now changed, the scholarship, if he had one gets carried forward. As to his, he will drop into the regular student pool for aid. I don't know whether that is applicable this semester or not. I would hope it applies this semester. A promise is a promise. |
