For reasons I can't begin to explain - I found myself reading the summary of the cross country dual with Lehigh held a few weeks ago.

OH...MY...GOD....

In the men's race Lehigh posted the top sixteen times...EVERY SINGLE LEHIGH RUNNER crossed before the first Leopard.

The last Lehigh runner finished 54 seconds ahead of Lafayette's best runner. Essentially Lehigh's worst runner would be like Katy Ledecky on our team...

OK...I realize it won't save much money - but SHUT THIS THING DOWN... Even if it only saves the department $23 on gas and $2.00 on a box of capri suns...SHUT THIS DOWN...

But then our AD couldn't boast that we field 23 D1 programs.

No question that this result is truly horrific and a total embarrassment to the College and the program.  However, the College literally spends the cost of two sippy drinks on this team.  I was a member of this team over 40 years ago, and it seems that nothing has changed.  Back when I ran, we would travel to meets in Philly and NYC, as well as duels at Princeton and Bucknell.  We received $ 5.00 for meal money - enough to become charter members of the MacD and Burger King clubs.  We would be on training runs miles from campus, and by the time we got back, all the dining facilities would be closed.  We literally had to beg for food from the football training table, and often times had to pay for dinner out of our own pocket or go without.  As a result, many of us lost a great deal of weight after putting in 80-100 miles per week.  Great way to enhance your performance.

Lafayette was then a member of the East Coast Conference.  Look at the schedule now.  They don't leave the Lehigh Valley.  Lafayette is a great academic institution.  But ask yourself this:  Why would an elite runner ever come to Lafayette when there are no athletic scholarships for the sport, you never leave campus, and there are literally dozens of institutions that offer top flight academics, and provide the funds and support necessary for that runner to succeed?

X-C is what I call an "honest " sport.  It immediately exposes those that haven't put in the time, effort, and preparation.  But it also exposes a lack of support.  I guess the Lehigh duel meet result should be no surprise.  I have given to the Maroon Club on numerous occasions over the years, and I have asked that my contributions be given to support the X-C and Track teams.  I assume that those funds have been used to support those teams.  Yet, I get the uneasy feeling that the College withdraws its funding of these teams when it sees the dollars flow from the Maroon Club.  I sincerely hope that I am wrong.

Fly is right - it is nothing more that a participation sport.  It could be, and should be, so much more.  Sorry for the long winded first post.
