Unitil this year, it was 3 scholarships per year, use or lose it. That policy has now changed, the scholarship, if he had one gets carried forward. As to his, he will drop into the regular student pool for aid. I don't know whether that is applicable this semester or not. I would hope it applies this semester. A promise is a promise. |
and a contract is a contract if he did indeed sign a letter of intent. |

KIltedpard, I don't understand what point you are making with your last statement? |

meaning that if he agreed to come to play and now he is not, then he should lose the athletic scholarship. |

Edited my previous post, I was given bad data. He is staying in school for the balance of this school year, which is paid up by scholarship. Scholarships are re-upped annually. Other news Petkovich and Giese have the H1N1 flu and Visockas is still on crutches. |

So he does have a scholarship and is not playing? So essentially Fran has lost a scholarship in the process!!!! That's great. |

He will keep the scholarship for just this year. As stated above scholarships are renewed annually and are usually only pulled if someone quits the teams or is involved in breaking team rules or the law. His scholarship this year is tied up with him no matter what, but it will be free for next year. |

That's better than than losing it forever but Fran has still lost a player and the school has 50,000 dollars lost to it. |

Since this type of situation is rare, I had never looked closely at the wording of the National Letter of Intent before. Apparently the only thing the athlete has to do to meet his one-year commitment and get a 100% free ride is to attend the school. He is not required to even show up for a practice to keep his scholarship for that year. I'd like to see somewhat tougher terms unless a player quits due to some injury or serious personal issue.
I guess the only good news for FOH is that Daaleman was likely a project who was rarely going to get onto the floor this year anyway. |

This policy follows basic financial policy. If a student gets a financial aid grant, it's for the entire year. Don't think we need tougher policies, the coach needs to do a better job with recruiting and communicating with the student-athlete. Even if you strip the student's scholarship immediately, the coach can't use it until the next recruiting season anyway.
This happens more than you think. We just don't hear about it much in Patriot League basketball. |
