Today is a big day in pard land. With less than 25 days to the first game, it is time to find out who really loves football. Who loves to hit somebody.

From the 4 or 5 practices I've seen, the defense is a little ahead of the offense. That could be the result of having 6 QBs getting their turn.

The defense can help the offense get better. Practicing against a good defense will make the offense have to work harder to make plays. The reverse is also true. I believe these guys are going to push each other to a higher level of play. How does the defense look speed wise?

Has good speed overall, the challenge will be on the edge....DE , and OLB.

Powe is out there, very good, but will be a marked player.  Hopefully other players fill space quickly.  I Like our corners and safeties....

Hmmm...think so? I like our guys on the edge. Of course Powe but Robinson played well in the spring. Hutchinson. All fast aggressive players. Our 4-3 scheme gives up the short flat on one side of the field so it's always going to look as if no one is there. Because there is no one there.

Offense mostly unimpressive today, run and pass. Not much running room, about a dozen completions all day, skeleton and scrimmage. Two obvious reasons: coaches searching for back-up and 3rd string QBs. Davis took very few snaps; most went to O'Malley and McCrum. I dont think I saw one QB scramble which Davis excels at. Secondly, OL was without Grieser (limping, shorts T-shirt), the freshman from Maine (wearing blue, whom I'm told has looked good at G), and Kern (nowhere around). We miss Kevin, too, of course. Mike Dunn in a boot, told sprained ankle. So, today's OL L to R -
Cam, Barclay, Donnely, Bradley, Marotti.

Some positives - a couple of completions (at least one back of endzone TD) to our star TE; catching ability of fr Selwyn Simpson (easily snagging a bullet pass); speed of JJ Younger (wearing blue) on the kick returns, Joey, too. A first down swing pass to Rajhan. I thought O'Malley showed nice potential, strong arm. McCrum looked pretty good rolling out, other times accuracy was wanting.

This DL is overwhelming OL pretty much. Only time I saw adequate time to throw was during 4 min drill vs 3 man DL. Great to see guys like BB, Earle, Tre back on the field. Dante running real well. YT back at starting safety (at least today) with Phil and Mitchell at corner, and Jones.

Wish I could report more positively on the O, but according to others, this was first bad day. Davis has looked good and he didnt get many chances today. Punter Turk hits them 50 yards.

Coach Dell around today, hugs all around, talking to JG after practice.

I hope Ollis Robinson gets a solid chance this year.  He looked extremely good this spring.

Mr. Wilson is incorrect, Davis has taken snaps and completed a pass. That was at Yankee Stadium; pass to Scheuerman who tossed a lateral to Brian Keller.
He's also taken snaps in a game or two more, but yes he's not experienced.

At some point, the QB spot over the next year or two will have to be shaken out. There are quite a few good prospects on the roster.

I remember a play he made in the spring game where he blew the play up. I heard the lick at the top of the stands.

BW always gives an anti-LC spin on his Lafayette football coverage.  I supposed this year it's warranted until proven otherwise.  At least he has good things to say about the freshman class.

Thanks for the update on the live practice you attended.  Was hoping for some better news on the offense's progress.  Maybe our D is just that good!  Wink

Monmouth will be tough to beat.  They return their entire Oline and seemed to move the ball at will against LU last year.  Our D should give them problems but our O needs to have a helluva coming out party if we're to win.  LU only put up 239 yards of total O on them.

Monmouth has athletes and graduate transfer Rob Cantelli from Fordham. Cantelli scored on a reception near the end of the first half in the 58-34 Fordham win last fall.
The only question of course is, why did they even bother to throw? That was the 516-yard Ram rushing-record game, 359 of them by Edmonds.
Coach Garrett has a huge job ahead of him. Most of the rest of the league has improved and the PL has some formidable offenses and QBs.
It's all about improvement and spirit. I wouldn't say there was any quitting last year but there was a lot frustration.

And Fordham scored 40 in their loss. Lehigh plays them the week after us, I believe, will be a gauge.
