Frank's picks (he could not vote for his own team):
6. Georgetown "Improving"

Well, at least it wasn't bulletin board material. I don't know if "improving" to other PL coaches means 2-9 instead of 1-10.

T, sorry I missed this. Not aware of a change in Parker's status, he just wasn't mentioned by Coach.
How many recruits does Rivals show for us currently, if u have that? Thanks.
ESPN Insiders shows two receivers:
2009 Players Considering - Lafayette
NAME POS HT WT SCHOOL RANK GRADE STATUS NOTES
Devon Cheatham WR 6-3 180 Jackson Memorial High (NJ) 40 Undeclared
Geoffrey Mack WR 5-10 168 Timber Creek Regional H.S. (NJ) 40 Undeclared
Scout.com shows a QB, the punter,and a bunch of Louisiana-Lafayette kids, as usual. |

No worries. I just found it interesting Parker wasn't on the list.
As for rivals, they're only listing the two receivers you've got (with Cheatham claiming high interest in us and Georgetown), a dual-threat QB (6'3", 183 Michael Marscovetra from Oakland, N.J.), and our very own Ethan Swerdlow.
Just my two cents, but I'd like to see us make the move to scholarships. I'd be interested to see what kind of team we could put on the field with 63 schollies. |

Coach was asked about scholarships:
He and Bruce would present the positives of a move to scholarships, the faculty would be opposed. The move would involve increased spending due to Title 9, but he didn't seem to indicate the price would be too high. Holy Cross is opposed which Frank finds surprising since "they started this whole thing." Lehigh, he said, (and it's hard to remember the exact words) favors a plan involving a reduced # of scholarships. Frank cited how the league had no problem moving forward with bball schollies when we were opposed, so he wouldn't mind moving forward now with or w/out all schools on board. He said he was confident Dan wouldn't allow us to compete in a scholarship league w/out scholarships. Coach wants 63 full scholarships and they would come with a reduced roster.
He said the league presidents are "seriously discussing" expansion and scholarships. Frank has some schools he favors for expansion but didn't elaborate, as I recall.
The Ivy league is a scholarship league, no matter what they call themselves, in his opinion. Recruits for whom we were competing with the Ivy were offered $20k more by the Ivies "based on the same sheet." Frank is clearly disgusted with this situation. |
You really had your ears on, Andy. It must have been my time to "zone out," as you say because I don't recall him mentioning Holy Cross "starting this whole thing" or most of what I've placed in italics. Still, you've captured what I recall as the spirit of what he had to say on the subject. He absolutely favors the full complement of 63 scholarships and does not feel that a coach needs a squad of 100 or so to compete. He would be in favor of reducing total squad size while having the 63, but admits that some other coaches might not see it that way. His candor and demeanor gave me the impression that it's coming, but will just take some time. This is the most I've ever heard him say on the subject. The comments about doing it just like basketball where the League approves scholarships and then each school makes its own decision about when, how many, how to administer, etc. struck a responsive chord in that room after Rothkopf put us thru hell and no one in the League particularly cared, and certainly no one carried our water. |

Yes, sometimes tough to follow the stream of comments, in this case he was responding to a question which came from my table, so he was facing my way. Coach definitely joked about HC's lack of support and I'm firm on the quote. His term for what Lehigh supports may have been a "compromised plan" based on a reduced # of scholarships. I know there were other guys present who post on this board--any other recollections out there????
EDIT: BTW, he didn't use the term Title 9, he said the move to scholarships would involve more spending "on the womens' side" citing that as a hurdle, but again by demeanor suggesting not too tough an obstacle.
In the website article on the freshmen arrival they mention 30 practicing. We "signed" 28 in February, add the walk-on TE and we're one short. (Kyvory Henderson???) Anybody??? |

I think you guys covered just about everything. But there a couple of impressions that have been rolling around in my head, along with the marbles, since Tuesday.
First, it was my impression, based on Franks comments about the new QB coach Fein and the QB situation in general, that he is not happy about the development of our QBs. He refered specifically to having a QB coach who actually played the position.
Second, I thought he was almost certain that we would have scholarships and additional football playing members within the next three years. There were a lot of glances going back and forth between him and Bruce during his comments. Perhaps looking for approval to say more???
Carney, Andy - your thoughts. |

He certainly was less than exuberant about the position. One has to read into his comments or lack of. I think he has to be thrilled with Rob's emergence. Recalling a comment made during the spring game broadcast, something about Rob having to keep playing smart or he'd find himself a back-up, IMO his comments Tuesday were more of the same--he wants to keep him motivated and improving not satisfied.
From my previous post, X, I think we were similarly impressed:
"On the QBs, Coach seemed to deliberately downplay Rob's status/stature, saying he has to keep developing and that four games experience are better than none. He cited Rob's confidence and courage--mentioning the broken finger in the Lehigh game. He never says much about the soph QBs. I've kind of concluded that they're collectively a disappointment--just my opinion. Coach said Quilling is #2 despite a poor spring game, they have hope. (the recruiting services have us pursuing at least 2 QBs already)."
The staff brought in three frosh QBs at a time of need, if they were wrong on these kids (recall the newspaper articles detailing Faragalli's hot pursuit of Raymond), if one or two don't develop into contributors, then that would IMO be one of the very few times where the staff could be justly criticized. |

Frank's comments on Tuesday coupled with a few other things that have been said here have certainly muddled the QB situation in my mind. Specifics:
1. Frank seemed to be saying that 4 promising starts do not a career make and that Rob Curley still has a way to go. He also seemed to be telling us that our collective and oft stated opinion that the QB problem has definitely been solved may be more optimistic than the situation warrants at this time.
2. You have to read between the lines with the backups, but the continued silence about them coupled with Marc Quilling, a throw in as a recruit, rising to the top of the heap says a lot. Either Quilling is a hidden gem who was buried in a run oriented system in high school (it was), or the trio of Jones, Raymond and Carey has indeed turned out to be less than advertised.
By the way, Josh Jones who missed spring practice with an injury suffered in an automobile accident, is still on the roster but seems to be the forgotten man. Any reason to hope that he still might turn into something?
Obviously napping again, but I do not recall any mention of a 3 year time line for scholarships and League expansion. It does, however, seem reasonable.
I also picked up on the comment during the intro of Mickey Fein that we now have a coach who actually played the position. I did not at the time take it as a slap at what went before, but in retrospect, it probably could be interpreted that way. |

1) How do you get an invite to the Forum? I am in Friends of Football, but got nothing in the mail... could have made it that night too!
2) Wow, lots of moving parts here.... very encouraged to here about moving towards football scholarships.. and league expansion...
...but playing an FBS team? Um, I'd rather not waste the time... we can probably just get somebody to donate that amount (yeah that was kind of a superficial comment)
I find it strange that we think we can compete against an FBS team, when we were not even as physical as UMass, or even Fordham last year. |

To answer your question about not getting an invitation in the mail, there was a speaker at the end of the event who talked about trips to the brewery, baseball game, etc. He mentioned that there are no longer mailings for these events. Everything is now done by email. So you need to get your name on the email list or check the website for information on the event |
