What are some of the things the players can do to improve?

Nice article about the vibe heading into Summer:

http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/l...rrett_makes_lafayette_player.html

From an early paragraph:

"We're conducting exit interviews after the spring, and the answer we consistently get from them is that 'We love football again," said Garrett in a Wednesday interview. "They tell us, 'We look forward to practice, it's competitive, there's urgency, we're not just standing around. We're really improving our skills'."

Enthusiasm only goes so far. Until the line and QB are competitive with those of our peers there can be little improvement. We will resemble  Thompson's Georgetown teams with poor  offense and competent defense.

I would tend to disagree. Enthusiasm, heart, fire, or whatever other euphemism you want to use was the driving force in just about all of the PL championships under Tavani. Except maybe the '06 team I don't think the Lafayette teams that won the league were ever the most talented. The difference was that Tavani had everyone on board, excited, and fighting tooth and nail for every yard, every point, and every victory.

I am not saying that Coach JG is going to go from worst to first in year one, but I would not be surprised if we are able to pull off a few wins this year off of heart alone.

You get 11 football games/year. You don't have summer leagues or club teams or whatever else.  If you aren't "up" for a game then you shouldn't be playing the sport.

I never got the impression our kids weren't motivated on game day - through the good and the bad.

What this article points to is better talent development - which can certainly get us a few more W's. Look - we've all operated under the theory that we're getting about the same level of kids as our counterparts. We're winning some, we're losing some in recruiting. But we're losing a LOT of games lately. I'm not expecting miracles - nobody is - but I have to believe we can surprise a few people next year.

In addition to "heart" the other easy improvement is fundamentals in blocking and tackling.   our fundamentals certainly the last 2 years have been less than satisfactory.   wish i could have seen the spring game, to see what the blocking and tackling looked like.   sure the line might still have been getting beat, but were they working as a unit, did they have better footwork, how were they at engaging the line, did they hold their blocks.

I heard someone say if you have a big enough why, you will figure out how. The WHY is bigger than before. Why we practice hard and fast. Why we compete in practice. Why we hit in practice. Why we work on fundamentals every practice. Why we do right all the time. [/u]

Wilson Takes his usual dig at Lafayette football saying we need upgrades at every position. That's BS. We already have the best DL in the league.  Period.

I watched the spring game replay and Garrett's O is very unpredictable, I'm confident he can make chicken salad with what we have returning on O.
The talent is there and now we have the motivation.

The exit interviews also gave the players an assessment of what they need to  work on over the summer. The process of constant improvement will be a win win for the players, the team, and the school. Parents spend a lot of time and resources having their student athletes evaluated and trained.

The exit interviews served multiple purposes.  One to get feed back on what the staff is getting right and wrong.  Garrett promotes open two way communication.  He wants to know what the staff can improve.  Two let the players know where they stand depth chart wise heading into June and July workouts.   Three what the students need to work on both in June and July and on their own.   Four my understanding was a thorough academic review

All the right moves.  Time will tell if the dividends are paid
